The Return Of Bulldog Drummond (1934, Walter Summers)

The indomitable Ralph Richardson (and his boyfriend Algy ) fight off beastly rotters a gogo in this rather bonkers film. For a start I've never seen a more obvious beard than this "wife" of his , and his overreaction at her plight is a absolute scream (rewound it thrice ;))
The sixth in a series, I can only imagine what the rest are like.
Algy. A human ventriloquist's doll cough. His joie de vivre throughout is quite infectious. Decent PQ at least on this bare bones release ;)

Dracula the 1958 Hammer classic. Classic is often over-used, but not in this case. From ingeneous multiple uses of the same sets with different dressings, to faultless cinematography and superb acting from soon to be stalwarts, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Several set pieces are still unnerving 60 years after being filmed - the standout being the confrontation in the graveyard with 'Aunt Lucy'.

Richard Gough is a bit over grouchy much of the time, but at least comes around in time to help the assured Dr Van Helsing. However, unsung hero (or heroine) of the film has to be Melissa Stribling as Mina 'Holmwood'. Matriach of the family home back in blighty and next victim after Lucy for the randy Count, she smoulders in a matronly, yet unmistakenly sexual manner when Drac sinks his fangs into her.

One of my favourite films. I re-watch it at regular intervals and always come away wondering how they managed such a great film with their limitations and one that stands the test of time so well.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr Hunter S Thompson.
Documentary about the rise of the journalist Hunter S Thompson from his book on Hell's Angels to his views on Jimmy at the same time talking about his private life to some degree.
An interesting watch to say the least, out of the 2 Thompson documentaries I have seen this one is so much better than buy the ticket take the ride.

Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?

1 Attachment(s)
Shelley Winters second outing in a Curtis Harrington psycho biddy horror film, see's Winters as Auntie Roo who invites children from the local orphanage to a her annual Christmas party...Sounds like a case for social services if ever I heard one, but no one seems bothered, ah they were the days. With only ten of the children being invited to the party, Oliver Twist himself Mark Lester as Christopher Coombs and Chloe Franks as Katy Coombs his sister manages to hide in Lionel Jeffries as Police Inspector Willoughby car, who volunteers to take the children to the party each year... Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? has the slight feel of a television movie, but its none the worse for that as it has a great atmosphere and a fine gothic feel, mostly due to that air of decay and sombre colours that you get from low budget British trash cinema from the early 1970's.What helps of course is that there was a massive talent pool of actors in Britain during the 1970s,and because British cinema was in decline, you could always get the bigger stars to slum it,so you have Ralph Richardson as Mr. Benton, fake psychic ,Lionel Jeffries as Police Inspector Willoughby and Hugh Griffith, and not forgetting Michael Gothard.. Obviously the film is just riffing on the Hansel and Gretel story, but Winters knows how to do crazy and the two child leads are unusually likeable, compared to most child actors. Harrington manages to make good use out of Winters persona, not sure if Dame Judi Dench, would take on similarly low brow roles...If your a fan of Hammers psychological thrillers like the Nanny and the other hag horror films you should enjoy this trashy treat..

Dr. Paul Kersey a vastly experienced trauma surgeon is used to dealing with the results of gang and other random acts of violence living in Chicago where gun crime is ever growing problem but when it directly affects him and his family how will he cope. In a city where there is a violent crime every few minutes the police are spread thin and there is no way they can solve every crime sick of waiting and seeing no results Dr. Kersey decides to track down the men that wronged him and his family himself.

It can be hard but when watching a film like this you have to try and separate yourself from this modern effort and the original films just like i did when i watch The Equalizer and it worked then but can it work this time around.

Death Wish is pretty entertaining and nowhere near as bad as i expected. Some of the scenarios are pretty stupid but when it comes to the action and kills there is no messing around he is just straight in and kicking ass or blowing heads off and mutilating people in a various ways. Bruce Willis is pretty hit and miss throughout sometimes i noticed he would be almost laughing through a serious scene and a few times when something major would happen it just felt brushed under the carpet and the film just moved on too fast from it often taking you out of the tension or emotional impact of the scene. Not a bad way to pass 2 hours.

