I tried to watch this via YouTube back in 2020 and I only got halfway through, I agree it is very dull.

There are one or two good snippets and the grains of a decent film. However what got to the screen is just rubbish. There's a brilliantly intriguing idea revealed in the closing moments that could be a movie in itself, and a decent one at that. Sadly the budget was probably gone by then. All fifteen dollars.

Monster on the Campus (1958)

Another creature feature directed by Jack Arnold about an extinct fish which turns everything it comes into contact with into raving monsters, be it a dragonfly, a pet dog (with ludicrous teeth) or people.

There's a reasonable amount of tension, one or two scares and some pretty strong violence for it's time - one unlucky fella gets a hatchet in the face, a woman is dragged around by her hair - but as with many films of this ilk there's also too much time taken with people in lab coats sat around discussing things, not to mention random acts of dumbness by people who should know better instead of getting to the nitty gritty of Neanderthal mutations running round killing folk.

The Eureka Blu-ray looks very pretty. Will probably rewatch it tonight at some stage to listen to Kim and Stephen's commentary on the 'Neanderthal killers on a college campus' sub-genre.

A interesting and enjoyable adaptation of Dracula by Jess Franco none of his T&A here. The great Christopher Lee once again dons the cloak of the count. He is joined by Herbert Lom and Van Helsing and the aways insane looking Klaus Kinski as Renfield.

Now watching the manliest and coolest man in the universe.

Night Creatures. 1962.

Another forgotten classic by Hammer, a small village running a bootleg operation and the king' s men come calling to stop and arrest those responsible but they are always one step ahead and local legend of the Marsh Phantoms. Peter Cushing plays the local town minister and hiding his past. Patrick Allen plays Captain Collier sent to find the alcohol runners and uncovers that a vicious pirate may still be alive.

This was certainly enjoyable right from the start to end, it does have its flaws with the effects of the night sky still looking like it's day time but the period costumes are nicely done with the set pieces and Hammer usual Michael Ripper having a bit more screen time, and Oliver Reed charming the local young lady Yvonne Romain.

The Hackers (1988, John Duncan)

SOV caper.
One of the betterer efforts I've seen. Technically that is, the story has bald spots, it's that worn out
For all that, I enjoyed it.
Housesitting can be easy, no? Feed the plants, water the cats etc. Sadly the crew that's been hired to fix the roof have ... other interests ahem.
Grotty enough, if only it didn't end on the greatest cliche of them all ahem.

Love Gods From Planet Zero (2021, Jim Kimble)

Two friends are hired to deliver a package. When they end up with slightly more than they bargained for, they find that they are now on a wanted list. Could we call this one quirky? The black and white photography would suggest so. Features one of the better child performances that I've seen in years. Needs a rewatch ....

“Bait”

This has been on my ‘must watch’ list for ages.

It’s about these two women who own a cafe. They’re shown bantering with some customers. One of the women is is Irish, and I think the Irish accent sort of lends itself to comedy. So shes cracking wise one minute (with Charlie “Uncle Peter from Reeves & Mortimer” Chuck!), and then the next minute there’s all this violence.

Its a violent revenge thriller that tries to blend in some comedy now and again, but without any real devotion to either the violence OR the comedy. It wasn’t great. Wasn’t too good at all. It gets really decent reviews too [emoji848] not sure why.

Some films do the mix of comedy and serious violence quite well, films such as like “Lock Stock…”or something. But Bait doesn’t manage it. It ended up feeling disjointed and confusing. The bad guy was really overacting his attempt at being the smarmy, sleazy, smart-Alec gangster character too.

The Monolith Monsters (1957)

A meteor lands outside a small Californian desert town. On contact with water it grows and expands into a giant crystalline alien rock like monolith er' monsters that keep toppling over then growing into even more mighty monoliths whose fragments when touched turn humans into stone.

Quite an original idea in an era flooded by original science fiction ideas. Although it borrows a bit from films such as Them! (1954) with it's desert town in panic storyline a theme so favoured by it's writer Jack Arnold, it also delves that bit deeper into characters such as allowing English born Les Tremayne a side story of a news editor determined to use the disaster as a way to achieve personal success, rather than characters where cause and effect are the main requirements.

The huge crystalline monoliths are impressive effects as is the destruction of the dam in a bid to destroy them even though it's clearly the 'flashflood' effect on show to visitors as part of the Universal Studios backlot tour.In fact if you look closely at the town of San Angelo you'll notice a striking resemblance to Hill Valley from Back to the Future.

The Monolith Monsters to this day remains a unique and enjoyable science fiction film which looks splendid via the new Eureka Blu-ray.

