Best British Films Of Each Decade?

Happy St. George's Day everyone!

To celebrate, let's take a look at the very best of British with this new thread.

What are some of the greatest British films from each decade? It's a very tough question, especially in the 60's and 70's but lets see what you think!

Just post the decades and your three chosen films from each of those decades...

Great list, Frankenhooker.

We seem to have a fair amount of crossover.

This should be interesting. I've just compiled my top 3 from the thirties and i really seem to be lacking in viewing British cinema from that era. I can honestly say i have yet to see any of the films Hitchcock made in the thirties.

I'd definitely recommend the two I listed above, Dem - The Lady Vanishes in particular, which is actually my favourite Hitchcock film after Psycho.

This is proving extremely difficult. I'm only up to the 1960s and have these films listed (sort of in chronological order):

Peeping Tom
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
Village of the Damned
The Curse of the Werewolf
The Innocents
Lawrence of Arabia
Lolita
Billy Liar
The Haunting
Paranoiac
This Sporting Life
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Zulu
Doctor Zhivago
The Nanny
Repulsion
Alfie
Blowup
Cul-De-Sac
Rasputin, The Mad Monk
The Reptile
Quatermass and the Pit
2001: A Space Odyssey
if….
Witchfinder General
The Italian Job
Kes

How could I possibly narrow that list down to 3?

Stick them all in a hat and draw three out! ;)

I attempted to go back even further to the 1920s, but quickly realised that I had only seen one British film from the decade: Hitchcock's The Lodger (which incidentally is really good).

I couldn't do that – this will require some thought. The 1970s and '80s are also very difficult to narrow down.

I'm not sure why I didn't include All Quiet on the Western Front on my list because it's a masterpiece which I voted 10/10 at the IMDb. I must go back and edit my list accordingly.
