You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsay, 2018) See this. Ever since Ratcatcher (which reminded me so much of my own childhood ...) I have admired her work. This I see as another of her intrusions into a singular point of view (see also Morven Callar), as we follow a very broken soul on a self made path to 'redemption'. Taxi Driver it isn't. People are fcking lazier now it seems. Maybe The Horseman? But that doesn't have any quotable lines Ahem. SEE this film.

The bogey man. supernatural Halloween type horror about a mirror possessed by the spirit of a dead man. when they were children brother and sister Lacey and willie were terrorised by one of their mothers boyfriends who used to tie willie up. but Lacey gets a knife and cuts the ropes and willie brutally stabs him to death. many years later Lacey is having terrible nightmares and her husband takes her back to the old house were it all happened. but Lacey goes nuts when she sees a vision of the man in the mirror and breaks it unleashing the evil spirit. i love this film a lot and watched it on the old Vipco vhs in my teens. love the cool kills as well with the scissers and the possessed knife. 92.9 out of 100.

House on the edge of the park. starring David hess from Last house on the left as Alex an insane lunatic who enjoys raping and killing girls and the chap from Cannibal ferox who plays his simple sidekick Ricky. Alex is a mechanic and a bunch of rich people turn up at his garage with car problems and after they get it fixed they invite them to there house for a party. but Alex goes beserk with a razor raping and torturing the hosts. this is a very brutal film and David hess is too convincing as a maniac it is also quite funny at times as well with Ricky doing his boogeing. I also recognise several familer faces in this film including the girl who got her head put in the oven in Absurd. Very good 93.7 out of 100.

Eaten Alive (1980). Another viewing for Umberto Lenzi's notorious gut muncher. But this time on Blu-ray. Sheila played by Janet Agren, hires a guide to take her to the jungle of New Guinea after it is discovered that her sister is part of a weird religious cult run by genre favourite Ivan Rassamov. What follows is the usual shenanigans you can expect in these films, nudity, rape, gore, including a native chowing down on a rubber leg, and the obligatory real animal slaughter that is fully on show in Severin's uncut presentation. Not a great film by any means, and with dreadful dubbing as well. But it's still fun to watch like a lot of these old Italian films are. 6 out of 10. |

Just had a bit of a DC Bat-Fest with Gotham By Gaslight, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, Batman and Harley Quinn, and Batman Ninja. WOW! Gotham By Gaslight It's a great graphic novel (by Mike Mignola) and the movie length animation is sublime and faithful to the book. Basically, they took the premise that Gotham, in the 1890s, was visited by Jack the Ripper. This was the first of the "Elseworlds" stories and includes all the characters you'd expect. It's a "must watch" for nerds like me I give it 19.8/10 as it has blood, politics and they changed the villain's true identity (to surprise the nerds). Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay The trailer for this was presented in a "Grindhouse" fashion, on the Gotham By Gaslight disc, and upped the ante for the film. Thankfully it delivered, a very enjoyable film, despite concentrating too much time on Deadshot (mmm...). Only 15/10 due to the Deadshot-centricity. Batman and Harley Quinn Parts of this animation had me in stitches but I've got overly sensitive chuckle muscles, it might not even reach yours. At one point it suggests that Harley and Nightwing did the humpety-humpety, there are girly-bits on show in some scenes, and there's a great bar fight, 18/10 (downgraded for the obvious sexist imagery). Batman Ninja Last, but definitely not least, the outrageous extravaganza that is Batman Ninja. I am almost lost for words for this film! If you like Batman and love Japanese Anime then all of your Sundays have come at once, it's a tremendous tour-de-force, anything goes mix of the West and the East. I'm not going to say anything more about it except 32/10! All of these films were on Blu-ray and most were accompannied by loads of enjoyable extras and the casting was great. The Death of Superman is out next month, I've got my pre-order in and can't wait. I might even dig out Batman: The Killing Joke and Justice League Dark for another marathon session!

A classic that probably single handily started the zombie genre(the word zombie is never mentioned), still a chilling horror in places but also a social commentary of the time, the scene in which the little girl kills her mother is still shocking, fantastic picture quality and some great extras but sadly very poor packaging. 9/10 Now watching carry on regardless |
