Phantafestival launched on Thursday with Haunter and continued Friday with Across the River, both of which I skipped as I had seen before. I did take the opportunity to see The Rambler an attempt to make a Lynch film but with neither the wit nor intelligence of David Lynch's films. A real disappointment given the strength of the festivals first two films. But, just as I thought it couldn't get worse along came the Japanese offering Red Sword an attempt to make an Little Red Riding Hood into a bizarre softporn film featuring Werewolves raping a lot of 20-something pornstars dressed as Japanese school girls. It was dire and is a film to be avoided.

The festival continues tomorrow with The Congress (which I saw already), the world premiere of Cannibals and Love and Sharknado before concluding on Sunday with Evangelion 2. I will miss Sundays films as I will be travelling, but will try to catch Sharknado (Cannibals and Love is in German).

A couple of great new indie horror movies like Pieces of Talent and Lord of Tears.

Prisoners (2013) - Great crime thriller.

Killer Joe (2011) - Surprisingly, a very good McConaughey flick. Shocked at how much I enjoyed it.

Film of the year for me.

Venom

The next day after i found 'The house where evil dwells' disappointing i decided to watch 'Venom' which also featured Susan George.
I picked this up from a car boot sale a while back and hadn't got round to watching it, the reviews i read weren't particularly favourable but personally i found it quite enjoyable.
Directed by Piers Haggard who made 'Blood on satans claw' it basically involves a kidnapping plot of a rich kid staged by the family servants and a terrorist played by Klaus Kinski. Oliver reed is a Chauffer and George is a maid, both are nasty pieces of work.
The kid had mistakenly been given a Black mamba as a pet which conveniently escapes.
The kidnapping is further complicated by Reed who kills a policeman alerting the police to the situation, this results in a siege situation that is handled by Nicol Williamson (Excaliburs Merlin).
I didn't expect much but the combination of Reed and Kinski was entertaining and i found it quite compelling and tense. I put the film on late at night expecting to watch half and then go to sleep but got into it and ended up watching the entire film.
The kid also has a granddad who is involved in the siege and is acted totally over the top, this for me only added to the charm of the film. The snake is really only a minor part of the film but adds quite a bit of tension.
Anyway i've probably made this sound more impressive than it actually is but like i say i wasn't expecting much so was pleasantly surprised. 7/10

The absolutely brilliant Berberian Sound Studios for the first time on blu-ray (I saw it a couple of times at film festivals). Off out shortly for a bit of shopping (24hr shopping today), dinner and then on to Phantestival for Sharknado (which I also picked up on blu yesterday).

While trying to break the altitude record, a pilot takes his ship 250 miles out of the Earth's atmosphere. Bad idea !
He returns a monster and is out for blood to keep him alive.
The monster looks pretty good and the second half of the film reminded me of The Incredible Melting Man. Worth checking out if you like 50's Sci-Fi.

Jaws

For me spielbergs greatest film and one of my top ten films of all time. A nearly perfect film in ever way. Music, acting , direction it's all top notch and the restoration is amazing one of the best looking films I own on blu ray. A film i will never get bored of watching again and again. A true classic often imitated but never bettered. A masterpeice of cinema. 10/10

Silent night night deadly night

Never seen this before but enjoyed it, still don't know why people got so upset by it, some very good kills and a very strange and unsettling atmosphere. Shame the movie superior didn't get killed at the end, it was mostly her fault if she had treated the boy better like she did the children near the end he might of had a very good chance to be normal. 6.5/10

Next up time bandits I must of watched this a dozen times since I bought it, I love it don't know why I never get bored of watching it. If don't enjoy this film your already dead!

Dude you appear to have almost unlimited time and funding when it comes to movies. I am getting rather jealous.

I remember watching Time Bandits about ten years ago and being very disappointed with it. It has great actors and a good director, but just ended up pretty boring and unfunny to me.
