DARK TOURIST. Wonderfully bleak look at damaged people, rage and murder in a slow burn of a film that uses it's tale of serial killer fandom to tell a very dark story of a man mentally falling apart. Savage and brutal in places, fragile and gentle in others, this is a must for those who enjoy looking into the abyss. Michael Cudlitz is both imposing and vulnerable in the lead role whilst Melanie Griffith is fantastic in a supporting role, utterly convincing in her tragedy. Highly recommended.

Dark Shadows (2012)

Imprisoned for 200 years, vampire Barnabas Collins is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection and help with getting the local fish canning business back from the vampish Angelique Bouchard, somebody all to familiar to Barnabas.

Despite one or two flaws with characterization and perhaps the lack of it, Dark Shadows is a fascinating film full of lovely Gothic visuals in true Tim Burton style, featuring a killer cast and enough dark humour and bloody effects to make the hundred and odd minutes fly by.

I quite enjoyed it as well Dem, it's no masterpiece and a bit slapdash, bunging in stuff all over the place, but is perfectly entertaining and doesn't outstay it's welcome.
I've seen some of the old episodes and quite enjoyed what i saw, from what i've read about the old series is that over it's years of airing it had just about everything, vampires, ghosts etc.
It seems Burton and Depp are fans and just wanted to capture some of the essence of the DS experience, a more sedate simple story wouldn't have reflected the true nature of the show.

It's been a little while but i thoroughly enjoyed it. But then i like most of Tim Burtons films. Including his Planet of the Apes redo.

I really liked it. Bit silly, especially the last act, but I really enjoyed, especially the whole style and imagery.

I also enjoyed Dark Shadows. Burton gets a lot of flack for some of his more recent offerings but I think Dark Shadows stands apart and whilst no masterpiece, is still a thoroughly enjoyable film with some interesting creative flourishes.

The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951. Great sci fi movie from director Robert Wise. First time seeing it, I'm ashamed to admit, but better late than never. Great cast and storytelling of the highest order. Looked mighty fine in HD.
