Watched My Dear Killer. Can't say it's gone to the top of my fave shameless titles and certainly not near the top of my fave gialli's. Finger hovered over the FF button a few times. Couple of nice scenes and the soundtrack was cool but a bit boring for the most part.

Guest House Paradiso - 1999 UK d: Adrian Edmondson

One of the funniest comedy films ever made so far I am concerned. Nowt else to say. Always makes me laugh.

Visiting Hours - 1982 Canada d: Jean Claude Lord

Excellent slasher pic - one of the very best. And by far one of the finest films on That List. Great cast, fine script, very well filmed. Nice to see a DVD in the correct ratio after growing up with a 4:3 dub of a worn VHS. Splendid.

keirarts 25th June 2012 10:43 PM

Was going to stick to asian cinema only tonight after yamada, but going through 'to watch mountain' I discovered PROTEUS, a monster on the loose aboard an oil rig movie (one of the first I think) directed by FX maestro Bob keen. Hadn't seen this since the old vhs days so decided to stick it on. Actually felt more like the old vhs days by virtue the dvd looks like a shoddy VHS rip! :mmph: Still, managed to get through it, and actually think it holds up pretty well. It's a little flat and very cheesy, but also a great deal of fun and still better than a lot of the creature loose on oil rig films that preceded it. Nice cameo from Doug Bradley as well!

After that I stuck on CORPSE MANIA. A shaw brothers giallo with plenty of gore and some necrophillia thrown in as well! Fairly sleazy and icky its got some great set design and is quite a bit of fun with a nice twist near the end.

Then finally....

KILLER SNAKES!

Another Shaw brothers one, with this think Street trash/Combat shock meets Stanley. A sexually inadequate street kid who lives in a dirty shack in Hong kong has a pretty rotten life. He's frequently abused and robbed and the one girl who shows any interest in him ends up forced into prostitution, on top of that he's pretty traumatised after growing up forced to hear his parents loud sado-masochistic sex sessions. Left to brood alone in his shack with a collection of violent pornography, one day he finds an injured snake that he nurses back to health soon the snake and a bunch of it's chums help our wayward street urchin extract some revenge, with plenty of murder-by-snake, and one unpleasant sexual assault with snake.

Killer snakes is a grimy, sleazy horror that keeps the action primarily at street level amongst Hong kongs underclass and is a pretty unpleasant little movie. That said its also pretty good for those who can stomach it and certainly not as bat-shit mental as calamity of snakes.

A sacred sub-genre.

I have Killer Snakes lined up for imminent viewing too! I may bump it up a place or two after that report! :)

There's some pretty nasty snake cruelty in it as well, but not nearly as much as calamity of snakes which borderd on genocide on several occasions.

Hugo - 2011 USA d:Martin Scorsese

An exquisite and emotional joy to watch. A film whose pleasures must ring loud and true in the heart of anyone who loves film and cares about the history of film.

I knew little about it. To discover it was a partial (fictionalised) biopic of the amazing Georges Méliès was a shock and delight.

My only issue was with the blue & orange colour scheme which was overdone and a little nausea inducing. It was so well shot otherwise. I can't help but wonder if black & white might have improved things - the colour tinted Méliès clips would really have hit home then.

Wonderful.

Baseball Fury 26th June 2012 06:24 AM

Saw Red Lights last night, and I thought it was pretty good! De Niro was on form, ,certainly better than anything he's phoned in in recent times.

Yeah, there is. It was the main reason why I'd put off watching it for so long.

I really like Corpse Mania, keirarts: a nice spin on the giallo formula.

I liked the set design, the spooky fog shrouded streets made me think we were up for a Jack the ripper movie. Its a really great looking movie!

I'd still reccomend Killer snakes, theirs only two scenes of genuine cruelty in the movie and in all fairness the snakes certainly get their revenge!

That's an interesting point, but I felt the lush colour scheme added to the almost fairytale aspect of the film and heightened the adventure side of the story.

When I saw it at the cinema, I hadn't seen A Trip to the Moon, but bought the BD as soon as it was available to pre-order and have seen it about three times now, with the hand-painted colours looking remarkably good and effective.

I now want to find and watch this Corpse Mania flick.

Wizard of Gore (2007)......Not much to say but : Greetings and Salutations:)

Streamed "The Burning" (1981) through lovefilm Sunday night. A pretty decent slasher but I do love a bit of camp horror  although nothing beats Sleepaway Camp for that.

Capturing The Friedmans

Just watched this online. Wow pretty messed up.

I'm partial to Rituals, myself ;)

Demdike@Cult Labs 26th June 2012 10:04 PM

Watched the mess that is Wes Craven's My Soul To Take.

