Shape of water.

Creature from the Black Lagoon where the square jawed 50's-early 60's masculine lead is a genuine monster and the creature has a sort of noble dignity that humanity seems to lack in an era where everyone is divided and unable to be true to themselves if they are outside the social norms of the era.
Genuinely surprised this one works. I like Guillermero del Toro, he makes the sort of films Jean-pierre Jeunet should be making if he had the ability to inject any sort of substance into his souless, brainless movies. He doesn't disappoint here and I find myself rooting for this one at the oscars.

Bad apples

Two girls who remain masked throughout the film go on a killing spree after killing their headteacher. It's all set around Halloween so there's some seasonal flavour as the girls go about their business.
Its a film that desperately wants to be a John Carpenter film but falls short. Its got a strange, Nihilistic atmosphere to it and the moody synth score is good but there's too much Padding with some scenes going on too long and feeling rather flat. Its a bit too clear they seem to have been shot with less passion than the actual horror which is pretty decent. I'll probably watch it again and reassess it at some point but my initial reaction is poundland fodder.

Don't Grow up

Speaking of Jean-pierre Jeunet, here we have a zombie film with his approach to film making down to a tee. Its a solid concept, kids not wanting to grow up as it means turning into a zombie. It looks lovely, with some great locations and a mostly decent cast. However it does nothing with this and feels like a souless exercise in style over substance. Its somewhat irritating as it feels like a great idea horribly wasted. Much like Delicatessen, Mic-macs, Amilie ect.

New York Ripper.

Needed something trashy. Fulci's notorious Giallo is probably as vile as Giallo in venice. With plenty of misogynistic killings and liberal use of the 42nd street scene to provide plenty of seedy sleaze, to the point where you can almost smell the cum in the porn theatre. However unlike Giallo In Venice it's actually a good movie. Its at a point in Fulci's career where his illness was not impeding his ability to deliver and it genuinely does that in spades.

I actually watched this one at the weekend too, along with Call Me By Your Name, both of which are causing all sorts of award season buzz and both deservedly so! I'm looking forward to seeing both of them again soon.

Haha, yes but the scene where Sally Hawkins is explaining to Octavia Spencer what (and how it) happened to put a smile on her face was up there

Ahem.

Black Snake (1973, Russ Meyer)
Warbeck stars in this grim wee tale of slavery and some sleaze. Percy Herbert (stalwart British actor) also in a sizeable role this time. Worth a look.

Panic (aka Bakterion) (1982, Tonio Ricci)
Warbeck again ....scientist gets covered in goo and goes on rampage (cough). A story that DW fans will find a few echoes of (Inferno ahem) .... terrible print but yet another Italian film shot in the UK that I hadn't seen from the director of Days Of Hell already....

No Retreat No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder (1987, Cory Yeun)
Violent Rambo style exploiter . The lead actor is about as wooden as it gets ... luckily Matthias Hues is the antagonist so no one notices. Also stars the Rothrock as a feisty pilot/sidekick.
