People under the stairs. Still an odd film. Made in the early 90's it's part social activism film, part slapstick comedy and a big chunk of perverted cannibal nastiness. Wendy Robie and Everett McGill team up again post twin peaks with characters that seem to be the evil mirror universe versions of Ed and Nadine Hurley. It's a socialist film about a greedy corrupt and degenerate family that is sucking all the life and money out of the community and hoarding it in the basement. More recently after bleeding people until their dry the mad couple have been abducting children looking for the perfect child and keeping the ones that don't make the grade under the stairs (hence the title). There are references to the first (and at that time ongoing) Iraq war with the kids under the stairs watching rolling news footage of Baghdad being bombed and the main character fool dropping a 'smart brick' down the chimney onto big ed's head. Craven had gone somewhat off the boil as a film maker, but I remember first seeing this one as part of Alex Cox's moviedrome on BBC2 and loving it. If anything its slightly better re-watching it now as there is lots of things going on in the film I never noticed the first time around. Arrows Blu-Ray looks Amazing as well. Christmas evil. For me not as good as Silent night deadly night but still an entertaining xmas movie. It's about a bloke who saw 'santa' going down on his mum on christmas eve and ends up becoming somewhat warped as an adult. He watches kids to make a list of naughty and nice and also likes to spy on his brother and wife having sex. Eventually he cracks and goes out to punish the naughty. Rather trashy with a very surreal ending the film is a little uneven but I liked it. Not seen much else recently. Friday-monday was straight 10 hour shifts at Asda doing 12-10 followed by a 10-10 on xmas eve. Hopefully now its all done I can try and get some stuff watched. |

Just finished watching Only God Forives. This may be one of the worst films I've seen in quite a while. You can tell it's trying to be "arty" with its lighting and it's as slow as death. I like a good surreal film, this wasn't good though. Very disappointing. 3/10

Today's film was Neil Jordan's Byzantium. I saw this for the first time back in February at Fright Fest Glasgow (with a brilliant cast and crew Q&A). But a second viewing has impressed me much more. This is a wonderful melancholic film. Superb!

Zombie holocaust Not as good as either zombie flesh eaters or cannibal holocaust(which it seems a rip off, of both) but it has a certain charm of its own and the shriek show blu is the best it's ever looked and the best it probably ever will. 7.5/10 Twins of evil One of if not hammers darkest films, fantastically atmospheric with top notch acting especially from Peter Cushing ( as usual). We also have David warbeck of the beyond .Another one of hammers finiest. 10/10 |

Yeah, my brother loved it. I found it too pretentious and slow moving. By the end of it, I didn't understand a single thing about it!!! I'll probably give it another go sometime in the future, perhaps it'll grow on me.

I have to admit, I'm a big fan of Refn's work and Only God Forgives continues his winning streak for me. Saying that, it's not quite up there for me with either Bronson or Drive. But as a broad, unabashedly gaudy, trippy and brutally violent mixture of Gaspar Noe and Alejandro Jodorowsky I dug it immensely. Divisive for sure, then again Refn's films seem to always be that. What can I say, one of my favourites of this year.
