Don't get me wrong, it's a decent film, but nowhere near as good as all the praise would lead you to believe. It isn't even Kurosawa's best film (in my opinion of course).

I think his best film is Ikiru, but The Seven Samurai is a masterpiece.

+1 - I think that it's a terrific thriller. Personally, I've always found Kurosawa to be better at contemporary stuff than period pieces, but I would give a special mention to Red Beard - I was not expecting it to be all that great, but I loved it.
