That's one a day. Everything else to come is a bonus. :pop2:

*(I've seen more than that i just can't be arsed or forget to write reviews for everything)

Kudos!

My film watching has taken a hit this year what with catching up on / re-watching a lot of TV shows etc.

You don't need to review everything you watch though... you can just log a film as watched on a certain date and it will add it to your diary.

Yeah i know, i just try and make it a bit more interesting than a simple logging of what i watch diary.

Fancied a nazi zombie film today so I picked out Jess Franco’s Oasis of the Zombies, only the second time I’ve watched this horrendous excuse of a film and this time I only lasted 50 minutes, so long because I was routing through the many boxes of dvds I own looking for a film more worthy of my time on my day off!

Now watching Frankenstein’s Army, a film I enjoyed when I watched it years ago

Put it this way, I’ve watched Zombie Creeping Flesh and Burial Ground this week and the pair of them are Oscar worthy masterpieces compared to the piece of shit that is Oasis of the Zombies! I own that and the equally shit Zombie Lake on blu ray and I couldn’t remember which was the better of the 2, it seems neither is worth anyone’s time

nosferatu42 13th September 2019 04:38 PM

I quite like Zombie Lake, it's shit but i find it entertaining.

Oasis i watched about a year ago when i got the dvd for a £1 in a charity shop.
I was overcharged.;)

Think I paid £7.99 each for the Redemption blu rays, both blind buys

The Curse of La Llorona. 2019.

A social worker ignores a plea from a mother in her charge and finds herself cursed by a vengeful spirit.

Another edition into The Conjuring universe, Linda Cardellini (Scooby Doo) plays the mother and social worker) who ignores the pleases of Patricia (Patricia Velasquez, The Mummy Returns) who was targeted by La Llorona. Raymond Cruz (Under Seige) plays the exiled priest turned witch Doctor.

Aside this being a story of folklore/urban myth, this has a very dark tone to it, the plot of the story is a bit thin with one or two jump scenes. The acting was good especially by the children who keep up with the suspense but its not nail biting as its meant to be, wait for the price to drop and don't pay the HMV price i did. 5-6 out of 10.

It is what it is really.

Here's what i said back in July.

Quote:

I can't help but love Eurocine productions especially the messier ones like this Jess Franco effort.

Made up of scenes cobbled together from other movies - or are other movies cobbled together from scenes from this movie? - it's inept at best and yet also rather fun. It lacks many of Franco's trademarks (No long zoomy sex scenes here, okay, just one) and possesses none of the lurid gore the Italian zombie films were splattering us with at the time and although it's well photographed it's not particularly atmospheric.

In fact Oasis of the Zombies doesn't have an awful lot in it's favour...except the zombies themselves. I love the way they look. All gnarled and (live) worm ridden, just as if they'd actually come out of the ground. Knowing Eurocine, they probably had.

Not recommended but i did find some sort of perverse pleasure in it's shoddiness.

Dead Silence 2007.

After receiving a package with a ventriloquist doll and his wife's mysterious death, Jamie returns home to Raven's Fair to confront a curse on the families.

From Leigh Whannell and James Wan creators of Saw comes this little gem of a horror based on their own idea of a urban legend of Mary Shaw and her dolls that she had created in her image to find the perfect doll.

It does have its gore moments but not as bad or thrilling as the Saw movies with a twist of a ghost story with its atmospheric tone and creepy background score. Judih Roberts (Eraserhead) dons the creepy make-up as Mary the ventriloquist, Donnie Whalberg as the detective in charge. Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) as Jamie who wants the answers to the curse. This is one for the lights to be out and enjoyed.

Hope you enjoy Transylvania 6-500 as much as i did Treb:pop2:

Dracula (1979, John Badham)

Well, I had to, didn't I?
It's still a bit stiff tbh. Though the sets are lavish certainly. Is it Shoestring?
He's not that dynamic in his role. The one proper scare still works mind ;)
Next!!!

Beyond derision. Stoopid people do stupid things with dolls.

Performance

It having been a dogs age since (Channel 4 to be precise)
I perused this last. Chas needs to hide from his associates, overhearing of a place that his colleagues wouldn't know about, he enters a world of shifting identities .... Still a uniquely British film. Must rewatch soonest methinks

Leprechaun Returns
Critters Attack

Lumping these together as they are both very lumpy indeed. Yes, I still think that Krytes are cute , but a witless storyline demeans all of us. The little Oirish feller is quite violent tbh, but the female empowerment begins to grate. Humbug!

Nympha (2007)

The lovely Tiffany Shepis stars in this Italian piece of nunsploitation.

The story of a girl (Shepis) who joins the strict New Order convent in Italy is remarkable in it's unrelenting joylessness. Despite Tiff being au naturel for swathes of it's running time the scenes of lesbian love are somewhat diluted by the fact she undergoes sickening perversions in the name of God throughout the film.