Arachnophobia
A photographer heads to Venezuela with an expert on spiders and discovers a new species. Unfortunately he is bitten by said spider and it hitches a lift to America, where it breeds with a house spider and starts to spread. Unfortunately the new town doctor has Arachnophobia and must stop them from spreading.
I still enjoy this flick, it's creepy and it is darkly comic. The big spider at times kinda looks silly but meh minor complaint. John Goodman is one of my favourite characters. If you hate spiders I wouldn't recommend it.

While the spirit is still inside her the cops involved in the Ninjas death start to drop off one by one. Can it be stopped before it takes her over completely.

Ninja III is Canon at its finest the action scenes are fantastic with plenty of hilarious overacting when someone is stabbed or shot or even just standing there with nothing at all happening to them. This is the perfect film for a few beers just non stop entertainment from start to finish no filler even the random dancing for no reason during a very dangerous situation scene

St. Agatha (2018)

Numerous creepy dream sequences do not automatically make a good horror film, but a decent script does.

Sadly St. Agatha has too much of the former and none of the latter and is yet another mess from Darren Lynn Bousman.

Over hyped website Bloody Disgusting have quotes all over the dvd sleeve saying how much they love this film. They really have no idea.

Beyond White Space (2018)

An indie sci-fi film that looks terrific and boasts excellent SFX in it's numerous space sequences.

But it's totally let down by poor dialogue and less than average performances meaning although visually impressive it was all a bit boring.

I aim to give this one another watch as it was almost four in the morning when it finished.

A group of high school students notice that their teachers are acting wierd, the coach isn't aggressive the alcoholic is on water and the nurse hasn't got a cold. So what could it be.... Alien Parasites.
One I ain't seen in years and despite some dated special effects is still a disturbing sci fi horror movie. Decent cast as well.

The Lost City of Z (2016)

The portrayal of real events surrounding the British explorer Percy Fawcett, who was sent to Brazil and made several attempts to find a supposed ancient lost city in the Amazon.

A very well made and earnest film that was constantly intriguing with one or two intense sequences whilst never quite gripping me. Both Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson were excellent in what was essentially a throwback to classic film making from years gone by.

I think this is one of those films that may stay with me and demand a rewatch.

A lot camper than Barbarian, but nonetheless an enjoyable 2 hour action romp. Arnie just comes up with some of the corniest lines throughout.

Night of the Demon(1957)

Dana Andrews is an american psychologist chap who comes to london to expose the leader of an occult group. and his colleague dies in a mystery accident after falling foul of the satanists.

Top notch old style horror film full of atmosphere and solid acting. and directed by that chap jacques Tourneur who did the Cat people.
Dana andrews who was excellent in Laura gives a convincing performance who is at first sceptic about demons and witchcraft but eventually changes his mind after being cursed.
Peggy Cummins also gives a decent turn as the female lead. and Niall MacGinnis is excellent as the mad warlock who likes entertaining the local children with his magic act.

the only minor quibble is the actual demon, which, to be honest is pretty effective, but also a bit comical at the same time. although, i would still take this over a cgi demon anyday.

but a great watch. and full of creepy scenes, especially in the woods.
with even a couple of great comedy moments, especially a hilarious seance with hysterical singing. 82 out of 100.

From Director Jess Franco, brings this new release of the video nastie era. why was this banned? Me and Angie watched it with a puzzled face and laughter. Al Cliver stars as the model hunter, who is promised 10 per cent of the ransom. The make-up, Special effects are not the greatest, its like they re-used the same scenery for different parts of the film and the dubbing is worse that a Chinese film. to have on for background noise or pass time may help.

The Unholy 1988.

After horrific murders related to catholic churches, a father's will is tested as he must do battle with a demon.

This was really enjoyable flick, Ben Cross plays Father Michael, after surviving a fall without a mark, his superior Archbishop Mosely played by Hal Holbrook believes he can do battle with the evil. The film does start off a bit slow but did get better, with a good background score that stops the boredom settling in and the special effects were good but could have been better. Nicole fortier does make a nice appearance as the seducing demon. 7 out of 10.

