Beyond the Gates (2016) I like the concept, I like the retro nostalgic feel, I like the characters, the performances are strong all around, and the SFX work is great with some awesome gore. But the execution of the concept is lacklustre; the film failed to reach the potential it had to be something genuinely smart and something genuinely scary. Disappointing but worth a watch. **1/2 out of *****

Creatures the World Forgot (1971) AKA Creatures the film forgot. Set in a simpler time when men were hairy, women were Julie Ege and dialogue was non-existent. Basically indistinguishable from Hammer's other prehistoric romps One Million Years BC and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth except for a final twenty minutes that riffs heavily from James Fenimore Cooper's epic novel The Last of the Mohicans. |

I watched my first Ghost Story last night which was, probably unsurprisingly Whistle and I'll Come to You (1968) as it's the first one on the first disc! Having never read the story, it wasn't what I was expecting. It was however pretty scary, really well acted and superbly directed. I've never before seen a film with so much mumbling in it I was going to watch the 2010 version with John Hurt this evening, but I have now decided that I'll bookend the set with the newer version and watch one of the other stories first. I also watched the Ramsey Campbell segment where he was reading his short story The Guide mainly because he's a local Wirral lad and I wanted to hear the accent and while the story was pretty good, it made me think that if this is an ode to MR James then Lovecraft must have stolen a lot of his ideas from James as I found it quite Lovecraftian. It would have been much better if they recorded the segment inside Campbell's house rather than in his conservatory as the sound was quite off putting.

Only just got up after getting in at 3:30am after the midnight show... Thought this was great. There are a couple of things which Jarred me a bit but overall a very enjoyable film. Lots of nods to the original trilogy and some surprise appearances. Seeing the film again tomorrow which is good. I feel I can relax better as I know what's coming now. |
