Have you seen them before, Paul?

Kill Baby Kill! and The Black Torment are masterpieces of Gothic horror.

I enjoyed Bavas Blood and black lace as well. not as good as Dario argento who i feel makes better films, but still very entertaining.

This is how i would look at it. I highly rate both directors.

Bava made very good films his whole career. There's not one i don't like that i've seen. Whereas Argento ran out of steam following Opera (1987) and has made quite a few poor ones since.

However it can also be argued that Argento has been directing for a lot longer than Bava so it's entirely possible that his creativity has worn thin. There's also the small fact that there isn't much of an Italian film industry anymore especially for genre cinema so it's difficult to get finance for major productions. Bava on the other hand was arguably at the centre of Italian genre cinema throughout it's peak years and didn't have to face the struggles facing Dario in the 2000's.

i agree with you about Argento running out of steam since Opera, and apart from one or two good ideas in Sleepless and The stendahl syndrome his films were rubbish later on.
but i still think that in his hey day he surpass Bava with better camera work and music. bava may have started the giallos but argento perfected it.
and it was argento i knew long before bava so i guess it't a personal preference. i also still need to see more of bavas films as i only discovered his work a short while ago. having said that, one film i didn't enjoy was Girl who knew to much.