16 Blocks (2006)

Bruce Willis does a less road trippy version of Clint's Gauntlet as a cop who escorts witness Mos Def across 16 New York blocks to his court house hearing where he'll testify against other cops led by David Morse, who naturally go all out to stop him. Of course, a bus plays a big part in this movie.

I actually prefer this to The Gauntlet as this doesn't co-star Sondra Locke and Mos Def's Eddie is kinda endearing. Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner ramps up the tension the longer the film goes on and all in all 16 Blocks is a satisfying little thriller.

this is definitely one of Seagals best films before he started eating too many sausage rolls and sporting a bizarre looking hairpiece. :laugh:up there with Commando and Lone Wolf McQuade in the action and comedy department.
great Clint Eastwood style scene as well when he kicks the asses of a bunch of mexicans in a liquer store which certainly reminded me of Dirty Harry.

A singer with her boyfriend and son move into a house that's haunted by a ruthless plantation and slave owner.

This was a pretty low budget movie from the late 80s that was good to watch, okay the acting is not best, the make up was a laugh but the story line made it worth watching. Mary Page Keller plays the singer who seems to have visions of the old plantation owner and Andrew Stephens plays her ex psychiatrist and boyfriend who gets possessed, maybe Satan isn't sexist who gets possessed.6 out of 10.

A Carpathian village is being haunted by a small girl, a coroner and medical student dwell into her death, and a witch trying to protect everyone.

Nobody could have pulled off what Mario Bava done with this movie, filmed on a low budget, that the producers ran out of funds not long into shooting and everyone working for free, how Bava persuaded the actors to do that was amazing and bring us this masterpiece. Giacomo Rossi Stuart takes the lead role of Dr. Paul Eswai, who tries to uncover a death of a child. From start to finish its full of dark atmosphere, brilliant cinematography and a good background score. One to watch on a dark night.

The Snake Woman (1961)

A decent if unspectacular British Gothic horror B-movie set in Cumbria at the end of the 19th century and was quite possibly the inspiration for Hammer's The Reptile some five years later.

I don't really think anything needs adding as the above paragraph will either make you want to see this film or not.

I love my British and Gothic horror and have seen this at least three times now. At a mere 67 minutes it doesn't outstay it's welcome.

The Theory of everything - Nice flick, but this biopic movies normally are always full of happiness never show any problems/dark areas - still an excellent job by Eddie Redmayne.

Little Evil - what a pile of crap, I like my comedy/horror movies (e.g. Tucker and Dale, Shaun of Death) - but this is the worst movie probably I saw in my life, and I already saw a lot of shitty movies lol

John Wick 3 - When the first John Wick came out, everybody was wetting their pants, a real action movie with good fights, shooting, violent - now the 3rd part looks it's already in auto-pilot, a little of introduction - 10 minutes of fight, a little more of "story", 20 minutes of fight again.. and Keanu Reeves oh my god.. this guy it's a mystery for me - How does he manage to do so many movies with that acting skills :lol:

Body of Lies (2008)

Despite very good performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and Mark Strong, i find Ridley Scott's film a bit of a slog. It's all very po-faced and talky.

The action, when we get any, is well done but there's too much eye in the sky viewpoints and not enough excitement. I realise not every film needs to be 'crash boom bang' but this lacks any real spark or tension until the last twenty minutes or so.

It is however not a criticism of the film when you say Russell Crowe phones in his performance.

The Watermen (2012)

A clan of watermen (fishermen) abduct a group of unwary travellers from their luxury yacht and take them back to their island to chop them up and sell them as bait. An intense fight for survival ensues as our intrepid young heroes try to escape with their lives.

The Watermen has everything thrown into the mix in this modern outdoor survival horror. A lot of violence,- Breast implants removed with dirty knives, arms sliced open and pitch forks through legs are just a few of the juicy highlights, as well as the usual gruesome imagery, rape, and a director who seems determined for his leading ladies to flash their boobs at every opportunity.

The film has plenty of minus points. The opening scenes are practically amateur hour with the three lead actresses seemingly reading their lines from cue cards, and the early scenes with the three guys had me almost switching off as Jason Mewes shoved his ball sack into the camera. Fortunately things soon settled down, Mewes stopped the shite impersonation of his popular Jay role from his time working with Kevin Smith and we actually had a bit of characterization. There were also a few plot holes big enough for a trawler to sail through but i can forgive those. The Watermen themselves appeared almost inhuman, their voices echoing like ambient sound rather than audible dialogue which was odd to say the least.

