Last bought, On the Road Again, The Devil wears Prada and got the missus The Omen 4 disc boxset for 7 quid in HMV sale .
Was tempted by the Alien 9 disc boxset for ?10 in HMV sale. Can anyone recommend this.?
My next purches will be the La Vein Rose tin box edition ?25 and a cdr of Sex and the City.( I'll buy this when it comes out offically )
I also need to start picking up some more BluRays but the store selection is pretty poor at the moment.

The Alien Quadrilogy is an essential purchase at that price.I paid about 56.00 when the set first came out:mad:.I love all the Alien films & I prefer Alien 3 in the longer cut in the set. Some nice extras too.I have the newer Omen set too after upgrading from the first boxset. The original film is one of my very favourites.BTW it's a six disc set not four as the first film has an extra disc & the remake which is watchable is included.

Matt 8th July 2008 12:20 PM

Yesterday I picked up There Will Be Blood and Frontiers.

There Will Be Blood is superb. Highly recommended. Everything about the film is great (I love the ending so much... 'I drink your milkshake' has become one of my favourite sayings)

Frontiers is a recent French horror movie. It's very 'homagey', which is either good or bad depending on your taste. The violence is strong and there's blood to spare. Probably worth a rent if you're not sure. People seem to be split into two camps over whether they love or hate it. I can understand why some people didn't get on with the movie, but I really dug it.

Yer right Mark, it is 6.
I'll get that Alien box set as my vhs of A3 is Russian language with foreign subs , not really of much use . A mate brought me it back years ago said it was longer than the UK version .

I enjoyed Frontiers as well Matt.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 8th July 2008 05:36 PM

KILLER'S MOON is a MUST folks;)

bedorca 8th July 2008 08:38 PM

Just picked up Vipco's (the label not the forum member!!) Zombie Nosh

What a great movie :woot:

Sam@Cult Labs 8th July 2008 09:06 PM

Relating to the recent post about getting Alien and Omen box sets for pennies in HMV sale.

the biggest bargain you can pick up there is the Planet of the Apes stuff.

The movie box set for ?7

and the laughable but entertaining TV series for a tenner.

My most recent DVD buys are :

Grave of the Vampires, great film, dismal print
There will be blood

and I just got sent:

Kwaidan
Onibaba

and best of all...

the complete Maid Marian Tv series. So I'm going to revert to being 14 for a week!

This made me laugh. You bought On The Road Again and The Devil Wears Prada and got your missus The Omen Box Set - and you call yourself a seasoned gorehound :) (I suppose one at least has 'Devil' in the title) :D

vipco 9th July 2008 12:16 AM

Yep, On the Road Again is nine below zero live at Wilbarston hall who are 4 guys I love , musicaly , though Dennis Greeves is a lovely looking fella, check my avatar, and have followed for over 20 years, so im allowed that one.

Devil Wears Prada, well, what can I say.? I love 'chick flicks. They keep me in touch with my feminine side. LOL

kevxxx1 9th July 2008 07:34 AM

LOL. Saw Paul Verhoeven's Black Book yesterday. Verhoeven can be hit or miss but when he's good he's very good indeed (Robocop, Starship Troopers). This was very good and recommended.

vipco 9th July 2008 08:53 AM

He is very hit and miss. Starship Troopers is a great film, so's Robo Cop, though the bit where they torture Robo Cop, and break him with the kid watching is quite disturbing.

That scene's actually from ROBOCOP 2, Vipco, which was directed by Irvin Kershner.

I love Verhoeven, he's a great director and one that specialises in films that are unapologetically violent and explicit. I'm a big fan of ROBOCOP (hate the sequels), FOURTH MAN and BASIC INSTICT. Still not gotten round to seeing SOLDIER OF ORANGE or BLACK BOOK though.

I can't imagine what you found to dislike about the third one. Surely not the robot ninjas?

