In a break from the trend in recent weeks to be more geared towards horror films, this week is going to use the definition of cool meaning "fashionably attractive or impressive" and for you to think about film characters, not films.

Hopefully, everyone will have a slightly different idea of what they consider to be 'cool', so these will be very individual lists.

Coolest Film Characters

I'm probably the only person on the forum who finds the fact that 50% of your pictures contain people with visible guns disturbing!

Isn't that part of how characters are made to be 'cool'? Very often, they are criminals (particularly gangsters) and antiheroes.

I made a blunder the last time I posted in this thread, let's see if I can get it right this time. This was a difficult one to compile, and I'm embarrassed that they are no black actors on this list, but this is what I came up with...

Dr. Kyojō Niide (Toshiro Mifune, Red Beard)
Trapper John McIntyre (Elliot Gould, MASH)
Yang Hui-zhen (Hsu Feng, A Touch of Zen), pictured below
Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig, Daughters of Darkness)
Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid)
Kowalski (Barry Newman, Vanishing Point)
Jackie Scanlon (Roy Scheider, Sorcerer)
Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen, Apocalypse Now)
John Ryder (Rutger Hauer, The Hitcher)
Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro, Heat)

Good call on all of these, especially Kowalski – they should have made my 'others'' list after the top 10.

I was the same with Walker (Point Blank) and 'Silence' (The Great Silence) and only worked out who they were by reading the caption on the pictures.

Susan's point is well made. I caught a chunk of Olympus Has Fallen on TV recently and the gun play in the film was totally gratuitous to the point where I was cringing. Okay, hardly a film of quality like Hardboiled, but I couldn't help thinking this was the last thing a trigger happy society needed. For years I thought James Cameron's pacifist Terminator in Judgement Day was ridiculous but 26 years later, I can better appreciate his decision...
