Instead it was a 2hr 30 minutes mystery with genuniely weird imagery and some messed up violence topped off with a gothic twist.
It's one that I really want to check out at some point.

The use of this piece of music from Norwegian band Ulver is brilliant, reminds me of the rejected Coil score for Hellraiser, creepy as hell!

Wait, so first I found out it quite prominently uses a Boards of Canada piece years after seeing it, but now also Ulver? How many other artists are in the soundtrack I never knew of!

Well just went and had a look. Sunn O))) and Boris too!!! Feel like I have to have a look into Aghast, Accurst and Judgehydrogen as they're the other three prominent artists on the soundtrack

The soundtrack is the by far the best thing about the otherwise mediocre Sinister in my opinion.

I have quite a soft spot for it due to it being a clever idea executed well, but man the ending is so bad and the comic relief hopeless cop will always be a frustrating horror trope.

  1. Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
  2. Don't Breathe (2016)
  3. Red State (2011)
  4. The Witch (2015)
  5. It Follows (2014)
  6. Scream 4 (2011)
  7. The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
  8. Maniac (2012)
  9. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
  10. Kill List (2011)

*Almost*
Final Destination 5 (2011)
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Sinister (2012)
The Lords of Salem (2012)
The Purge (2013)

Going through the imdb there are so many films that look good but I just haven't seen, I suppose a lot of us are guilty in thinking that the 70's and 80's are the 'Golden Age' of horror but there are nearly 800 films listed as horror films on imdb for the last 7 years alone.

Note:: I would have had Crimson Peak in my top 10 but it's not really a horror film.

Ulver and Boards of Canada are two of my favourite bands and have changed the way I listen to and enjoy music - both way ahead of their time. Ironically for BoC who make their music on vintage analogue equipment, but literally nobody else sound like them.

Seeing as I have an exam in 2 days and are desperately procrastinating, not to mention finally getting email notifications from Cult Labs again, I thought I'd do this one.

Interesting to note that of all the wonderful original concepts, everything got beat out by my only 4 10 star horror films of the decade being 2 remakes and a sequel.

1. Evil Dead

Evil Dead already feels timeless and less of a remake, and instead more an Ash-less, less goofy sequel. I hated the idea of a remake so much during pre-production and production and ended up enjoying it more than Evil Dead 2.

2. Maniac

This is better than the original. I'm sorry Joe, but this was a clever, stylish and down right creepy film, where as the original just came across as too sleazy and at points, weird with the 4th wall breaking.

3. The Conjuring 2

High quality, freaky, blockbuster horror. I missed this being a thing. So many fantastic scares, threats and ideas.

4. It Follows
5. As Above So Below
6. The Conjuring
7. Blair Witch
8. Sinister
9. Don't Breathe
10. VHS 2

Honorable Mentions:
The Bay (Fantastic concept that just dragged too much at points)
Frankenstein's Army (So cheesy and broken concept (found footage from WWII? One camera knock/drop and it would be over), but clever fun with great design)