Bollocks, isn't it? Really awful and dumbed down for kids. I hate the mean-spirited second film too. Both are brainless cash-ins of the worst type.

Matt 9th July 2008 12:36 PM

Not only are the sequels dreadful, but they were a bad enough experience that Frank Miller apparently decided he wasn't interested in being involved with movies anymore. Fortunately he was coaxed back in so we did get the excellent Sin City movie.

I read somewhere that Darren Aronofsky is being touted to direct the Robocop remake. Which will be in 3-D.

I read that today - could be good, though the thought of seeing ROBOCOP trying to cope with heroin addiction and an obsession with binary numbers might not make for a commercially successful film :D

My mistake, its been that long from i've seen any Robo Cop films the plot lines are a distant memory .
I think after the 3rd film I never bothered with the franchise .

Was'nt there a Robo Cop series on cable .?

Have seen Soldier of Orange, its not a war film in the traditional sense , but its very good.

Paul, while your here , you know a good bit about Blu Ray and upscaling , do you know anything about the best settings to set the PS3 for upscaling.?

If you do , could you please let me know , and as long as you don't mind , i'll PM you my enquiry .
Thanks.

Paul@TheOverlook 9th July 2008 03:56 PM

Iill start a new thread, mate.

I've not seen SOLDIER OF ORANGE, KATIE TIPPEL or BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, though I've owned them all for YEARS! :D

Still got to get around to watching my BLACK BOOK Blu-ray, too.

steve 9th July 2008 06:20 PM

The Omen & Alien box-sets are a must buy at those current sale prices. The extras on the Alien set are worth ten quid alone in my opinion. I love the Alien films - the first film being one of my all time favourites. The third film is much better in the extended cut (included with the box-set).

I didn't know there was an Omen 4 (it's not bad, some nice touches) and have enjoyed the extras I've seen so far. Was a bit disappointed with the remake of The Omen as Liev Schriber wanders through the film as if in a coma. He's usually a superb actor but seems distracted through out the film. Julia Stilles is wonderful and brings a real sense of devastation to the role of Cathy. Well worth a look.

Another good buy was the Halloween 25 Years of Terror 4 disc set for only ten quid. Loads of extras, some of which are bit too talky for my liking.

I also bought series 4 & 5 of 'Oz' (HBO's prison drama). Series 5 was mis-priced at 12 quid in Asda (a great bargain) and Series 4 was only 19 quid.

I am now broke!

Funnily enough,I picked up the Tartan Verhoeven boxset in HMV on Sunday,it has all his Dutch films....will get round to watching 'em one day.....

Mojo 10th July 2008 07:41 PM

Tourist Trap

Two girls and a guy find themselves prisoners in a old timer's waxworks, where the wax figures seem to have a life of their own.

Funnily enough, this was the first ever film I saw on pre cert VHS and it's even better than I remember it. Atmospheric, scary, with the creepiest mannequins ever!

Nice anamorphic widescreen print from Full Moon, too.

Check this one out. Recommended.

Grindhouse Trailer Classics

Excellent fun. It's an odd experience just sitting and watching trailers but then again that was always one of the best parts about watching videos back in the day - seeing loads of over the top adverts for films you'd never heard of. It could also count as a simple wishlist of Shameless releases - I don't think there was a single one that I thought I wouldn't want to watch apart from possibly 'Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman'...

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 11th July 2008 01:34 PM

That sounds gr8! I've been meaning to get that!

I ordered these:

'The Zombie Dead' - 3.39

'Maniac' - 3.99

'Chopping Mall' - 3.99 (pre-order)

'Cannibal Apocalypse' - 3.99

'I Spit On Your Grave' - 2.99 (vanilla version)

I tell u if they're any gd later. :)

Paul@TheOverlook 11th July 2008 05:32 PM

Hope they're not UK discs, Iluvdvds, as CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and MANIAC are all cut...

