Classic era Noir:

1940s:

1. Double Indemnity (1944)
2. The Maltese Falcon (1941)
3. The Third Man (1949)
4. Scarlet Street (1945)
5. Leave Her to Heaven (1945)
6. The Lost Weekend (1945)
7. Out of the Past (1947)
8. Thieves' Highway (1949)
9. Dark Passage (1947)
10. The Big Sleep (1946)

1950s:

1. Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
2. Night of the Hunter (1955)
3. Strangers on a Train (1951)
4. Night and the City (1950)
5. The Killing (1956)
6. Rififi (1955)
7. Sunset Boulevard (1950)
8. Dial M for Murder (1954)
9. Touch of Evil (1958)
10. Pickup on South Street (1953)

The 1940s in particular were difficult... so many great Noir films to choose from.

Can i just use b_e's lists and stick Laura in place of Scarlet Street?

Having done a modern Noir ten i aim to do a British Noir top ten before my main list.

I was going to do two lists, with 1960 as the dividing line between 'classic' and 'neo', but by decade is going to be much easier!

Top Ten Film noir 'Ahem'

Third Man
Grifters
Big Lebowski
Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid
Blade Runner
Angel Heart
Memento
Blue Velvet
Lady From Shanghai (love the hall of mirrors final)
The Sniper (1952)
Seven
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Brighton Rock

I'm not a big film noir fan, and haven't seen many of the old classics, so my list is just a hodge podge of vaguely noir influenced stuff. Can't be arsed to sort it anymore so this will just have to do.
