Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

From IMDB - When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time, he finds Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the danger deepens after he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.

I'd still be here tomorrow if i went into the plot details of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. What begins as an intriguing little mystery grows in scope as the film develops into an eyebrow raising fantastical adventure.

Having never read the source material and having no wish to do so the film was viewed purely as a Tim Burton film, nothing more. What i first noticed is what a fantastic cast had been assembled - Eva Green (Easily the best thing about the film), Samuel L Jackson, Judi Dench, Terence Stamp, Chris O'Dowd, Rupert Everett and Hugo's Asa Butterfield as young Jacob. Sadly many of them are underused. Green's not in the first half hour and Jackson only turns up properly once events reach Blackpool!?

Burton keeps things quite dark as is his norm. There are several disturbing sequences as well as the odd gore effect but among all this typical Burton darkness we have huge references to other films. During the film's brilliant climax in Blackpool (see you did read it correctly) we get skeletons, which the producers say was as a direct reference to Jason and the Argonauts (1963), who have a huge fight on the North Pier with creatures that could have walked straight out of a Resident Evil movie, and the whole thing sort of played out like a Tim Burton does X-Men.

Whilst this is nowhere near the top of the Tim Burton tree i did enjoy it. Yes the plot becomes ever so convoluted at times and he also seems to have lost his knack of great story telling which was on display in the likes of Edward Scissorhands (1990) yet this film is fun, easy on the eye and well worth a go for the spectacle alone.

I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't already read the book(s). I don't know what but whoever wrote the script took a lot of liberties with the story and altered a lot of the narrative. That aforementioned scene in Blackpool isn't even part of the book series. I can understand that they wanted to make a nice tidy stand-alone film and not be bothered with a trilogy though.

I only saw it once at the cinema so I think a re-watch is needed at some point soon, when I can pick it up for around a fiver on blu.

I really wouldn't know about that.

I loved the Blackpool scenes, both on the pier and at the Tower. There's a doc on the disc about shooting in Blackpool on the prom and in the Tower Ballroom. It kind of surprised me as i thought it would be a CGI Blackpool but it wasn't. T'was funny watching them making the promenade snow covered with trams going by.

Not only is the violence and gore on the increase boobs are making a big splash in the entry to the series ( sex jokes awwww yeah)

The series keeping its fun factor consistent for me extra gore and boobs earns The Final Chapter an

Tommy v Jason pt2

Not a lake in sight this time around instead we are on the funny farm home to a group of young adults with various mental issues and social phobias. On this outing Jason is a lot less menacing than the previous version and while there is a big body count we hardly see any impact shots in the kills just shots of the aftermath which is really disappointing after the great gore and effects in part IV. Just like IV boobs are an important part of the plot which almost makes up for lack of impact scenes But not enough so part V drops two points from IV and gets a

Emma is on the same page as me too much cut away from the kills and she didn't like the feel of the film or the fact it's not the real Jason and not one she would return to in future viewings so her score is

I saw this at the cinema when it was released and, like you, hadn't read the source material (I still haven't). I went in hoping for the best but, based on Tim Burton's previous duds, expected the worst, and was pleasantly surprised by a thoughtful and involving film which engrossed me throughout. It's really well written by Jane Goldman and Burton does a great job with the design and all-star cast. It is something I would quite happily watch again.

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 today.
So I will start with this. I do not like Marvel, the only reason I went to see this (same with watching the 1st film) is because I love James Gunn.
The story is fine, what made this enjoyable for me is 2 characters, Drax and Yondu. Everyone else is there. Also great soundtrack

The Hallow

Seriously good folk horror/supernatural home invasion flick. Very tense in places with great use of location and creature design. Recommended.
