Agreed

I think thats how we sort out the actresses from Buffy and Angel as to who is best. They are all decent actresses but our favourites are always the ones we fancy most.

The Slayer

Second viewing and I still don't think much of it, in fact take out a couple of the gory scenes and it plays like a lame TV movie.
(Pretty nice score mind, esp for this type of thing.)
I guess the slasher tag and hype around it, was always gonna hurt it for me.

she looks much older now, after watching American Reunion, she looked rough but maybe that was part of the character because she looks great in How I Met Your Mother.

FATHER'S DAY - Gross out fun from Troma. I normally hate comedy horror, particularly when it's broad - that's why I (mostly) hate Troma. In this case I admit I did actually catch myself supressing the distant twinges of comedic enjoyment on a couple of occasions, and I just quite liked the attempts at 80s patiche and the weirdness of the last reel. Actually, pretty much all the gore (including the dad-rape scenes) was quite grim and filmed for the most part with a straight face. Often find myself amused by the kind of shit that gets passed at '18' these days (the harsh treatment of middle aged men here includes explicit cock ripping).
FEAST 2 - I liked this more than the quite good but imo over rated initial entry. Comedy horror again, but this one at least features a pervasively cynical tone and strives to tip its bad taste gags over into genuinely mean spirited territory at points. Not that that should be a recommendation necessarily.
THE SEVENTH CONTINENT - In direct contrast to the two previous, some mind mashingly serious alienation. An Austrian family withdraws from a bourgeois life of carefully observed but meaningless rituals, then sets about dismantling itself with the same joyless precision as it lived. At points, fragmented interactions with objects replace characters and the latter give way to a flux of body parts and material processes - but humanity in the throes of despair is never far away. Somehow all of this is summed up by a sequence showing suicide orchestrated to a MeatLoaf video. The car-wash scenes are also luminescent, arcane almost, like entering a cosmic void in the midst of abject banality. I think this was Haneke's first theatrical release, and imo it's one of his most interesting.

Watched loads lately, far too many to list but one I will mention is Sorority Babes in the blah blah blah. What can I say about this 'film'. Crap acting, crap script/dialogue, crap special fx, crap plot, crap characters, crap monster, but you know what, I ****ing loved it! Absolute prime 80's B movie trash, what do you expect with a title like that, cheese and plenty of it! Added to my never ending wish list 8/10

BRAIN DAMAGE - First time I'd seen it and it was pretty good.

PRIMAL RAGE - Watched this on Netflix (I aint paying over £100 for the CR dvd) and I had high hopes but sadly it was a bit of a snoozer. A good idea and some decent fx but far too much talking.

antmumford 12th September 2012 10:59 PM

Just got back from the cinema, watched Lawless and I thought it was great. Superbly acted, beautifully shot, great soundtrack and brutally violent. What more could you ask for? Boobs I hear you say? well lucky for you Jessica Chastain get's em out too :thumb:

James Morton 13th September 2012 12:11 AM

just seen DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUCK
a low budget Canadian exploitaion film from the Sasko twins
a falshback had the 'grindhouse look'
fortunately it was the only scene in a good offbeat thriller with some horror to boot (pardon the pun:))

Saw Rumble Fish for the first time since my teenage years - pretentious, arty, borderline ludicrous in its relentless symbolism, but what the hell i still love it. All those deep focus shots look great on blu ray by the way - transfer grumblings on the internet a load of crap - much of the film was obviously meant to be soft focus but the close ups look crystal clear. The fact that the director of The Conversation, 2 Godfathers and Apocalypse Now then made this movie is beyond odd - it's more like the experimental debut of a director just out of art school.

Watched Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter on YouTube's Hammer channel, and Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires via the UK Warner DVD. :)

Pity there where never more Cpt. kronos movies, coming at the tail end of Hammer's succes, as it did. It really is quite a good movie.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it.There was definite potential for it to become a series of films.

I think Virus is no where near as bad as made out.

Agreed...

Lots of things viewed these past 2 weeks...

WATERWORLD
Fun well produced mad max at sea. Costner is cool as the marina and the production design on the attol is incredible. Enjoy it everytime i see it, i only wish someone would release the 175 minute directors cut.

