Daddy Day Camp

Eddie Murphy is fired therefore he opens up a Day Care Centre with 2 of his friends. Follows the usual clichés where they can't handle it only to get through it. Along the way they encounter a tough Prep School Headmistress played by Angelica Houston. Not bad but not great.

Men, Women And Children

A Jason Reitman Film based on multiple stories focusing on how Technology is influencing and affecting Adults and Teenagers from Adam Sandler hiring Escorts, his Wife signing up for a Dating Website and his Son looking up Porn. There is also Jennifer Garner going too far regarding constantly checking her Daughters Texts and E-Mails, from a Teen on a RPG, A Mother helping her Daughter's Website and a Teenage Girl, who has a Eating Disorder.

This is a more serious version of films like Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve and thankfully I found this on Film 4 as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Emma Thompson narrates.

A Prairie Home Companion

Robert Altman directed film which follows a live Country Music Radio show which appears top be it's last show. Meryl Streep, Woody Harrelson and Lindsey Lohan are the main stars. I enjoyed it but there were a couple of elements I didn't like.

A Time to Kill (1996)

Joel Schumacher's take on John Grisham's powerful story of a murder trial and the racial tensions and violence it brings to a small Mississippi town is a brutal incendiary thriller.

A stellar ensemble cast on top form - McConaughey, L Jackson, Bullock, Spacey, both Sutherland's, to name but six of them - bring this classic drama to life.

A Time to Kill is one of those films that when watched could be discussed for hours such is it's subject matter, but i won't. I will simply say it's a fantastic movie that holds so much emotion and is up there with the very best the nineties... no, cinema as a whole, has to offer. A terrific movie which is sadly just as relevant today 25 years on as it was back then.

Irma Vep (1996)

An interesting piece from director Olivier Assayas starring Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung playing herself as she gets a role in a French film - a remake of silent classic Les vampires - and all the struggles and strifes that come with making a movie with a distinctly odd director (Jean-Pierre Léaud).

Having re-watched Asia Argento's Scarlet Diva recently it remains in my thinking and Irma Vep felt and looked like a continuation of that way of thinking. Semi autobiographical, ad-hoc script, complete Guerrilla film making.

Maggie suffers a sense of isolation being the only non-French speaker among the cast and witnesses the on set turmoil and petty jealousies first hand. In some way it's an essay on French cinema of the time, in fact an interview Maggie does with a French journo sums it all up beautifully as they couldn't give a damn about the Les Vampires remake and are more interested in Maggie's more familiar roles alongside Jackie Chan.

There's a lengthy scene shot in a Paris sex shop as Maggie and a couple of costume women from the film kit her out in a skintight latex catsuit. It's all very impromptu and natural and not as pervy as you might expect (or hope). Yet it's the catsuit that eventually gives Maggie the power to come to terms and navigate the snobbishness of French film making at the time. The scenes of her (and her stunt double) prowling the rooftops in their latex outfits are especially memorable and although clearly objectified she is quite obviously liberated from all the bullshit.

Irma Vep isn't perfect by any means. Some scenes are overlong, even in a ninety odd minute movie, and it's largely unfocused , jumping randomly from scene to scene. But it is a provocative and at times quite funny satirical look at cinema.

THE HAUNTED STRANGLER (1958)

Boris Karloff investigates The Haymarket Strangler, who was hanged 20 years before. Karloff is sure that someone else was responsable for the murders and finds himself transformed in to the murderer after finding a scalpel buried with the corpse..
Good horror with some intense knife slashing. Boris goes really insane in this one. Mad as hatter!

Tsk! Grip of the Strangler to the British among us.

I really like the film actually even if Karloff's idea of transformation is to simply bite his lower lip.

Lorenzo Lamas flick.

Seven Sinners (1936)

An intriguing and at times genuinely thrilling British murder mystery based on a play by Arnold Ridley and Bernard Merivale.

Edmund Lowe plays an American detective trailing a criminal gang from France to the UK, along the way he meets up with insurance investigator Constance Cummings as the duo attempt to avert disaster striking.

