I only picked it up because I recently bought the Criterion Wong Kar Wai box set.

I imported the Hong Kong BluRay, which has the original cut.

Wong said that all he removed was historical scenes that would be lost on foreign audiences. Now, I'm sure most of us are aware that China had a civil war. I'm also sure that we know that Japan invaded China. So I can't figure out what would be removed. I had no issues following it at all.

Plus, I think the historical moments are important, as they establish the character's ideals in the latter half of the film.