There is so much wrong with it and very little right.

Terrible acting which isn't helped by the poor script and awful characterisation. The only decent thing was the occasional gory scene. But this is one poor film.

I think Craven needs to see that film Scream he could learn something from it.

Demoncrat 27th June 2012 11:21 AM

Attack Of The Herbals (David Ryan Keith)
A cheeky wee tale of capitalism gone mad, as local misfits try to save their picturesque village from the grasping hands of a property developer....by selling something they find floating at the shore cough cough.;)
This is not a Ken Loach film btw!!
With nods to Braindead, Evil Dead and a few others inbetween, this is a great wee effort to be taken in the spirit twas intended.....

James Morton 27th June 2012 01:38 PM

an excellent psychological horror film on the Horror Channel called
THE DARKROOM
tbh I had never heard of this film before but glad I recorded it because its a very underrated low budget American horror :)

Will have to look out for that, the Horror Channel has some great stuff on, I just wish they had a HD channel.

Slippery Jack 27th June 2012 06:33 PM

What films have you seen recently?

The Pact

Not a bad little horror. A few scares and more than a few surprises. Not great but better than a lot I've seen recently.

keirarts 27th June 2012 10:52 PM

Tonight.

MURDER PARTY. Weird little low budgeter with some great black humour and some nasty death scenes. An awful lot of fun.

Blood river. Another surprise, very well shot desert set horror with all but three characters in the entire movie and still entertaining.

LIGHTBLAST. The plot is stupid but who cares? Not me that's for sure. Wall to wall car chases, gunfights, lots of people on fire and eric estrada. It dosen't get any better than that. Unfortunatley not my disc though, one of my jammy sod friends managed to snag one dirt cheap.

Conspirators Of Pleasure/Spiklenci slasti - 1996 Czech Republic/Switzerland/UK d: Jan Svankmajer

Upon catching up with this third feature film from Jan Svankmajer I am yet more convinced that he is the world's greatest living film-maker.

The themes explored here are familiar ones from Svankmajer's work, but nonetheless there is no sense of repetition. The whole affair is a delight from beginning to end with never a duff note. Ostensibly a erotic comedy, it is very funny indeed, but - as you might expect - there are darker tones here too, particularly towards the end.

So, climb into your wardrobe of desire, let the textures take over your senses and don't forget to feed the fish.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 28th June 2012 10:06 AM

I've been to the cinema twice this week to see Chernobyl Diaries and Rad Lights, both of which could have been better, but made the time pass very quickly and were well made.

Oren Peli's film (okay, he didn't direct, but produce, wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay) is as close to a found footage film as you'll get without it being found footage. It says something about him that the most effective sequence, albeit a short one, is actually found footage and the cast of, Nathan Phillips from Wolf Creek aside, unknowns, impress and the location shooting in Serbia is outstanding.

If you've seen The Prestige and/or The Illusionist, the ending of Red Lights won't, in all likelihood, catch you off guard, but it's very well acted – even by De Niro in a supporting role – and will stand up to another viewing.

PaulD 28th June 2012 11:17 AM

Watched Tromeo and Juliet last night at Newcastle's grossly under-rated Star and Shadow cinema, as part of their Alternative Shakespeare season. I'm a big Troma fan so had seen the film before (it was actually my bluray the cinema were projecting meaning I got in for free with a +1. Rock and roll!*) but it was such an enjoyable experience seeing it on the big screen with a group of people all laughing and wincing in unison.

*the bluray I'd actually purchased from Pete last year, so thanks Pete!

Scyther 28th June 2012 03:57 PM

Watched Lady Terminator and Bianchi's La Moglie di mio padre aka My Father's Wifelast night. Over the top Indonesian ridiculousness for the former and sleazy melodrama on the latter. :)

Slippery Jack 28th June 2012 04:01 PM

Dust Devil

Well it had some amazing imagery (loved the sand flooded cinema!), but it was all a bit plodding, and the raft of stilted performances I found pretty painful. I remember I wasn't keen on Hardware either, don't think Richard Stanley (who I always confuse with Philip Ridley) is my cuppa tea . . .

Hamicus 28th June 2012 04:34 PM

I tried watching the Wizard Of Gore remake but failed. It was just too bad !

Susan Foreman 28th June 2012 06:07 PM

I watch 'Revenge of the Cheerleaders' this morning

Does anyone know why the target audience for this film is? I mean, the copious amount of nudity (male and female, including The Hoff's willy) suggests it's aimed as adults, but the comedy is so childish and immature, a child would find it unfunny