Featuring some witty dialogue and likable performances from Lowe and Cummings, the gripping story zips along culminating in a superbly realised breathtaking train wreck.

When approaching a movie such as this from the thirties, British and lacking a big Hollywood budget you kind of know what to expect. Well Seven Sinners confounded all my expectations. I thought it was a real gem of a movie.

The dvd which i bought in a previous Network sale now seems to be out of print. Providing it's still with Network this will be highly recommended should it get a future blu-ray release.

A somewhat relevant flick, even if it is set in the sixties cough.

Must be many years since I saw this last, on Vipco VHS.
Good movie with some great images as the troops emerge from the sea and stand staring from the trees.
Bloodless movie but good fun, and Peter Cushing's in it so all is well.

Alucarda (1977)

If i were to describe this movie in one word then that word would be 'shrill'.

There's too much f*cking screaming, especially in the final third. All the wonderful satanic, softcore Gothic imagery, dragged down by constant ear bursting screaming.

Should be retitled Scream and Scream Again, Then Scream Some More!

A sense of freedom, story of Jimmy Boyle a Glaswegian gangster in the 60s,
The original tv version 95min, been about 15yrs since last seen this and it is about my 3rd time I can't compare it to the DVD version because I've never seen it but it's 10 min shorter 85min, apparently DVD version been re-dubbed to tonne down the Scottish accent, let's just say the guys a nutter and doesn't give a £uck, £uck you, £uck society, and if he can make life living hell for the screws then £uck them as well, made in late 70s when films concentrated more on brutal side of the film rather than the violence and controversial side, highly recommended.

Secret Admirer (1985)

A comedy about a love letter going to the wrong person which then escalates as additional people end up seeing the very same letter.

Whilst not what i'd call a laugh out loud comedy Secret Admirer is one of those films that is easy to watch, keeps you engaged throughout and plays out like an enjoyable farce rather than a typical teen comedy.

The cast including C. Thomas Howell and Kelly Preston are all good especially Lori Loughlin, although she couldn't play frumpy and put upon if she tried. The cast is fleshed out with strong turns by Fred Ward, Leigh Taylor-Young and the constantly watchable Dee Wallace, all who end up as unwilling victims of the anonymous love letter.

Touch of death....hmmm....where to start....

This story itself is pretty good - cannibal serial killer stalking the lonely hearts columns to kill and rip off rich widows to feed his gambling addiction finds himself ‘at risk’ by a shoddy copycat killer leaving clues which are seemingly leading police directly to him. The execution however, is pretty poor. The script is terrible! The newsreader’s lines sound as if someone has made a note of ideas of what the news reader might say only to them never go back and write them properly. Another part has the newsreader read out the suspect’s DNA code (??) and our killer reacts with “That’s my DNA!”. Crikey.

The music throughout was awful. I think it was supposed to be some kind of classical music, as the characters were dancing and like motioning waves with their hands the way folk do in films when they’re enjoying classical, but the music sounded as if it was straight out of a circus tent.

I get the impression that Fulci was a bit down on his luck when the producers, hoping to cash in on the “Fulci” name offered him this job. Exploitation at it’s finest! And I certainly feel exploited!

COMA (1978)

Dr. Geneviève Bujold becomes suspicious when a number of healthy patients go into a coma when brought out from anesthetic after an operation.
Her investigations take her to the sinister Jefferson Institute..

Great thriller directed by Michael Crichton. The music by Jerry Goldsmith kicks in nearly half way through the movie as events start to take a menacing turn at the Institute and the coma patients scene there is haunting.
It's about time this move had a UK Blu ray release..or any release!

Prey (1977)

Norman J Warren's sci-fi shocker is an exercise in what you can do with three actors - Barry Stokes, Glory Annen and Sally Faulkner - and barely any budget and still come up with a well made slice of pulp horror.

I've seen this countless times over the years and whilst i do like it i also acknowledge it's not Warren's best film.

