Watched The Mummy (Karl Freund, 1932) and Creature From The Black Lagoon (1953, Jack Arnold). TM terrified me as a child, sadly can't say that this is the case anymore, but still, a great understated performance by Karloff at the centre of any film will keep me happy. CFTBL was also another childhood terror, but I now see that it's a love story. I've had The Creature Walks Among Us in the house for a while, now all I need is Revenge and I can watch them in order. Am not really what you'ld call a completist (burn the heretic etc etc ), but I makes an effort once in while.

Not that I'm expecting these to be anything like Oasis of Fear, but they're just more obscure to me, not something I'd usually go out and buy. |

Great film, probably the only Shameless title I've watched more than a couple of times

I skipped the earlier showings of White Bird in a Blizzard and Babadook, both of which I had seen before and both of which are excellent, and so a disappointing Sunday at Fantasy Film Fest began with the Vicious brothers new film Extraterrestrial, as they are the only festival guests during may time at the festival I was hoping for something a bot special, instead we go a mess of a film that has many (many) references to many (many) much better films. But the film is all over the place and doesn't really have a strong enough spine to bring all of the disparate threads together into a single strong narrative. I think the films problems were partially explained in the Q&A afterwards - this was the first script the 'brothers' had written together and was done so under the influence of a large amount of weed. The evening continued with Wer a (mostly) English language werewolf film set in France. A lawyer calls in her animal behaviour specialist ex-boyfriend to help her defend a client who stands accused by the French authorities of the brutal slaying of a young family on a camping trip. Its a competent enough film but it lacks any hint of originality and rather than being the tense thriller the makers intended, plods along as a slow paced police procedural. and then finally the midnight screening was Inumber, number a very fine south African crime thriller. This really was edge of your seat stuff and I had no difficulty remaining awake until its dramatic and bloody conclusion. My favourite film of the fest until then. This morning I was up bright and early (11 a.m.) ready to see the repeat showing of the opening film The Rover. This Australian film is set 10 years after the collapse and stars Guy Pearce. Like many people who were children of the 80's Guy is best remembered (or best forgotten) as Mike from Neighbours and so it is always surprising to be reminded about what a good actor he has become. He is great here as an enigmatic and angry man who pursues three criminals across a post-apocalptic landscape after they steal his car. This is a quiet film punctuated by seemingly random acts of senseless violence and I found it excellent. Highly recommended and my new favourite film of the festival. The weather in Hamburg is excellent so I have skipped Patchtown and The Killers (again two excellent films) to take in a few rays and also look for new television set. Next up at the festival is Blue Ruin (the blu-ray of which I received early last week). Last edited by SShaw; 15th September 2014 at 03:44 PM. |

Gutterballs well what can I say a film that lives up to it title .. It belongs in the gutter and is a load of balls... Definaitly a throw back to bad 80s movies. Everything about it is bad. Bad acting . Bad storyline after all being raped like that you wouldn't beable to turn up next day. Bad dialogue probably as much swearing as dialogue itself. In reality type of film that just offers nothing but offensivness (if there such a word ) and shock value. I mean how many films offer death by a 69. But then again all this doesnt probably stop it becoming a fav film amongst fans of this type of film after all look how much I spit on youre grave has become a cult film. But at same time i enjoyed it in a naff sense of way .. Wonder if Butterballs 2 going to be as offensive ? |
