The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Miss Osborne. Walerian Borowczyk. 1981.

Back of the box has a quote from the financial times -
Potent and poetic, mischievous and macabre, Borowczyk s film shows how many imaginative worlds the horror movie can open up when the right artist holds the keys.
Well the 'artist' in this instance is Polish born director Walerian Borowczyk. And personally when he knocked this film together I don't think it were keys he was holding, I suspect it were his nob in the editing room to be honest.
Frankly this takes Robert Louis Stevensons famous story and turns it into a dodgy soft porno. Dodgy in the sense it's not even good porno, about as erotic as a bucket of mustard.
Why the bloody hell does Mr.Hyde have a bright bright red cock? The penis equivalent of a baboons arse. Performances across the board are hammy as hell and I can't really come up with much to recommend this film. The opening sequence is admittedly excellent as Hyde chases a little girl through the streets of London. Dazzling and disorientating as the chase seems to simultaneously take place indoors and outdoors. One scene in particular as the girl runs up a flight of steps from Hyde only for him to suddenly run down the steps from the top impressed me and from this opening sequence I actually expected big things of the film as it clearly demonstrated that Borowczyk had a talent. Unfortunately despite the striking atmosphere maintained throughout, the film falls flat on its face by the ten minute mark and never ever recovers. Poor.

Everyone seems to like this...except you. I have it to watch soon so will give my verdict. I'm really unsure as to what to expect.

Way too good a film to be this forgotten.

Jonathan Rigby didn't seem keen on it in Euro Gothic.

I'll try and post some of what he has to say later. He doesn't outright tear it apart but it doesn't come across particularly praiseworthy.

I enjoyed Jekyll and miss Osbourne,i thought it was a lot better than i expected, but then i'm a sucker for hammy acting and soft porn.
Udo Kier certainly has a talent for dodgy acting, i absaolutely love Blood for Dracula because of his performance.

It only gets 6.3 on IMDB so it isn't universally loved. Not that you can trust IMDB but i still imagined it would be higher.

Especially when you consider The Babadook gets 6.8.

Watched Paul Hyam's Outland (1981) with Connery tonight, surprised how much I enjoyed it, never seen get much praise, might have to pick it up on Blu.

Anyone else seen it, gets a solid 8/10 from me.

Might have to agree Rigby on this film but certainly don't agree with his views on The Psychic (1977).
