Curse of the Phoenix (2014)

A young man, Josh, who works as a historical tourist guide aboard HMS Phoenix in Plymouth is haunted by a strange apparition - The Wraith. She believes Josh is her lost true love and tries to claim him for herself, putting Josh and any woman close to him, in mortal danger.

Chucked out on dvd last year as Ghost Ship with a suitably lurid cover, this British supernatural drama is one of those haunting films that has a quiet contemplative atmosphere rather than any cheap scares giving it the feel of an MR James ghost story rather than say, Insidious. In fact it's safe to say it feels like a film from another era evoking memories of Vernon Sewell's 1952 effort Ghost Ship.

Although a low budget affair the film certainly has some style to it. The Plymouth locations and the old ship itself are impressive as is the assured direction from Robert Young (Vampire Circus (1972)). The main actors are all convincing although some of the extras leave a little to be desired. The story is a slow burner but engages with likable characters thrown into creepy sequences.

Curse of the Phoenix is unlikely to wow you but i rather enjoyed it.

Dr. Strange I like to keep my toes in the MCU so give this another viewing this afternoon. Although i enjoyed all the other films (apart from Iron Man 2 & 3 - shoddy cash cow films imo), this and the 2 Guardians of the Galaxy films stand out as my faves. Benedict Cumberbatch is just awesome and i find he plays the lead role really well and the film zips along at a pretty good pace. Wife is not really into comic adaptations and she really enjoyed this as well, having only seen the first Avengers film and both Guardians of the Galaxy films so it seems to work pretty well as a standalone film as well as being tied into the MCU. Will watch again when i binge through the films ready for when Infinity Wars comes out, 4.5/5.

Supersonic Saucer
An alien befriends some children and accidentally steals a shitload of money, prompting a gang of robbers to kidnap him.
It's charming, the alien itself looks kinda silly but it is fun nonetheless.

Went to see kingsman 2. My mother borrowed the first film while I was away and genuinely seemed to like it. She doesn't like going to the cinema on her own so I went along. After she left in a taxi I walked back into the cinema and bought a ticket to this. I wasn't sure what to expect but after watching that bundle of disappointment for the second time but I thought what the hell.
Ralph Spall, who is becoming steadily more like his father year on year (this is not a bad thing mind) plays Luke who with his friends plan yearly boys getaways to places like Vegas and Amsterdam. This year after seeing one of their old college friends brutally murdered and failing to do anything, Luke, plagued by guilt, heads off with his friends to go hiking in Sweden. While there one of the group injures his leg and the friends decide to take a shortcut through some dense Forrest. Naturally this being a horror movie its an awful idea and pretty soon the group find themselves in a hunters cabin where there is some kind of pagan idol. Things go downhill as the group find themselves hunted by something in the wood.
Sadly the screen I saw this in was empty. Kingsman 2 was still quite busy. This pretty much explains why so much we see in cinema's today is so bad. The ritual, while employing a lot of familiar horror tropes, uses them well and crafts something that feels genuinely fresh and inventive. Sadly if no one see's it Jigsaw is probably going to do solid business and Hollywood will decide to churn out dozens more of those instead. Then we'll get endless moaning on social media about why nothing interesting is being made.
If your Vue does this for £4.99 or you have one of those cineworld passes get this watched. The soundmix is great, there's no 'the lead character was just insane' cop outs and we get a well realised creature that is wisely introduced in stages and doesn't just run at the camera constantly shouting loudly like pennywise, or feature endless jump scares of cats leaping out of cupboards.

Watched this today and can highly recommend it, yeah it’s nothing truly original but in this case that isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s out on DVD tomorrow, and if there’s no blu ray coming or available overseas, I’ll be picking it up.

enjoyable low budget trash, mixing mad max gangs and mutants and some stop motion monster. will it win any awards, is the acting anygood? NO but its fun and i would rather watch something like this than a borefest like citizen Kane.

Cameron Mitchell has top billing as the creator/leader of the mutants, even though he is only in it for a total of around 10 minutes. 6/10

not to be confused with the Hoff movie from the year before (1988)

i really wasn't expecting anything from this but was pleasantly surprised, what we have is a rip off, of Rosemary's baby. you woman after the birth of her infant son moves into her mother in laws home with her husband, soon after arriving she begins have strange and disturbing dreams and feels like both her husband and mother in law are keeping something from her and controlling her. creepy with a dreamlike quality in places and unlike Rosemary's baby which i think is overrated and didn't enjoy, i enjoyed this which was thanks to the actress playing the mother, who or who might not be a good as actress as Mia Farrow, but unlike Farrow's character i didn't want to slap her in the face every-time i saw her. 7/10

now watching witchcraft, followed by this, which I've not seen before.

Yellow Emanuelle

Soft porn title cash in which is basically a melodrama with softcover scenes. Made in Hong Kong, the film misses a trick by not having a character named Mr Wang.

The Reedemer: Son of Satan

Completely wonky slasher film that falls into moments of accidental art inbetween moments of off kilter average.

Lord of Illusion

Clive Barker spunks up his sexual obsessions onto the screen in this wonderfully twisted hunk of occult trash.

Werewolf Woman

F*ck me! Lupine lunacy fleshed out in nudity and gore, walking the fine line between utter shite and shite. Recommended.

Belko Experiment

Forget the 6th form politics of the film and enjoy the slaughter. Good fun.