Picked up 300 on Blu-ray today

vipco 11th July 2008 06:05 PM

Paul's right iluv, though the cuts to CA are minimal and they shouldn't effect your enjoyment of the film that much , but ISOYG and Maniac suffer with the cuts. If The Zombie Dead is Burial Ground then your in for a treat, especially if you've never seen it before ,it'is a fun little film.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 12th July 2008 09:54 AM

Unfortionatly they are ALL the UK discs. Sadly I don't have a mulit-region dvd player, which I really should get!

I just watched "The Zombie Dead" (AKA 'Burial Ground' AKA ' The Nights Of Terror') and I really don't know what to make of it. It is definetly so crap its brilliant! That 30-year old midget playing a 10year old seriously suffering from the oedipus complex! Everytime I see him, or even think about him, I burst out laughing!!!!!

Brilliant!

vipco 12th July 2008 10:51 AM

You Should check the ' NTSC Help ' Thread here on site, iluv , as there's links to dvd hack code sites there.
You just put in the code via the remote and it opens your player to R0.
Just type in make and model and the site gives you the unlock code for your model free of charge.
Check it out before buying a multi region player.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 12th July 2008 10:54 AM

Oooh! Goody! Will do :) Thank you

vincenzo 12th July 2008 10:57 AM

I'm not a big fan of Maniac anyway but strangely I thought the cuts actually helped the film. That strangulation seemed to go on FOREVER. http://www.shameless-films.com/forum...ilies/ack2.gif

If it's the AB release then the extras are a major bonus.

vipco 12th July 2008 11:00 AM

You'll find it on page 2 of the Shameless Chat section , titled 'NTSC Help'

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 12th July 2008 11:01 AM

Does anyone know about the XBOX 360? I know it plays Region 2 & obviously region 0 - because that's what I use but I hear it can't be hacked. And the last thing I want to do is damage the XBOX.

Yeah it was ridiculously over long. Perhaps he was trying to break the world record for the longest film strangulation.

When I had a 360 It could'nt be hacked, and as far as I know thats still the case.
You can get it chipped but this will invalidate your warrenty, plus cut you off from all XBox live services.

There is an HD DVD disc player add on you can get now for around the 20 / 30 quid mark which will upscale your SD DVD's to HD quality but im not sure if its R0 or not.
As its sold in all 3 major territories it would be silly locking the HD DVD disc player considering the poor Japanese sales and strong US sales. A R0 would make better business scense.
But the way MS has handled its console division from day 1, good business scense clearly isnt the order of the day .

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 12th July 2008 06:46 PM

Straightheads
Black Sheep
Murder Set Pieces (Directors Cut)
The Dead Next Door
My Dear Killer (Only need to get Frightened Woman now to get up to date)
Howard the Duck :D
Them

Quite enjoyed 'Straightheads', i'd recommend that if you haven't seen it. What did everyone else think of 'Black Sheep'? I thought it was going to suck but it was actually quite entertaining.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 12th July 2008 07:08 PM

Straightheads was okay-especially for those who want to see Gillian Anderson getting 'em out.....:D....
I ain't watched Black Sheep yet.....

Angel 13th July 2008 06:25 AM

Retribution Uncut Dutch DVD

Always wondered what the BBFC cuts to this film were. As far as I can see the main cut was to remove a scene showing a man having petrol poured over him and him being set alight as his attackers stand around laughing. Another cut was to the scene where Sally cuts her stomach open with a knife and a blow torch severing somebody's hand.

Just going by memory here as I no longer have the cut UK Video.

Not a bad film but certainly no classic.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 13th July 2008 10:04 AM

I just watched 'Maniac' and I luved it! Brilliant! It's so different to most horror films too. Great ending aswell! 5/5!!!!!!!

vipco 13th July 2008 11:23 AM

Have you seen Death Trap aka Eaten Alive yet iluv.?
Its a great film from the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre about a deranged maniac.
