I can't remember seeing anything untoward in the last half of the film on my desk, but might give it another watch just to be sure.

ANTHROPOPHAGOUS: THE BEAST - I know this one tends to divide viewers, with many finding it dull to the point of inertia, despite its reputation from yore. I can understand where the naysayers come from - I've dismissed it myself when I've seen it in a certain mood. BUT... under the 'right' circumstances, in the 'right' frame of mind... It may never be a gothic masterpiece, but there is something unusual and haunting about its desolate locations, its borderline trancey atmosphere (especially in the latter part of the movie)... even the Euro-travelogue during the interminable build-up seems a bit trippy IMO. The soundtrack has much to do with this. 'Anthro...'s' several moments of heightened bad taste only augment the above. I like this film. There's a genuine weirdness at work here, the kind of thing people look to when they try to define what seperates Euro-Horror from the usual dreck. A stange, slow sense of dread, an understanding of what is weird, a serious approach to horror.

CRUISING - Al Pacino is a cop who goes undercover in order to trap a killer stalking NY's gay nightlife. 'Cruising' attracted controversy on its release for an imputed homophobic portrayal of a specific turn of gay subculture. I reserve judgement - it's opportunistic and exploitative, but it gives complex signals in dealing with both the sexuality of its characters and of culture in general - crudely drawn roles in a couple of instances don't help its case. That said, it's a bleak and rivetting journey through the night of a cruel city, exactly the kind of film you'd hope to emerge from a three way collision between the terms 'Friedkin', 'Early eighties' and 'New York'. Whatever the final meaning, the neon drenched ecstasy of thrashing bodies at play signposts a departure from mainsream thriller territory.

On the Buses (1971) The first movie spin off from the late 60's British sitcom. Stan and Jack work for a London bus company that is hiring women drivers they are taking away any chance of overtime. In retaliation the two come up with different ploys to get rid of them. Short skirts, heaving bosoms, lecherous 'blokes' and 'birds'! Not very pc and a product of its time but good fun all the same!

.

Good review, totally agree. I have the 2-disc shriek show release and I really enjoy the film. I hated it the first time but came back and gave it second and third chances before catching it when I was in the right mood. Very little happens but it does manage to evoke a strange and haunted atmosphere thats hard to put into words...

Cockneys vs. Zombies (Blu) This was a lot more fun in the comfort of my own sitting room than I remember from the August screening at Fright Fest. Great fun.

Been cinema today to see The Hobbit in HFR 3D.

Now all the reviews are correct, it does look "cheap" and "too smooth" most of the time but the landscape scenes do look very nice!

On the movie itself, its good but not great. Now it may be I need to rewatch in 24fps as 48 was way too distracting first time around that I may enjoy it more. You can tell its based on a childrens book and I dont think its as good as LOTR.

Watched two Blu's in the lead up to Christmas:
'Southern Comfort' - One of my favourite films. I've seen it a few times on VHS, but only once on DVD. The BluRay looked really good, to my eyes. So, for me, a worthy upgrade.

'Zombie Flesh Eaters' - First time viewing, for me. Really didn't know what to expect, and I was pretty much blown away! A couple of things really surprised me - how strong on story it was, not that it was a challenging plot or anything, but it always felt like telling the story was the most important thing.
A couple of scenes were real stand outs, to me - the 'feasting' scene, the dead rising from the graveyard, and the lone zombie walking down the village road, with the crab scuttling across in front of him. Also loved the audio - drums beating in the background, the moaning of the zoms etc.
My only complaint: the picture was so good that it showed up the makeup limitations - rotting faces not matching their bodies, rotting corpses with normal hands etc. Not really a problem though, not for me anyway.
So glad I shelled out for the steelbook! Awesome release Arrow.

Default Killing Them Softly

Killing Them Softly
I was expecting some sort of Goodfellas, come Wiseguy knock about badaboom badabing Tarantino-esque swearathon, well there was plenty of swearing, but I was genuinely surprised that it wasn't the Usual Suspect meets Casino.
Brad Pitt has'nt really done anything this good since Seven/Fight Club, and my apprehension meter went into overdrive when I knew he was init.
But low and behold he does more than just be some moving talking eye candy,he manages to keep his usual gurning and smirks to the camera in check and instead gives us more believable quiet menace.Of course no crime film can be without Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini,I think its the law in the states that these two have to be in every film connected with organized crime.
Anybody who enjoyed Andrew Dominik's Chopper with its mixture of humor and sobering violence will not be disappointed.
It also has a great soundtrack and not the usual Sinatra/Dino of the usual mafia films but an eclectic mix featuring Heroin/The Velvet Underground,Windmills Of Your Mind/Petula Clark and The Man Comes Around/Johnny Cash to name a few.
Apparently based on Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins, which ive never read but judging by the film should be worth seeking out.
