The island of Dr Moreau

Not as good as I thought it would be all a little slow paced 5/10

The abominable Dr Phibes

A classic with some great imaginative kills, black comedy and price on great form even though we hardly hear his distinctive voice. 8.5/10

Lifeforce

A personally favourite never going to be considered a classic but that doesn't stop it being a lot of fun. 9/10

Rabid

First time viewing of this Cronenberg movie. Really enjoyed this and can see how this was the prototype for a lot of his later work, nice transfer with some great looking extras.9/10

Bogey man

First time I watched this a few months ago wasn't to impressed but this time I really enjoyed it. A great job has been done by 88 films on this movie and can't see it looking any better. 7/10

Slaughterhouse

Went into this with very low expectations but ended up enjoy it for what it was a poor mans Texas chainsaw masscure wannabe. Found the opening titles with the music (that would not be out of place in a carry on movie)and the pigs being slaughtered a little unnerving. 6.5/10

Incredible melting

To be honest it's a little slow and not much happens, but it's enjoyable enough thanks to Rick bakers special effects . 7/10

Planet of the apes

A classic and the blu Ray looks really nice, also seems to have a load of extras that I can't remember being on the old boxset I had. 10/10

Esacape to witch mountain ( original)

Years since I have seen this. Enjoyable Sunday afternoon viewing. 7.5/10

The haunted palace

An adaptation of lovecrafts the case of charles Dexter ward. Very atmospheric and creepy with great turns from price, Chaney and the rest of the cast. Shame corman didn't do more lovecraft. Will have to read the story again to see how accurate it is.9.5/10

Noticed a film called the Virgin witch on Netflix which sounds intresting, is it worth a watch?

'71 (2014)

A raw recruit on his first mission in Belfast, 1971, is accidentally left behind after a skirmish in the streets. Lost and seemingly abandoned he must somehow live long enough to get back to his barracks. A task made more difficult when he can never tell who is friend of foe.

A gripping and at times incredibly tense experience, particularly the opening half hour. 71 is a film that could never have been made perhaps even fifteen years ago such are it's political tendencies.

However at it's heart is a classic tale of a stranger in a strange land and the basics of a battle for survival. Extremely gritty and at times brutal, the action sequences are white knuckle thrilling but never over the top so as to be unbelievable.

Jack O' Connell, who i'd seen for the first time in the previous night's viewing of Tower Block is excellent as the lost and frightened rookie, a role miles away from the thuggish Kurtis in the aforementioned sniper thriller. His performance of vulnerability and finally strength powers the film along making the viewer really care as to his fate. A lesser performance would have seen the film fall on it's knees at the first hurdle and most likely disappear into obscurity.

That isn't the case though. 71 is a fantastic film and i heartily recommend it.

Incidentally it was filmed just 15 minutes down the M65 from me. Blackburn doubling for the Belfast locations.

Is that the Charles Laughton version? That film is one of my very faves myself but I can see why some may see it as quite slow.

Can't wait to check out the doc on Richard Stanley's catastrophic involvement in the awful 90's version.

I watched it a couple of nights ago for the second time (I saw it at the cinema) and it was as impressive at home as it was on the big screen. Jack O'Connell thoroughly deserved the best newcomer BAFTA for his roles in this, Tower Block and Starred Up.

Belfast looks like an extremely complicated and terrifying place for both the outsider and those caught in the crossfire.

It's no wonder someone I know who was in the Army says Northern Ireland was the worst place he ever was posted and still tenses up when he hears a Northern Irish accent.

Paddington (2014)

I'm not the biggest fan of this type of thing but something about it from the moment it hit cinemas made me want to see it.

A terrific movie with several laugh out loud moments. Really enjoyed it. Great fun for all the family as it manages to hit all the right bases to give both adults and kids ninety minutes entertainment.

Recommended.