So she has her ear drums perforated with a scalpel, followed by acid dripped into her eyes, her hands horrifically burned and her tongue cut out as well. Not all at once, throughout the film. Shepis is excellent and her portrayal of pain is harrowing and technically the film does well for a low budget production, however it's a joyless ninety minutes and it revels in it's ravishing grimness the likes i've not seen since Martyrs.

Looking back, I feel that watching these 2 and the Banana Splits thingy in the same week may have coloured my view somewhat. All 3 are violent enough etc. But this obsession with 'diversity' is quite insulting considering how Hypocritewood has represented some of them thar 'minorities' in the past. Plus the realisation that only Samuel Jackson is allowed to say the n word now (avoid also the excreta that is the new Shaft (watched at mates' behest)). Ahem. Rant over.

Extreme Prejudice (1987, Walter Hill)

About as macho as it gets tbh. Now that I can see it in a complete fashion that is. Old school in that even the Mehican he look white greeengo . Nolte walks like he has Gary Cooper in his arse. Ironside pouts far more than I remembered. Much hilarity.
I await not the all non binary musical version
Though with Hill, you never can tell ...

TEN SECONDS TO HELL (1959)

After World War II, a group of ex German soldiers are hired to be bomb disposal in Berlin. They pool half their pay and whoever survives after three months gets the share of the money. There is a particular rivalry between two of the group and a determination to be the last man alive and pocket all the money. Great suspense from Hammer Films.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Generally i think Part VII is one of the lesser entries in the series, meaning it's one of the ones i watch least of all, but seeing it for the first time in a few years last night was quite refreshing.

The actual plot of the telekinetic girl, Tina, as ably played by Lar Park Lincoln i remembered clearly, and her struggles with her psychiatrist. Dr. Crews bring a new dimension to the series rather than simply just having Jason Vorhees slash and kill unhappy campers at notorious Camp Crystal Lake.

In fact it's the slashing parts of the film that let it down overall. Even if it sports the comical but original sleeping bag / tree death that was used again in Freddy Vs Jason some 15 years later. Jason himself looks great and Kane Hodder in his first performance as the undead killer owns the role, but it's the kill sequences themselves that are hacked to bits by the censor in order to avoid the dreaded X rating in America that spoil the film. It's a shame as Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is actually not a bad and largely original entry in the series.

Good Morning... and Goodbye! (1967)

Surprised at the average rating this gets from Letterboxd users. To me it seemed like a series of out takes from other Myer films pieced together and then given a voice over to attempt to make it some sort of story.

If Eurocine did Russ Myer films then Good Morning... and Goodbye! would be their benchmark.

Taking place not long after the first Austin is on his honeymoon not relishing that Vanessa is in fact a fembot sent too kill him.

Elsewhere Doctor Evil has come up with the plan of destroying Austin by going back in time and stealing his mojo, so he can't stop him holding America to ransom with his " death star" which he code names the Alan parson project much to the bemusement of son Scott. We have Mini me introduced in this film. It's up to Austin to get back his mojo and stop Doctor Evil. 8.5/10

Intruder. The night shift of a closing down supermarket find more than prices being slashed in this ludicrously entertaining late 80s comedy horror that is so gloriously camp and OTT it almost borders on being a Naked Gun type spoof at times. The fact it makes use of some stock incidental music that was also used for the "exciting/scary" scenes in 80s Aussie soap opera Sons and Daughters just makes it funnier. Stupid but enjoyable.

Yor (1983, Anthony M Dawson)

A universal story really. Who hasn't woken up one day and decided "Today I am going to manifest my destiny !!!"
And how. Featuring the most gore that I have seen in a PG rated movie:lol:, our titular Teuton travels the land "righting wrongs" ie SBU
The stirring music helps a lot ;)
Would make a great double bill with Teenage Caveman imho.
The Mill Creek release looks somewhat betterer than ... other prints that I have seen cough.

