Just out of interest, are there any other reasons why you like 'Splash'?

I liked him better as a comedy actor in the 80s but to be fair, his moving to drama is almost certainly the reason he's still a big, name actor, when every other comedy star of that period seems to have vanished without trace nowadays.

That could be one of them, yes! I love the (almost literal) 'fish out of water' nature of Madison's character and learning to figure out how to cope in New York City, the relationship between Madison and Allen, Eugene Levy's obsessed doctor and, because I was always a keen swimmer, it was one of the first films I repeatedly watched and loved as a child.

Tom Hanks is certainly a very adaptable and capable actor with variety, hence why he is good in comedy roles and dramas alike, being utterly convincing in films ranging from That Thing You Do!, Philadelphia to Charlie Wilson's War and Road to Perdition and, as a voice actor in the Toy Story films and The Simpsons Movie.

The Tory Story films? Are they political dramas?

I disagree this is one of the reasons i dislike Tom Hanks i don't think he's that adaptable.
Same way i feel about Tom Cruise.
Most of his roles consist of nice guy, everyman characters or nice guys stuck in a bad situation. Even Road to P, where he's involved with crime he's still a nice guy.

If he had any real range he'd go the full hog and be the bad guy. The characters are all too alike.
i thought the early comedies were better too.
At least they had Daryl Hannah and Joe Dante.

I do like Tom Hardy, so it's not just a Tom thing.

Tom Hanks is better in his more serious roles or his more cynical acidic comedy stuff. Like The Burbs, Dragnet or Volunteers was always good. While i liked Big and Splash when i was younger, they haven't aged well.

I think Splash has aged fantastically well. Saw it just last year for the first time in decades and loved it. Better than any Hollywood comedy of the last ten years!

So, unlike Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen..... then. I presume you don't rate any of them either using that argument. All actors who play similar character traits in the majority of their movies.
