My thanks to those who contributed a list of their top 10 Tom Savini films.

This week's topic is similar to one from a few weeks ago but devoted to psychological thrillers made in Europe. There may be a blurring between this category and the giallo, but it would be more interesting if there were as few gialli as possible. Additionally, if a film is a a co-production involving an American studio but is predominantly European, it counts.

For reference purposes, I'll be using this definition by Peter Hutchings:
Quote:
"The label "psychological thriller" has been applied, often loosely or vaguely, to different types of film. It usually refers to narratives with domesticated settings in which action is suppressed and where the thrills are provided instead via investigations of the psychologies of principal characters. There's nothing intrinsically horror-like about the psychological thriller. However, post-1950s horror cinema has increasingly deployed psychological concepts and scenarios, consequently there is a category of psychological thriller that sits, sometimes uncomfortably between the genres of crime and horror."

Are you aware that South Korea isn't actually in Europe?

As Demdike pointed out, A Tale of Two Sisters is a Korean film, so not European!

I initially put The Orphanage on my list and then took it out because I consider it more horror film than a psychological thriller. However, there are elements which make it a psychological horror so I don't object to anyone including it on their list. Similarly, Them is a film I consider to be a horror rather than a thriller.

At the moment, my long list is this:
  • Mulholland Dr.*
  • The Vanishing
  • Hidden
  • Inland Empire*
  • The Machinist*
  • Tell No One
  • The Lives of Others
  • Julia's Eyes
  • The Skin I Live in
  • Les diaboliques
  • The Innocents
  • M
  • Moon
  • The Tenant
  • The Nanny
  • Dead Man's Shoes
  • The Hunt
  • A Lonely Place to Die
  • Insomnia (1997)
*These are films with production companies from various European countries and the US, so I'm including them

Thanks to all those (both of you ) who contributed a list of your favourite European psychological thrillers.

The topic for this week is quite a simple one: films in which the story revolves around a demon or demons. For the purposes of this week, that includes the Devil.

Quote:
A demon is a supernatural and often malevolent being prevalent historically in religion, occultism, literature, fiction, mythology, and folklore; as well as in media such as comics, videogames, movies and television series.
