Martin (1977)
John Amplas plays Martin in this portrait of an 18 year old vampire.
Written and directed by zombie king George A Romero, this, along with Season of the Witch (1972) proves to be Romero's most thoughtful work as he demythologizes (Is that a real word or have i just made it up?) the classic vampire legend. How? Well Martin believes he's a descendant of Nosferatu but nowhere to be seen are the classic vampire fangs, instead Martin uses a razor to slash his victims wrists which makes the film far more sinister than the majority of vampire films. Gone also are the vampires fear of Christian symbols, garlic, running water or any of the threats that terrified Christopher and Bela.
I don't hold this in quite the same regard as some Cult Labs members, however the film has two outstanding sequences. The sickening assault on a woman in her train carriage and the house break in.
One that improves the more i watch it. Just like Season of the Witch in fact.