Last night i rewatched it whilst listening to the informative, engaging and entertaining commentary between English Gothic author and critic Jonathan Rigby and the likable Norman J Warren himself.

You'll be sadly missed Norman J. Rest in peace.

The Curse of El Charro (2005)

Not even some semi decent religious / horror imagery and a brief cameo from Lemmy can save this long winded - nothing happens until ten minutes from the end - college girls get knocked off by evil Mexican spirit movie. Andrew Bryniarski plays El Charro but you'd never know.

Alice Cooper's daughter, Calico, plays exactly the same role as she does for her dad on stage, but it's very blink and you'd miss it.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Richard Pryor is Blind and Gene Wilder is Deaf and they are accused of a murder that they both were there for. Cue madcap shenanigans in which they frustrate the Police chasing them and the 2 killers (Joan Severance and Kevin Spacey) I thought that this film would be a bit outdated (Other than a potential scene) it isn't, It's quite a decent watch really.

Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone

A Space Traveler tries to rescue 3 women who were kidnapped by Michael Ironside on a distant planet. He is assisted by Molly Ringwald. The F/X are definitely of it's time and I'm guessing Colombia Pictures were trying to get their version of Star Wars and Indiana Jones out there.

St. Trinians

Recent update which sees Rupert Everett as The Headmistress of the Boarding School with the quite mischievous pupils. Certainly as quite the cast including Gemma Arterton and Colin Firth. It's silly, can't be taken seriously but I find it thoroughly entertaining.

A Walk Among The Tombstones

Liam Neeson is The Private Eye who is hired by a Drug Dealer to find the sadistic killers of his wife. Whilst still enjoyable, when I initially watched it, I found it to be completely enthralling but I found it be a bit slower from what I remembered.

Island Zero (2018)

Written by novelist Tess Gerritsen and directed by her son Josh, Island Zero is a well crafted horror thriller about the inhabitants of an island off Maine cut off from the mainland when they lose all power and the ferry stops coming. Adding to the tensions, anyone who ventures towards the mainland in a boat are never heard from again.

Dealing with subjects like isolation and dwindling food supplies in stores, this felt rather too realistic in this age of Covid 19. A slow burn movie, Island Zero quietly builds mood and tension thanks to some realistic acting - a special mention to Laila Robins here. It's not often a sixty year old tv actress plays the heroine in a movie such as this, and she's brilliant as the island doctor - excellent island locations and some impressive photography.

The atmosphere becomes stifling in a heady Stephen King / John Carpenter like way enhanced no end by what can only be described as a Carpenter-esq soundtrack giving the film a feel of The Fog or Storm of the Century.

Whilst Island Zero is low budget (From what i understand a mere thirty five people worked on it) every penny is well spent in what i would describe as a thoughtful sci-fi horror film which i enjoyed very much.

One thing that made me laugh was Gary Cooper. I'm sure Spielberg must have watched this prior to making Raiders as Cooper and Indiana Jones wear the exact same outfits.

Cooper even wears a brown leather jacket later on.

A couple taking a little break to the English countryside pass two mysterious ladies on the side of a quite rural road one in clear view and one hiding behind a tree raising suspicions and an unsettling feeling in the woman but her boyfriend is not convinced and puts it down to her mind playing tricks. But this is no trick these beautiful ladies are hitchhiking picking up unsuspecting men and taking them back to their rural mansion for vintage wine sex and death. One of the ladies brings back a man that she takes a shine to and lets him live but he is strangely drawn to her and the mansion and he keeps returning even though each morning he wakes up sicker and bloodier but he can not pull himself away from the place even when more and more men start showing up and disappearing.

This was a first time viewing for me and i loved it. The setting in the mansion is very striking with plenty of atmosphere the women although their acting is a bit ropey are quite intriguing almost pulling you in like the men they are luring back to their deaths. It's not the run of the mill vampires sinking their teeth into their victims they are brutally killing these men and almost bathing in their blood. Aside from all the blood and atmosphere this is a very erotic affair with almost every second scene in the bedroom from one on one beatial sex to a blood soaked three way but its all done pretty tastefully more erotic than sleazy.

