My dad wasn't much for films anyway, and certainly not war. Maybe a bit of foriegn soft porn nonsense. So war is a genre i really didn't grow up with at all and not one that held much appeal til relatively recently.

Actually much easier than I thought! I didn't have the scrape the bottom of the barrel where my war film watching was concerned - all of the above are in fact fantastic films and all favourites of mine.

Sure, a few are probably not 'War' in the conventional sense, but thank you IMDb genre filter.
I've seen two of those It's going to be a difficult week for me this week but I'm going to do it!

I think the films have to principally be set during a recognised conflict, whether the American or British civil war, Napoleonic conflicts, Korean of Vietnam wars, World War I or World War II, the Cold War, the 'War on Terror' (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, American Sniper etc.), or even 'the troubles', so films like '71 and Hunger (2008) might count.
Good point Nos, 71 is excellent too. But when you say recognised conflict, would you not say films set during fictional wars could count?

So how about

Ice Cold in Alex
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Pearl Harbour
71
Inglorious Basterds
Schindlers List
The Patriot
Two Flags West
Zulu

About as conventional as i can be at the moment. Maybe by the end of the week it'll be different.

I thought I would find this difficult but just looking through my bluray collection I found 10 war films which are all great!

  • Apocalypse Now
  • Casablanca
  • Downfall
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • Grave of the Fireflies
  • The Hunt for Red October
  • The Pianist
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Schindler's List
  • The Wind Rises

I seriously considered Casablanca. Couldn't decide if it really counted.

It's stretching it but the whole story hinges on the fact that world is at war so it counts

The only one I can think of that even vaguely fits is The Eagle Has Landed.

Like Star wars, War of the worlds?

Only joking.

In my mind they should be set in some real world conflict.

So does Raiders of the lost ark count then?

I've got 10 sorted already anyway but i want to make sure i've not missed something.

Glad to see some people have put down "Come and see" already, that's definitely on my list.