Admittedly i'm a fan of survival horror, and on the whole i liked this film. What set it apart for me was the setting. It's very rare for a low budget horror film to be set out at sea making the first fifty minutes quite memorable, so its only the final third that comes onto shore, albeit an island, and the film becomes generic hack n' slash in the vein of Storm Warning. The location photography was very good, at times beautiful, at other times quite foreboding.

I may well be on my own in liking this film. indeed it has an air bordering on misogyny that may put some off, but if you enjoy survival horror then it may be worth ninety minutes of your time.

The Pit and The Pendulum 1961.

16th century, Francis Bernard travels to Spain, to understand the death of his sister after she married the son of a cruel inquisitor.

With Vincent Price and Roger Corman you don't need a lot of blood and guts to make a good movie. Based on the story by Edgar Allen Poe, Price takes the role of Nicholas Medina who is the son of the Spanish inquisitor, who believes his father murdered his mother but in a cruel way. John Kerr stars as Francis who is optimistic about hie his sister died played by Barbara Steele. As with Corman, there is always dark gothic atmosphere and great cinematography by Floyd Crosby. Definitely one for watching.

The Agony of my soul found vent in one loud, long and final scream of Despair. Poe.

This was a bit of a messed up film, was decent to have the lead character to do a voice over, telling the story, but it was a bit slow and stop. The acting was a bit wooden and prolonged screaming before the killing. The way they are killed off was decent, but everyone has different tastes, make of this as you will.

I have just watched DON'T BREATHE, about a trio of thieves who break into a blind man's house. Then they get more than they expected.

I thought it was pretty decent and it was more thriller than horror. I would give it a 7/10 and the bloke who played the blind man was pretty good at it and turned out to be pretty menacing.

The 3 thieves were quite thick but overall I enjoyed it

When a man survives a car crash that leaves him disfigured, he makes an asylum his home and killing ground.

I don't think this film was to be taken seriously, the acting was never that great, the killings were not original and very 80s cheesy, the special effects and make up look very amateurish, there doesn't seem to be much plot and some goofs are very noticeable and some dark humour mixed in, but if you want a laugh and hear a different version of The House of the rising sun check it out

Gloriously dark humored descent into torture porn as America Olivo captures people and tortures them for ninety minutes.

Olivo is great, she commands the screen with a performance of maniacal glee and performs acts of mutilation and murder in gorgeous blood splattering glory. Whilst some of the depravity is sickening other parts are tremendous fun and reference horror from yesteryear such as 1972's Vault of Horror with it's novel way of blood drinking.

Despite the superb gore effects which on the whole look very realistic in their grim detail, the film does drag a bit in it's second half. When you've seen a guy tortured whilst tied to a chair for forty five minutes, to have the second forty five play out in similar circumstances does make it all a bit 'Been there, done that'. Still it's worth sticking with for fans of torture porn as you never know what act of violence will come next.

The unrated version is not for the squeamish. Seriously.

Andy, a young soldier is killed during the Vietnam war. but later turns up at his familys home after his mother prays for his return. and although he looks fine and well, apart from looking a bit pale, his behavior is rather weird and barely speaks and spends his days rocking to and fro in a rocking chair.

Cheap and entertaining horror film from Bob Clark who did Black Christmas. with special effects from Dawn of The deads tom Savini, incorporating his usual orange looking blood from that time.
Richard backus who plays the part of andy does a good job in the role, and is rather creepy as the sort of zombie/vampire creature who needs to inject blood to stop from decomposing. and freaking out his girlfriend by turning up for a date wearing black gloves and sun glasses.

Scream

I still prefer his other 'meta' film. When a feted genre director finally runs out of ideas, he grafts the slasher flick onto his last decent idea (New Nightmare), with surprising results. Diminishing the spectacle of actually enjoying the cheap thrill of watching lunkheads die horribly by winking at you the whole time.
Ahem.
