Thanks to everyone who contributed a list of their favourite films from 1999. It was a great year for film and led to many varied and interesting selections.

This week's topic is a simple one:

Obviously, this means Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Bram Stoker's Dracula is not a remake of Tod Browning's Dracula as they are different adaptations of the same book. A remake is where the film is made using a previous film as that source material to create a new version of that film.

That’ll mean no John Carpenters The Thing too right

Here’s my first list for months then, and in no particular order as always:

1. Dawn of the Dead
2. The Hills Have Eyes
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
4. Cape Fear
5. Piranha 3D
6. King Kong (2005)
7. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber
8. The Fly
9. Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht
10. The Departed

Almost included:

Let Me In
Carrie
The Amityville Horror
Friday the 13th
A Nightmare on Elm Street (yeah it has its faults, but I quite like it)
Poltergeist
Maniac

One I nearly added but remembered it’s technically a sequel and not a remake:

Evil Dead

Correct! It's a film version of 'Who Goes There?', not a remake of The Thing from Another World (1951)

Great list of remakes as well. I'm never sure whether Evil Dead II is a remake or sequel, or both, because the cabin is intact having been mostly destroyed in the 1981 film, and the Necronomicon exists, having been completely burned in The Evil Dead. Also, Linda is in the film and she was decapitated in The Evil Dead!

Yeah, Evil Dead II is a tricky one because the first part is more a less a bigger budget remake of The Evil Dead, but I’ve always classed it as a sequel with the opening being more of a recap (albeit somewhat different) of the events of the first film

Love that film, but strangely enough I don’t own it on any format for some reason, must get that sorted!
