Watched that Ghost Stories last night. A debunker of fake psychics is handed 3 cases to investigate. I recommend this to any portmanteau fan. Whilst there is nothing new here for genre fans, I am more intrigued to see the stage show now ahem. Able performances from most of the cast.

Psych 9. 2010. Roslyn takes on a night job at a hospital that's closing down, having a troubled childhood she thinks the spate of Murders in the area are connected with the psychiatric ward. This is one of those films that goes off the plot a bit and is it a ghost story or serial killer movie, with some twists and turns. It does have a Session 9 feel to it and tries to imitate but never succeeded even though Michael Biehn, Carey Elwes and Colleen Camp make their characters a bit creepy. 5 out of 10

Rosemary's Baby. 1968 Young couple Rosemary and Guy move to a new apartment block, but strange things occur, a young woman is found dead, Guy a struggling actor lands a big acting role and Rosemary is pregnant. Doubt falls on Rosemary as she believes a pact with the devil has been made or is it paranoia. This was probably the best horror when it came out but now it's more psychological mind thriller movie by Roman Polanski with his loose tales of apartment dwellers with Repulsion and The Tennant. Mia Farrow portrayal is brilliantly well acted as the shy happy girl to extreme frail looking girl that's slowly loosing her sanity and beliefs that there is something wrong with her pregnancy. Ruth Gordon is great as the sweet old lady from upstairs who makes herbal drinks but is it something else in there but surely old ladies aren't that bad. The movie moves at a good steady pace nothing seems to drag on, it's not one of those films where your screaming at it to get to the point and the haunting lullaby at the start gives the movie it's creepy tone.

Volcano. Strange seismic disturbances in LA lead safety inspector Tommy Lee Jones to realise that an unexpected event has created a volcano under the city that's about to go boom! This late 90s disaster flick came out the same year as Dante's Peak, but unfortunately is nowhere near as good, and certainly hasn't aged as well. It gets real silly real quick, and the effects are also pretty poor and unconvincing and again haven't aged well. Mediocre.

The House Bunny (2008) Frothy sorority comedy starring Anna Faris as a Playboy Playmate who leaves Heff's mansion and ends up a House Mother at a failing geeky girls sorority house . Despite sounding like any other teen movie The House Bunny is actually very good. As well as the usual hi-jinks it provides a useful commentary on the need to fit in and social acceptance. Faris is as usual excellent and tops a fairly heavy weight cast for this sort of thing - Emma Stone, Kat Dennings, Beverley D'Angelo, Colin Hanks and of course Hugh Hefner in an elongated cameo. - All performances, together with a witty script, that lift the film out of the run of the mill sludge it could have been. |