MASTER OF THE WORLD
Very fun Jules Verne adaptation with a great role for Vincent Price and an unusual role for Charles Bronson.

THE DEPARTED
Seen this many times and while it's not Marty's best film, it's still a brilliantly constructed Crime thriller. We need more films like this.

TRICK 'R' TREAT
Forgot how fun this 80s horror throwback was, some nice gore and some great horror moments. Definitely worth a watch.

TRICK OR TREAT
I've only seen bits of this when we screened it for a room of people as i was pre-occupied with other things at the time this was shown, now watching it all the way through i can say that i really enjoyed it and it's a shame it's not more widely available. Great metal soundtrack too.

CRADLE WILL FALL AKA BABY BLUES
The DVD cover that accompanies this film on Letterboxd gives the wrong impression of the film, it's not about a mutant killer baby, it;s actually about Post-partum Psychosis and one woman's breaking point. Sure it does involve the killing of her children which can be seen as exploitation but it's a very well made film and it's exceptionally acted. Recommended

STASH HOUSE
Not your typical Dolph vehicle, this had a great premise and some great performances, Sort of a variation on the home invasion genre. Well worth a watch..

EXPENDABLES 2
So much better and bigger than the first. Loved every action packed minute of it. You can read my review of it here EXPENDABLES 2 REVIEW

CODE OF SILENCE
Superior Norris Vehicle that apparently started life as a script for a dirty harry movie, good direction from Andrew Davis helps and Dennis Farina thinking of ways to make moolah is a good running gag.

LILIES OF THE FIELD
A change from the ultra-violence, this is a wonderful film with a stella central performance from Sidney Poitier. Highly recommended.

AMERICAN PIE: THE REUNION
Not the best of the series, not by a long shot but still a fun comedy which is great to see the original Full cast back.

TWENTY8K
A little different to the usual crime ridden sarf Larndarn hoody crime film, but not that that makes this any better, Some Ok performances and some stylish shots of london does not make up for the fact that it looks less professional than some Channel 4 drama's.

HONEYMOON IN VEGAS
Pretty funny comedy with a great performance from James Caan but never really realised that Nic Cage has made a career from overacting.

THE LOVED ONES
Darkly comic and outstandingly nasty 'torture porn' from the land down under. With a brilliant psychotic performance by Robin McLeavy as Lola that reminded me of Kathy Bates in Misery. Highly recommended.

CABIN IN THE WOODS
It's going to have to take something even more original in the horror genre to beat this and i can't see anything on the horizon just yet. Absolutely incredible film, plays with horror movie stereotypes and goes ****ing bugnuts crazy during the final 20 minutes. Best film of the year for me so far.

THE LAST EXORCISM
Actually really enjoyed this mock doc about a preacher who is losing faith. Not entirely scary with some quite tame jump scares. Everyone i've spoken too hated the ending but i loved it.

I've been holding out on pre-ordering this for ages and was going to rent it, but reading this and a few other reviews has just convinced me to add it to an already mental amount of orders in the next few weeks!

Just out of interest, have you seen the original 'Infernal Affairs', which this film is based on, and if you have, what did you think of it?

I have seen Infernal Affairs, and i did enjoy it, i do however think that The Departed is superior to that film, it's more tightly plotted and acted although i still don't understand how Mark Wahlberg got an Oscar nom for the film when all he does is shout and swear and neither Matt Damon or DeCaprio were recognised.

I think you both misread HJ's point.

When Coppola made Rumble Fish, he'd already made The Conversation, two Godfathers and Apocalypse Now, meaning it's a completely different direction to take.

I think that The Departed is a better made film, as Scorsese is probably the greatest living filmmaker in the world, but Infernal Affairs has more heart to it. In TD, Matt Damon's character is a complete cock all the way through it, purely interested only in self preservation, choosing to end his "partnership" only when he realises he could be used as a fall guy any moment. Also, it contains the old Hollywood moralism that everybody gets what's coming to them.

IA on the other hand makes you actually (secretly) root for Andy Lau, because he's not a very bad guy, he's just grown up in this position that he now has to live with. With the way the first IA ends, there's more at stake as you know AL has to live with his mistakes, but can try and turn them round.
