STAGEFRIGHT. Many moons ago as a teenager, I was rooting through cardboard boxes at a local car boot. The purpose was to find dodgy looking horror, soft porn, pretty much anything that might provide a sundays worth of mindless sex and violence. A soon to be friend of mine had a stall and sold me this on Avatar VHS. At this point I wasn't especially up to speed on italian cinema so I bought it home and settled down to what I was expecting to be a run of the mill slasher film. I was surprised to discover a film that far surpassed that. Stagefright had a style and intesity that pretty much outstipped any of the run of the mill slashers i'd seen up until that point. Sure, it followed a relatively run of the mill escaped psycho plot but director Michele Soavi really did something with the material. Stagefright is a masterclass of low budget filmmaking. It takes its limitiations and makes the most of them. No money? One location, small cast and some talent and no problem! Soavi takes inspiration from both his time as Dario Argentos assistant and his love of films like Texas chainsaw massacre and the works of Hiotchcock and weaves an intense and on occasion, dreamlike tale of a group of actors locked in a theater being hunted by a demented actor out to create his own theatre of cruelty. Exposure cinema have set out to make a name for themselves releasing cult italian cinema on blu-ray. A tricky propostion when you consider the difficulties involved in sourcing decent material. With this release they have really delivered a great looking and sounding transfer. Only two gripes. One is that there is no option for 4:3 unmatted with picture at top and bottom, while this is not the theatrical framing, a lot of fans remember this from VHS days and this option might have been nice. Second, I had a problem running the feturette with the compariosn between cut/uncut and the barbara cupisti interview but i'm waiting to see if anyone else has an issue as theres a possibility it might be my player. |

Some quick one-line reviews from Fantasy Film Fest in Hamburg which I have joined half way through its 12 day run. Patema Inverted I am not a fan of anime, but this was a charming story of gravity gone wrong. La Garde (The Custody) Great performances from the two leads lift this film about an estranged father and son who have to survive the Canadian wilderness. Jamie Marks is Dead A haunting coming of age story (you'll have to see the film to understand what I did there) in which Adam must come to terms with love, death and disability. What We Do In the Shadows a fantastic funny documentary film about alternate lifestyles in Wellington, New Zealand. Recommended. I skipped the two films I have seen before Cold in July, excellent film but I needed to check in to my hotel and grab a bite to eat, and Wolfcop. Wolfcop gets a repeat lunchtime screening later in the festival and so I will give it a second chance to impress (I wasn't entirely convinced first time round). 6 more days to go. |

Maniac Cop (1988) First time seeing it and was quite surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. It has a real 80's VHS vibe to it complete with its 80's score. Its one of those pictures that I never got around seeing saw it on my shelf whilst looking for something possibly sleezy and thought why not! Glad I did.

hi guys, recently watched "death ship" AND "dard divorce"! DEATH SHIP; although i had not seen this since the mid 80s,i found it to be a bit slow and badly acted. however,i also found it very enjoyable and 1 that i WILL revisit. glad i made the purchase, and think i will purchase more from the 80s that i cant remember fully {i can always remember the likes of ted,f13,burning,etc,etc}. DARD DIVORCE: very strange film i thought.it was like there were 3 films in 1!i found it a bit difficult to follow at times, but at the end i thouroughly enjoyed it. it has some great horror and nastiness, and 1 that im glad i veiwed on my own. overall a great film. |

Testament Live - The Dark Roots Of Thrash Blu; An absolutely brilliant performance from one of my favourite metal bands. Picture quality was great while the PCM Stereo option was simply outstanding. Great songs matched with stellar musicianship. Lead singer, Chuck Billy, is so funny. Anytime Alex Skolnick or Eric Peterson take a guitar solo, Billy starts replicating their actions via his microphone stand. Hilarious. Gene Hoglan (Drums) and Greg Christian (Bass) are a wonderfully tight rhythm section. I don't listen to heavy metal as much as I used to, but every now and again a CD or a live DVD/BLU will just blow me away and this is most definitely one such release. Loved every minute of this live Blu-ray |