Well waddya' know. There is a Neanderthal Killer on the loose sub-genre. There are also a ton of references to the classic Orson Welles film Touch of Evil which, incidentally, i only put in my wish list last weekend. I think Stephen and Kim were screwing with my head the amount of times it was discussed throughout this film. Not even subtle subliminal messages. More like hitting me with a sledge hammer go and buy the damn thing bludgeoning type hints.

The guys also pointed out within the first few frames that a car driven by Arthur Franz just passed The Munsters house as well as the Hill Valley clock tower.

Repossessed. 1990.

Linda Blair is possessed again by the devil and it's upto Leslie Nielsen to exorcise the demon, with Ned Beatty as the television evangelist who wants to broadcast the exorcism to boost ratings for his show and Anthony Starke as the young priest who is questioning his faith. I haven't watched this in a long time and right from the start I was in hysterics, how many stairs does one house have, the almost parody of Tubular Bells in the background, Gene Okerlund and Jesse Ventura doing their commentary, even they must have had a few laughs off the screen.

Ocean's Thirteen

After the abomination that was Ocean's Twelve, this is a much welcome Sequel to Ocean's Eleven. They are back in Vegas in order to get revenge on Al Pacino who screwed over one of their own. I found this to be a really enjoyable easy watch with Pacino excelling as a slimy Casino Owner. Pacino is reunited with his Sea Of Love co-star Ellen Barkin.

Basil The Great Mouse Detective

Disney's spin on Sherlock Holmes which see's a Mouse named Basil try to find a kidnapped Toymaker. As with most Disney Animation Films, the Villain is always the best character and this one has the maniacal and egotistical Ratigan (Who's a Rat but doesn't like being called one) and his henchcat. This is one of my favorite Disney Animation Films and one of it's most under-rated (By some)

They don't make them like this anymore

Nuts

Barbara Streisand is a woman accused of Murder who goes to Court in order to proof she is Sane. Richard Dreyfuss is her Legal Aid Attorney who tries to assist her. This is a powerful Film with great performances from it's leads. TBH, I wasn't aware this was actually released on DVD but it was a pleasant find in CEX (Really cheap as well)

Empire Of Light

Drama centered around Olivia Coleman who is a Cinema Employee in 1980 and experiences Mental Issues. She befriends a Black Employee, who experiences Racial Hatred. Tobey Jones is the friendly Projectionist. It's a good Film and wonder if Cinemas were like that in the 80's.

As this was released by Fox Searchlight, I highly doubt it sees a DVD/Blu-Ray release.

Fracture

Antony Hopkins shoots his Wife and confesses but is able to outsmart Prosecuting Lawyer played by Ryan Gosling. This is a good intelligent Thriller without being complicated and twists that aren't stupid. It does have an excellent supporting Cast which includes Rosemond Pike and David Straitharn

Manhattan Baby. 1982.

The one Fulci movie that I can never finish, between the 30-40 minute mark and it be switched off, tonight however I managed to stick it out right to the end that has the same feel as The Beyond with the woman and white eyes and strangely almost same background score.

We got archaeologist Christopher Connelly and his wife Laura Lenzi with their daughter Brigitta Boccoli in Egypt, he opens a tomb and the spirit of...someone who possesses their daughter and he is blinded. Back home weird stuff happens and brutal killings. Giovanni Frezza plays their son who who thankfully doesn't scream alot so that's a bonus but i'm still confused by it but now that I have seen it I can lay it to bed and leave it alone now.

The Bubble (Judd Apatow)

Hypocritewood still loves to make-a the movies about themselves doncha know?
When production is threatened by the covid, the studio force lockdown on the cast, what happens is equally silly and stupid.
A Tiktokker (?) is added to the cast because of reasons, she is played by some relative of Apatow.
Tbh I only watched this because of Karen Gillan (who gets to practice that "screaming at nowt" again tee hee) and her and Serafinowicz were the saving grace really.
Next!!!

Point Blank. 1967.

Lee Marvin steals the show as Walker who is double crossed, left for dead but survives and goes on a war path of revenge and manages to break a sweat while doing so. Marvin expressions never changes which fits in the determination of the character driven to revenge and get his share of a loot. John Boorman who went on to make other memorable films manages to keep the audience entertained with his style of direction and, steady paced from the opening to the closing credits.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)

John Cusack plays a city reporter invited to self made millionaire art collector Kevin Spacey's home in Savannah, Georgia, to write an article about him. However it's not long before Spacey is accused of murdering a young male prostitute (Jude Law) who it turns out was the antique collector's secret lover. (This is fiction, not reality).

Clint Eastwood's film, based on John Berendt's 1994 non-fiction book of the same name, is less a Grisham esq deep south court room gripper thriller and more a love letter to Savannah itself. It's two and a half hours long and delightfully leisurely. The town's sultry, seedy, seductive and at times voodoo soaked atmosphere almost makes the plot seem occasionally incidental.

