If you like arty-farty then you'll love it.

In all seriousness though, I think it's an absolutely fantastic film and one that's sat in my top 10 of all time for many years now.

Get it watched! You've had enough Decemberdikes to give it a spin now. Stick it above all the direct to DVD crap, rom-coms and Downton Abbey that is infesting your to-watch-pile - prioritise a quintessential British classic!

I fear that I may have over-sold it now...

Treasures of The Sierra Madre
One of the greatest films of all time and one of the best performances on film from Humphrey Bogart as Dobbs which covers both Madness and Paranoia first we see his paranoia that his partners are going to steal his gold which in turn drives into total madness and prepared to kill to protect his claim absolutely mind blowing performance i repeat MIND BLOWING

Night Of The Hunter
Another entry from my top ten all time favourite films Robert Mitchum as Harry Powell is outstanding very strong and intimidating presence on screen but as the film goes on and he finds himself not getting any closer to the money he seeks he is driven into homicidal madness.

The Thing
The ultimate film of paranoia trapped and unable to trust anyone the claustrophobia of their situation only making the paranoia worse.

Cape Fear
Robert Mitchum pops up again with another amazing performance as Max Cady a man so consumed by a need for revenge it drives him crazy this covers the madness and on the other side Gregory Peck whose fear and paranoia turns him from helpless victim to being as much of a crazed monster as Cady in order to protect his family.

Blue Velvet
Frank Booth i don't have to say anything else.

Blow Out
In the world of conspiracy there is no one you can trust.

Jacobs Ladder
Not being able to decipher what it real and what is fake if you are awake or asleep if everything you have ever done in your life you actually ever did it at all if all your interactions with people are actual memories or just illusions of the mind would drive anyone crazy.

The Haunting
A truly unsettling look at the horrors of the mind outstanding.

White Heat
One more entry from my all time top ten films James Cagney plays the psychotic criminal Cody Jarrett who is always on the edge of breaking point the only bit of sanity in his life is the influence of his ever present mother but she is not exactly discouraging his crazed antics.

Taxi Driver
Robert DeNiro plays a man driven crazy by war, sleaze, filth, insomnia and an entire city becoming one big sewer of depravity. Travis Bickle starts out as a likeable quirky character but he is on a rapid descent into the darker side of the human mind but this performance is not just about madness it also shows there is a way back from dark places.

There have been some excellent lists and suggestions so far with many films certainly deserving a top 10 status in all our lists.

What i've done with my top 10 is to come up with a list of ten films which haven't been mentioned yet and which i hope are perhaps deserving of a place in a top 10 or top 20 at least.

Madness and Paranoia Top 10.

Harvey (1950)
May (2002)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Demons of the Mind (1971)
House of Usher (1960)
Tower of London (1962)
The Truman Show (1998)
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
Fear in the Night (1972)
Bunny Lake is Missing (1965)