rabd cannibals

RAbid. / Cannibal Apocalypse.
Cronenberg's tale of porno actress Marilyn Chambers as Rose, who gets involved in a motorcycle crash but luckily is whisked away to a local medical clinic who specialize in skin grafts and face lifts. Here we come across a whole range of rather strange patients, who should have been refereed to some sort of psychiatric hospital, before they ever thought about cosmetic surgery.. Unfortunately for Rose ,while they manage to save her life, them mad scientists/doctors, have also managed to give her a parasitic creature that lives in her armpit and causes Rose to stab people with it,when she gets a hankering for some blood, And just to make matters worse, her victims are then transformed into rabid like killers, frothing at the mouth like they had just chewed on a bar of soap...Its all pretty grim stuff, from Santa getting machined gunned down in a shopping mall, to bodies being dumped into garbage trucks and construction workers with nothing better to do than attack people with pneumatic drills, Cronenberg's early films are bleak and bizarre but also compelling viewing, with none of the slickness he acquired with his later work, everything is grim and bleak, and sex either gets you killed or mad, or both...
Then just for a change of pace, I went for Cannibal Apocalypse, a tale of people biting other people who then cause the victims to go a bit rabid, and then attack other people, who then go mad and attack other people, well you get the drift. John Saxon does his best to look like he is vaguely interested in a plot so full of holes it looks like Giovanni Lambardo Radice stomach at the end of the film.Still you do not watch an Italian cannibal movie for its neo realism or its coherent story line, which is a good job really because there isn't any...I recently saw a documentary where they mentioned that rabies was a big thing in the 1970s, like Panda Pops and space hoppers presumably, which is why we had a glut of people frothing at the mouth chasing people, although nowhere does it mention an outbreak of cannibalism, well not in any Public Information film I ever saw anyway. Thankfully no indigenous ethnic groups of South America were exposed to a bunch of Italians yelling at them this time because it's all set in the good old US of A,or at lest a simile of any rate, and while I do luv this silly gut muncher I do feel sorry for the likes of John Saxon, who surely should have been destined for better things than running around a sewer with Giovanni Lambardo Radice, while trying not to step on rat's,

BATTLE OF BRITAIN (1969)

My own 50th Anniversary showing of the film which had it's London premiere 15th September 1969. It's also Battle Of Britain Day today.
The first film I ever saw at the cinema. My recollections are vague but I do remember my family and friends going together and my brother talking about the pilot when his goggles filled up with blood.

The Chant Of Jimmie Blacksmith (Fred Schepisi)

A lesson in manners. Tommy Lewis plays Jimmie, a 'bloody black' in 19th century Australia. He also learns some harder lessons along the way sadly, which culminates in his full expression of those same sentiments. In spades. No pun at all intended. Still quite moving.

SymbioticFunction 15th September 2019 05:44 PM

Finally saw 2007's Grindhouse (via an uncut German blu-ray). It was very interesting to see Planet Terror in a full widescreen ratio (there was additional picture information at the sides so it wasn't merely a case of cropping the top and bottom). But what really surprised me was just how different Tarantino's Death Proof was, during the second half of that film. Lots of alternate takes and totally new shots. It was fascinating to revisit these two films in a different way, would recommend seeking out Grindhouse even if you own standalone releases of Planet Terror and Death Proof.

The Amazing Spider-man 2012.

After being bitten by a genetic altered spider, Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man. He engages with Dr Curtis Connors who was his father's research partner who is working on cross species genetic who has plans of his own.

I have always found this more entertaining than the Tobey Maguire version of the web slinging hero. Andrew Garfield takes the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who seems a bit more hyper and full of energy. Emma Stone plays the love interest Gwen Stacy and daughter of police chief played well by Dennis Leary. Connors is played brilliantly by Rhys Ifans. Uncle Ben and Aunt May are played by Sally Field and Martin Sheen.

The special effects are good aswell as the P.O.V shots unless you suffer from motion sickness only downside was the CGI effects of The Lizard that could have been a bit better and more realistic than a knock off from some cheap 50s B movie monster. 7-8 out of 10.

The Amazing Spider-man 2. 2014.

Spider-Man returns to protect New York from Oscorp Corporation and faces a battle from Electro and Green Goblin.

Andrew Garfield returns as the hero in the red and blue spandex as well as Emma Stone as the love Gwen, Jamie Foxx stars as the unluckiest worker Max Dillon who becomes the villain Electro and teams up with Harry Osborn.

This was a start of a fast paced action that slowly became a mere drama film then back to a action packed film filled with good/decent special effects and some comedy which seems to be a small nod to the comic books. There is a small appearance by Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn and Paul Giamatti as Aleksei/Rhino. Decent sequel which lived up to the first movie 7-8 out of 10.

nosferatu42 15th September 2019 08:01 PM

I didn't mind the first Amazing Spiderman although didn't take to Garfield movie but absolutely hated the second, Electro and Rhino are just plain wrong in that film, at least in comparison to what i grew up reading.

I prefer the Maguire films but it might also have something to do with Kirsten Dunst with red hair being in those films as well , They seem much closer to what i read as a kid. Although they still f*cked up other stuff.

I really like the new kid as parker but don't like the changing of other characters or the techno suit. But thought the Vulture was great, haven't seen the new one but always liked Mysterio.

Spiderman films are a mixed bag for me, Spiderman 2 being the best.:pop2:

Dave Boy 15th September 2019 08:50 PM

One trouble with the new Spider-Man Tom Holland is that he spends more time with his mask off than on. Leave the fracking mask on. We all know it's you under there. Your identity is supposed to be secret. In the last film he has a long talk with Mary Jane on the bridge with no mask on. Sheesh!

MrBarlow 15th September 2019 09:10 PM

I have yet to watch homecoming all the way through but heard mixed responses about it, all about Tom Holland, alot of people praised Michael Keaton as a good villain