Stars John Cusack and Kevin Spacey are both excellent yet are left at the wayside by a brilliant performance by The Lady Chablis (A Savannah resident playing herself) who has all the best lines and definitely all the laughs. Whilst Eastwood regular Geoffrey Lewis turns in the most bizarre performance as a jury member with real flies attached to him via threads so they can't fly away.

This underrated film sinks it's (ruby red) nails into you during the first half hour and lingers long in the memory afterwards.

The dvd image and sound leave something to be desired which is a shame. This came out in 1998 on dvd and was one of 'the early ones'. This could really do with a nice HD restoration.

Classic Clint who plays the man with no name who's called Joe who arrives in a one horse town that is disputed by two groups , Clint sets out playing both ends against the middle and playing the two against each other, a classic with a fantastic soundtrack and the classic shoot out . Aim for heart .

20 years later the boss man takes over charge of a project developing skin for burn victims . Problems arrive when the dead CiA agent body is used thing take a turn for the worse when he comes back to life and then the shit really hits the fan when the grafted skin becomes hard as steel .

Nothing great but was enjoyable enough , Kane Hodder plays the metal beast.

Malignant. 2021.

Some horrors claim to be the best of the year, so frightening blah blah blah, this doesn't advertise itself to be scary or jumpy bit does rely on a good dark tense atmosphere. There is plenty of decent gore and good visual make up used in this especially with right at the start. The acting does get a bit over the top at the start and half way through but then it does windle down. Certainly one I'd watch again and best viewed in the dark.

Hmm [emoji848]

I can imagine this being film being shown in a dark room in an art gallery. I’d walk into the room, watch for a couple of minutes, scratch my head and leave.

I’d read that Skinamarink was ‘experimental’, and I wish I could come up with another word to describe it, but I think ‘experimental’ is probably the only fit word. It basically feels like I’ve been watching static on tv for 100 minutes - you know that way when you stare at it for long enough you start to see things?

Life of Pi (2012)

A visually stunning film from animation company Rhythm & Hues Studios about a boy stranded on the ocean in a lifeboat with a tiger.

However there's a CGI fakeness about swathes of the film especially the ship sinking, whilst the story, what there was, lacked any sort of engagement with me and the feeling i had at the end was that i'd just watched Slumdog Titanic and it all came over as so worthy and anti-climactic and at two hours, mind numbingly long.

Hitchcock's brilliant Lifeboat (1944) this is not.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. 1993.

Biopic story of Lee Jun Fan who later to be known as Bruce Lee from leaving Hong Kong to America, working as a restraunt Dishwasher, opening his own martial arts school and film stardom that was tragically cut short. Jason Scott Lee (no relation) takes on the role that did have its rigourous training from being a dancer to learn how to fight. Lauren Holly plays Linda who Bruce went onto marry and her book is based on the film.

What also shows is the inner battle with Chinese superstitions in the form of a demon and racism from wannabe school bullies and those around him in the 60s although not played out to the extreme but can only imagine how tough it could have been. Two hours happily passed re-watchimg this.

Out Of The Dark (1988, Michael Schroeder)

Workers on a chatline find they are being stalked by one of their "customers".
Some fun here with the cameos and that (Bartel, Tab Hunter, DIVINE etc) and getting to see Tracey Walter play a central role was nice.
Decent enough set up. Recommended.

Final Cut (1998, Ray Burdis)

The Operation Good Guys return ahem. Centered around a funeral, a group of friends find no comfort with a request from the deceased. This could have been fun, but they seemed more interested in filming themselves being "naughty". Shame. Next!!

JUG FACE – A mysterious pit demands human sacrifice and Toby Jugs from the inhabitants of a small community in the woods. Don’t get me started on Toby Jugs. Why put a face on a jug? So it can sneer at you whilst you dribble your milk? In the film, getting your mug on a jug also means you end up bled out from the throat beside the aforementioned mysterious pit, so perhaps things could be worse for me and my little world. ‘Jug Face’, despite stylistics that seem plain, is an imaginative indie that plays in a consistent and convincing off-key. It features good performances from stalwarts such as Larry Fessenden and Sean Bridgers, not to mention sad-faced Lesley Carter, whose efforts to avoid jug-face motivate the film’s dramatics. Its weird, hobbled world feels real, and it’s well done, even the cheap fx-y bits. I’ve seen it before. I liked it then, and I like it now.

BLOOD QUANTUM – Salmon are returning from the dead – don’t laugh, the zombie apocalypse is around the corner (again). ‘Blood Quantum’ distinguishes itself by bringing in ideas about Native American oppression and ecology and welding them to the ‘Walking Dead’ type framework we’ve all had to get used to over the last ten or fifteen years. It’s ponderous in that moody, well-shot kind of way, and there’s reasonable gore to be had alongside questionable detours into animation that somehow culminate in a someone’s granddad going Rambo. Scores slightly up because of its themes and the doomy atmos, even if it’s more of the same.

