As a real fan of all that 'outer space rubbish' and science fiction (there is a difference) Star Wars knocked my socks off when I saw it on a very big screen back in 1977(?) I was 16. Suddenly all that science fiction imagery that was in my head from years of reading SF was up there on the big screen. Wow! Those wipes used as transitions between scenes were amazing (you have to remember that this was pre-VHS Pre-Youtube and, though we knew he's lifted the technique from Republic serials and the like, very few of us kids had actually seen any Republic serials. It was all new.)
Trouble was Star Wars was so good and so popular that it was instantly ripped off, riffed on, plagiarised and remade - by Lucas as well - that it's hard to see what a great film it was. At the time. Now it really shows its age. It hasn't aged well. Great piece of marketing though.

All opinions expressed in this post are not necessarily those of the poster.

I would thought that was one of the (many) things he 'borrowed' from Kurosawa, along with R2-D2 and C-3PO being based on the bickering peasants from The Hidden Fortress.
