Under the Skin - A good film you have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it though, dont go expecting action or anything, this is a slow, haunting and deliberate film, not a lot of talking apart from the pick up scenes, lots of great scenery, its the type of film where the viewer is left to fill in their own blanks, loved the creepy music too.

Last night we watched Captain Phillips.
Paul Greengrass dramatisation of the attack on a US cargo ship by Somali pirates in 2009.
Started off a little dull, suffering a little from the inevitable lack of glitz inherent to this type of film. But once Hanks and his crew are out to see and the pirated begin to close in the tension starts to ramp up and by the end of the film the wife and I were both a little emotional. Captain Phillips breakdown on the US Warship at the end is heartbreaking.

Followed by something light and silly

R.I.P.D
Men In Black clone with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges (on oscar worthy form ) as members of a secret police force protecting earth from the dead bad guys who've managed to evade the afterlife. Great fun.

Island of Death director Nico Mastorakis clearly had a blast with this film. The script writing stage must have been a hoot for this sci-fi, horror, western, action movie. It really is everything you could wish for in a B-movie, Christ there's even a helicopter dogfight in Monument Valley.

Mastorakis got himself a fine 80's cast of George Kennedy, Bo Hopkins, Wings Hauser and Brion James for this tale about strange science types who poison a small desert town's water supply turning the residents into raving lunatics. Going into the stories finer details would spoil it for those like me who had never seen the film before. It was wonderful watching each plot development, even more jaw dropping than the last.

It's not entirely perfect, there seems to be some poor editing early doors, characters unexplained movements and so forth, such as why was George Kennedy unconscious at one point? however whilst being a niggle at the time they are soon forgotten about in this seriously fun escapade.

The budget dvd from Hollywood Entertainment has a very nice 16:9 widescreen picture with good sound quality.

Highly recommended.

SOLD!!

Watched Audience Of One(2007, Mike Jacobs).
A sort of anti Jesus Camp...in that both feature deluded xtians, but whereas you just want to kill the JC bunch, this lot are just goofy. Pentecostal pastor get revelation from "Gawd" that he has to make the "Xtian Star Wars". A laugh riot ensues imo. Funnily enough I found parallels with Jodorowsky's Dune, as he also wanted to make a "spritual" film, but since AJ wasn't a first timer etc etc. Recommended to those who like to laugh at blind faith, or if you just like to laugh at americans

The Loved Ones (2009)

It's Prom Night... Quirky Australian style. When a young man turns down a girls request to be her prom date, little does he know his prom night will become a terrifying ordeal.

Starting out like any high school movie The Loved Ones takes a brilliant turn when the lad is kidnapped by the girls father and ends up tied to a chair at their out of the way home. Part Texas Chainsaw Massacre, part surreal nightmare. After the first twenty minutes the story goes twist after turn. Outrageously violent at times, bordering on sadism, although the films occassionally tongue in cheek approach during the first half waters it down a little, the second half is as viscious as any i've seen in recent memory with some genuinely wince inducing scenes.

Where the film really works is in it's subplot of a "normal" prom date between two loners which is both sad and emotional but not for the reasons you'd think. This sideways step seems like melancholic padding at first, but as the strands to the narrative unravel, the two tales become one. The film works well as a character driven story and is beautifully acted, otherwise it would fail to convince, but convince it does, leaving us with a gory pastiche of teen horror.

Highly recommended.

If this is the film that was broadcast on 'The Horror Channel', I have recorded it

The way things are going, I might get to see it in 2017!

I saw this several years ago and, like you, thought it was really good due to the involving story and decent performances. I should really dig out my DVD and give it another watch.
