Multiple the numbers in your post by at least three of four and you are probably right. AFAIK, 84 Ent. have already done 9 cifferent editions of their DVD release of Suspiria.

What bothers me a little bit: TLE Films is known to deliver great quality. BUT the work will be done on the already exisiting Italian 2k HD master.
The reason that was given in public: The OCN is locked away and not accesible.

As far as I understand though, Synapse will do a new scan of the OCN Did I get something wrong?

(Torsten Kaiser himself will give "no coment" on this subject)

Torsten Kaiser has just made a HUGE post on the cinefacts board regarding this topic.

If you want to, maybe later I could sum up the most important information in English.

context information:
- access to the film materials is controled by the Italian license holder, this was given the last time in 2007
- actually, it wasn't the OCN that was scanned back then but the Interpositive (by Technicolor Rome)
- to this day, NO 35 mm elementes have been accesible to Europen OR US bidders (with the exception of Wildside for Cannes)
- Technicolor has no influence on that
- (he compares the case to A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More were it was very difficult to gain access to HD material)
- AS FAR AS HE KNOWS: nothing regarding the Synapse release is fixed to this point, he onlys knows that 84' as well as many more companies were DENIED access to the 35 mm materials
- (he nonetheless wishes Synapse all the best with their release)

the restoration:
- the existing HD master is NOT the problem
- most of the damage was done in post processing (on various levels)
- their task is now to restore the colors etc. in the way that represent the original material and intended look of the movie
