Assault on Precinct 13. 2005.

Somewhat stylish remake of the John Carpenter's 1976 cult classic, this time Ethan Hawke plays the Desk Sergeant teaming with old timer Brian Dennehey and Drea de Matteo, with gangster Laurence Fishburne. Although it has the same premise, a police station coming under siege, this version it's cops vs cops with Gabriel Byrne leading the charge on the station with his fellow officers.

This does catch the eye on paranoia on who to trust when fellow officer Matt Craven turns up and who exactly is helping the officers on the outside. It does play a bit of a homage to the original with the limited arsenal supply and have to think on their feet but does end up becoming something of a war zone stand off. Entertaining enough.

The Children. 2008.

What can be more exciting spending the holidays with the family and then the young kids take a step up from the terrible two's to a killing spree and make it a fight for survival for the adults against the little angels.

A isolated farm house in the country makes a great setting for this little chiller, you don't need a big budget or a all big star cast, there is a few familiar British stars in this and make it nerve wracking, tension and cringe worthy to make it enjoyable. The killings from both sides are decent and made to look like accidents until the older teen decide to try and go full female Rambo. Another decent horror for this season.

New Year's Evil. 1980.

We have a female disc-jockey who gets calls about murders will happen on New Years Eve, who seems to think more of herself than a son and a clever disguised villain.

The concept of killing a person on the hour every hour is quite effective, even though we see the killer's face it does make you wonder why then we get the twist. This is one of those films where the killer seems to have more screen time than anyone else. The acting is decent in this with some character build up, for a slasher film there is about 5-6 people killed but does have one good prolonged kill that seems effective, For a Canon film this wasn't that bad.

Think that will do it for this year, thanks for all your likes this year, you guys are the best.

Stigma (1977)

Stigma is certainly the most disturbing of all the Ghost Stories For Christmas. Set in the present day, well present day 1977, it's the final film of the series from director Lawrence Gordon Clark.

Where this differs from the MR James adaptations is that the subtleties of Gothic horror are long gone, Stigma melds Folk horror with what can only be described as full on body horror. The story which involves stone circles and ritual execution disturbs me more than most horror films. Kate Binchy's performance in a difficult lead role as a regular woman and mother who becomes afflicted with the stigma of bleeding uncontrollably is superb and very unsettling because it's done all so matter of factly. There's no big build up, no hysterics, she simply attempts to deal with her body bleeding for no apparent reason as best she can unbeknown to her daughter and hubby Peter Bowles.

Stigma ends up being very chilling, very grim and very good.

I always like to watch this and The Ice House (1978) watched in late November as they aren't really Christmassy ghost stories at all, especially in comparison to the James and Dickens ones.

It probably encourages people when they see the local towns and villages where they live do their 'official' light ups around the same time.

Yeah probably does encourage those who need their local decorations up to do the same.