A BANQUET – A young woman, taking a breather from a party gone bad, encounters a red moon in the woods and slides into… madness? Possession? One as a metaphor for the other? Something else? There’s obviously a lot in there about warped families and control dynamics, but it’s the first film I’ve seen that pushes the theme of eating disorders towards Lovecraft. Nothing’s very clear in the end, but it doesn’t have to be. I found ‘A Banquet’ absolutely mesmerising. Most of that had to do with the way it looks – austere, in the Euro art manner that has frosted up many genre movies over the last five years or so, and it’s done really well here, conjuring a slow-motion haze of alienation and abstraction. Again, soulless modern houses seem key, but so does witchy Leslie Ash. A winner.

Eight for Silver (2021)

Hugely enjoyable Gothic horror set in the late 1800's. Skillfully directed, written and filmed with some great performances by a cast of familiar faces.

It's all about the mood and atmosphere with spooky houses, fog bound woods, creepy scarecrows, oh and some very gruesome gore. It's refreshingly lacking in modern horror tropes and is more in line with 30's/40's Universal or Hammer horror especially in what it does with a classic monster.

Without giving too much away if you enjoyed films such as Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow or the Hughes bros From Hell then this might be up your street. It's so much up mine i'm looking at house prices.

It was originally titled and released at Sundance as Eight for Silver (It's correct British title) but was renamed as the less interesting The Cursed for it's US cinema release.

Think I'll take a shot at this now you've said all the above. I was initially interested, then put off by a load of quite 'meh' reviews. I'm easily swayed, even though I act all hard. At the end of the day though I'm more interested in atmosphere than anything else, so I'll gladly give it a chance.

Body of Evidence (1993)

Madonna plays Rebecca Carlson, a woman accused of killing a vulnerable man through wild sexual games when she found out she was in line for $8m from his will. Defence attorney Willem Dafoe vows to get her off (The charges... God you lot have dirty minds) but ends up in a dangerous affair with her. (Oh... maybe you don't).

Nowhere near as bad as the critics would suggest, Body of Evidence was just one of a whole wave of erotic thrillers riding on the coat tails of 1987's Fatal Attraction. However it's clearly gains it's inspiration from early Film Noir and 1981's Body Heat with it's atmospheric use of light and shade and waterfront locations.

Madonna, who was widely derided at the time for the film, (She was for everything she did that had anything to do with sex, be it her Sex book or her 1992 Erotica album) really isn't bad at all, i'd even suggest her performance is quite restrained. In fact the film as a whole is quite restrained. Certainly a couple of the sex scenes are famous or indeed infamous (Hello dripping wax and car bonnet) but they really don't seem in the least subversive in the 2020's. In fact during the trial scenes the courts are repeatedly cleared as 'wild' sex acts are spoken about except they really aren't that wild at all, normal you might say in the here and now.

The cast is quite impressive too. Along with Dafoe and Madonna there's strong support from Joe Mantegna (I'm sorry but i only hear Fat Tony whenever he speaks), Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, Jurgen Prochnow and Frank Langella, who together make the daft plot appear perfectly reasonable.

I've always loved the erotic thriller genre from the eighties and nineties.

Forget the obsession dvd companies have for Hong Kong and Asian cinema. Where's the Secret Games, Mirror Images and Night Eyes box sets?

Remember it being rather controversial when it came out at the Cinema and on Video Release. Guessing it was one of those sign of it's time kind of things.

Certainly it wouldn't garner much reaction if it would have been released this year. It's definitely a better film than it's given credit for, I think people were too scared to admit that it was actually good.

Have you seen the Kim Newman Documentary, of so how long is it and is it any good?

Shannon's an absolute star of the erotic thriller genre. Soft core royalty along with that other Shannon, Shannon Tweed.

Forgot to mention that there are some good extras on the new Body of Evidence Blu-ray from Final Cut. It's a well put together package.

2 out of the 3 are good, that interview with Madonna's biographer was a little bit annoying, but the one from the producer was really interesting, and Kim was Kim :D Good package.

I think the word you are looking for is shit instead of experimental!

Amazing Spiderman 1&2

Well these were both a lot better than I remember , Garfield was good in the role and was nice they went with Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane was nice to see one of my favourite spidey villains the lizard. It's just a shame we didn't get anymore movies because of Disney buying marvel , the third could of been interesting with the introducing of the sinister six. Will be interesting to see if the rumors turn out too be true and Garfield gets another crack at the whip or web in this case.
