A blu-ray of Ralph Bakshi's 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon has just been delivered. He wanted to call it Lord of the Rings part 1 which would have prevented disappointment amongst many viewers. I think that I may even prefer it to the expensive Peter Jackson adaption, amazing as that was. I haven't seen it for around 10 years but I recall it being more faithful to the source material. For example, here it's Gandalf who works out how to gain entry to the mines of Moria. Mind you, it is a bit annoying that Saruman is sometimes renamed Aruman (supposedly there were concerns that it sounded similar to Sauron). btw After reading that this animated film was quite profitable, I really can't understand why the planned second half didn't get made?
