Apparently the upcoming Blu-Ray and DVD combo pack of 'Suicide Squad' contains an extended version of the film with an extra 13 minutes of new material

However, this extended cut will ONLY be on the Blu-Ray - the DVD will just contain the theatrical one

It's crazy that studios are short-changing dvd only customers. The extended version should be released on both formats.

And here's the artwork for HMV's steelbook.

Seems like something that's been around a while though. I remember the 4th Final Destination film had a much gorier home video edit that was only available on blu ray, and I remember there being others. Maybe that was just Australia though

Demdike@Cult Labs 7th October 2016 01:49 PM

It's all about timing and profits.

Companies know they'll sell shed loads of the dvd in the run up to Christmas and then release it in an extended cut in a few months time that the fans will buy anyway.

Unless of course they make the assumption that all the fans will now be blu ray compatible.

As an aside it puzzles me why they release extended cuts to home video. Yes i can understand with horror perhaps with additional violence but a superhero film? Is it because both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman were so critically reviled they try to make it a better film?

I imagine it's more that studios get cold feet when it comes to Theatrical releases and try to make a film shorter or simpler, plus the shorter a film, the more screenings and the more money.

In the case of BvS, the added footage dramatically improves the film and it makes much more sense, where as in this case I've heard the theatrical is the final cut and this version just adds back in all the Joker related footage that was cut

Because the theatrical versions of BvS and Suicide Squad were butchered by the studio, so they released the director's cut of BvS on Blu-ray (it remains to be seen what Suicide Squad will be).

Nope, the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad was NOT Ayer's version, don't listen to him, he just didn't want to sour his relationship with them. Ideally we'll be getting his version on Blu-ray, but I'm sort of expecting it to just be the botched theatrical cut instead with some extra bits, we shall see.

I didn't see the theatrical cut of BvS, but I can safely say that the extended version was an utter trainwreck.

A very expensive lesson on how not to tell a story.

Sorry if this was posted before (did a quick search), but this is currently slated for November 14. There's little info to go on and 4 Digital Media are releasing it (they tend to stick to DVD only releases)... so this could go either way.

Hopefully their HD transfer of Best of the Best 2 is taken from the uncut master Fox used for their really quite good US DVD release.

  • Chasing the Real
  • Armed to the Teeth
  • The Squad Declassified
  • This is Gonna Get Loud: The Epic Battles of Suicide Squad

HMV have added a few new titles to their Premium Line. Excalibur and The Mission are 13th March. Robin Hood and King Kong 27th Feb.

I love Excalibur, it's an amazing film. But I already own the region friendly US blu-ray. Nice that the UK is also getting it (even if it is a HMV exclusive). I would ideally like a blu-ray in a 1.66:1 ratio as the US blu-ray's 1.78:1 cuts off some information from the top and bottom of the film.

Although I already own two of those (King Kong and The Adventures of Robin Hood) on Blu-ray, I'll probably buy them all. I have the first 10 releases and it would be annoying to have gaps in the numbered spines.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 11th January 2017 06:07 PM

I'm in!

About time Excalibur was released with decent art!

Rik 11th January 2017 06:51 PM

Does Excalibur have a scene with some skeleton Knights in it, because if it does I remember being scared by it as a kid?

That made me stand up and check my US blu-ray cover. Which has nothing to do with the original film. :)

Is this just a stripped down release of the 'Final Cut' from October 2013? I can't see anything which indicates otherwise.

No idea. It's not like it's going to bring anything new to the party.

HMV give the running time as 84 minutes, which is 10 minutes shorter than the Final Cut. That's either a mistake or it's a new cut of the film.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 5th February 2017 06:24 PM

It could be the same disc as the 2013 release only repackaged as part of the StudioCanal Vintage Classics range – it's a wonderful selection of films:

I have a few of them but would love them all as a collection on a shelf. Unfortunately, because that would involve double dipping for a few titles and I don't have any spare shelves, it's something that will never happen.

Maybe they're releasing a stand alone release of the 'theatrical cut'? and the 4 minute difference is to do with Blu Ray?