In Hong Kong tucked away in a run down apartment block is a small dumpling shop run by former gynecologist Aunt Mei who in her job had carried out hundreds of abortions. While doing these she somehow discovered the main ingredient for her dumplings that help restore youthfulness in anyone who consumes them. Former actress Ching who is desperately trying to hold on to her womanising husband goes to Aunt Mei to try and reverse the ageing process to get him interested in her again. Soon the results are plain for everyone to see and her husband turns his attention from his young mistress back to his wife but not she must go to even more extreme lengths to maintain her new found beauty.

What can i say about Dumplings other than ewwwwwww

I used to love eating dumplings when i used to go out for a meal at the chinese but i don't think i will be able to now well not the boiled one anyway . It's not just what's in them but its how they eat them in this film the close ups the noise of them sucking on them was pretty gross. There is one pretty rough abortion scene which put me on edge thinking about the actual real life situation and how brutal that must be for a woman physically and mentally.

All that aside there is a great story here of just how far people will go for that level of beauty and endless youth people seek now more than ever making the film even more relevant today than on its release 17 years ago.

But Cheng Lai will not give up her dream for anyone or anything and so begins a brutal rampage against anyone who moves into the apartment i hopes of driving the price down.

This is a pretty unique story with its dark take on the materialism of people and how far people will go to obtain the often unattainable obviously not to the extremes depicted here but people do some crazy things to have the best things to be better than everyone else. The way the story is told works really well constantly jumping from the present to the past from childhood and where the obsession of a sea view came from to the brutal killings to the reasons for the killings i does jump all over the place but they way its done flowed really well and it was never distracting or confusing.

When i said a brutal killing spree i really did mean it because the kills are very graphic and brutal there are some really nasty kills and so much gore but not cartoonish gore very realistic which makes it all the more real well for the most part not sure about the guy smoking a joint with his intestines hanging out  and anyway. A group of friends on a holiday befriend a woman who is heading to the islands where she cares for a blind girl and they offer to drop her off after one of the men accidently breaks her camera but the main reason for their kindness is the men all want to be more than friends. When they reach the island it seems pretty deserted and with a storm on the way they are forced in to spending the night rather than sailing and risking the elements. The only sign of life on the island is a mysterious woman they can never catch up with and the blind girl they find scared out of her wits hiding from a man she says has wiped out the entire island.

It's a pretty slow build but the location and atmosphere really helps build the tension so it's always interesting and never lacking. But once it gets going it's pretty brutal and George Eastman is great as The Beast. I really like the back story of how the killer became a crazed cannibal anything that involves kids is always so taboo but it really helps to show just how mad this man has become.

A man is hunted by a priest after he escapes a lab where experiments have been carried out on him the man has supernatural powers that can make him regenerate from any injuries almost entirely ruling out death. On arrival in a small village he goes on a killing spree and with no known way to kill him the situation looks pretty bleak.

I straight up love this film its hilarious in parts and brutal as f**k in others. The whole Super Bowl party just cracks me up everytime it feels like they are showing the whole game at some points .GO TEAM

George Eastman is fantastic here just his sheer size and presence on the screen is pretty intimidating and without the makeup of Anthro we can really appreciate how demented he can look. The kills are absolutely fantastic also the drill in the nurses temple the saw through the top of the skull and the oven kill are all so so great to watch so nasty.

Just a couple of stupid things that annoyed me slightly firstly a small gripe has to be how long it took the girl to undo the straps in the bed i was getting annoyed just waiting saying out loud of for f**k sake open the bloody things:lol: The big thing was that bloody kid RRRRAAAAGGGGEEEE inducing little shit

That aside the film is a blast with a nice little albeit too short cameo from Michele Soavi.

Oh and i almost forgot to mention the soundtrack that was reused in Pieces even down to the marching band music from the the Super Bowl having not seen this for years and watching Pieces again only recently it's even funnier.
