The BFG. Steven Spielberg. 2016. Spielberg takes on Roald Dahl. And by and large succeeds. I imagine most will know the story, but basically one night a young girl in an orphanage happens to see a giant out strolling about Old London Town. Said giant takes the somewhat dubious measure of reaching in through the bedroom window and basically kidnapping the child and taking her back to 'Giant Country'. It's ok though because it turns out that this particular giant is a friendly fella. Unfortunately his neighbours aren't quite so friendly and are rather keen on eating children, human 'beans' as they call them. Like most things written by Roald Dahl the BFG has a dark streak running through it, though of the stories I've read this one has a little more heart. Mark Rylance is fantastic as BFG and Ruby Barrhill doesn't irritate as the orphan girl Sophie. |

The Decline of Western Civilization: Part 3 (1998) I wasn't really prepared for how devastatingly sad this film is. Filmed during 1996-97 it was intended to be a follow up to the original Decline following bands of the current Punk iteration. However, Spheeris ended up finding that it was the fans which had the interesting story. She found a group of punks who live on the street, mostly because of abuse at home, and it was their story which she found the film was taking. Gutterpunks or Squatterpunks, and while it had the potential to be depressing it was actually wasn't. There was a pretty unbearably sad part towards the end though. Highly recommended but not at all festive.

Rogue One. Fantastic stuff, now has to be my second favorite star wars movie behind the empire strikes back. A lot darker in tone than the other movies and like others have mentioned the rebels are fractured and are not below doing dirty deeds to get things done which is a lot more realistic for a group like the rebels than how they are in the orginials. The characters were great and you cared about them something that still can't be said about the prequels, with Donnie yens character and the driod being my favourites, and we finally get to see why everyone was so scared of Vader and what a bad ass he is. Now let's talk about Cushing, I give them an A for effort as at times it looks brillant but most of the time he looks like some weird wax work but the biggest problem for me was his voice which just seemed off. |
