The Slayer. 1982.

Two couples holidaying on a island, one a troubled artist believes her nightmares are coming true as the group are being stalked at killed.

This was a decent watchable horror, the acting may not be the best but the killings make it fun to watch, it does seem to be a bit slow to begin with but the dark atmosphere does speed it up. Sarah Kendall takes on the role of the troubled actress Kay, with only two films to her credit she has disappeared from the movie world, she does try to keep us entertained with her nightmares coming to life. Fans of slasher films will enjoy this. 6-7 out of 10.

Stand By Me
A group of kids head out in a journey to find the corpse of a missing kid.
A cracking film and one of the best Steven King adaptations out there is a darker take on coming of age, with some stellar performances including Corey Feldman and Kiefer Sutherland.

Naked You Die (1968)

Originally a project for Mario Bava, it was based on a story of his called Cry Nightmare - co-written by Tudor Gates - and somehow ended up with Antonio Margheriti.

An early Giallo, Naked You Die isn't as lurid as later films in the cycle and despite the exploitative title features no revealing nudity nor anything in the way of gore. It's a well plotted film with the focus on suspense and one or two sequences work really well, however one or two also make no sense whatsoever and the ending i felt was spoiled by the Italian dub, if you see the film you'll understand what i mean concerning the voice of one character. Sound wise it's also interesting in that the films main theme seems to be a rip off of the Batman tv series theme.

As with other Margheriti films such as Seven Deaths in the Cats Eye (1973), Naked You Die looks splendid and is beautifully photographed. It's also decently played especially when Hollywood star Michael Rennie pops up as the detective searching for the killer. As with the majority of Gialli there are red herrings galore, however the only person you're sure isn't the killer is star Mark Damon - he's just too damn nice, well Damon and leading ladies Eleanora Brown and Sally Smith naturally.

Many seem to talk ill of this film because it's exploitation levels are low, and they are, you can't deny it, but below the surface Naked You Die has many other elements that are worth discovering.

For me one of the best vampire films of the 80s that successfully blends comedy and horror with a teen style movie. Great charcters and acting and a killer soundtrack. A film I will never grow bored of. 9.5/10


Now watching The Changeling, never has a wheelchair been so disturbing and creepy.

Looper (2012)

Rian Johnson does Trancers but adds more plot loopholes and woeful characterization. I'm pretty sure Bruce Willis was asleep throughout this film.

This is how NOT to do a time travel movie. It's very rare i ever turn a film off but i did with Looper with twenty minutes to go.

Let's hope nobody ever lets Johnson anywhere near the Star Wars universe.

Atrocious (2010)

Some people think this Spanish found footage flick lives up to it's name but i thought it was really enjoyable.

The bulk of the film, it's a mere 71 minutes, involves a couple of youths exploring the maze at the back of their family getaway retreat because they hear it's haunted by the ghostly apparition of a girl, but when the family dog goes missing events begin to take a turn for the worse...very quickly

Whilst the first half of the film is pretty much the same as any found footage film - introductions and the usual arguments, except the characters aren't annoying which also helps and grievances are relatable, - the second half i found at times incredibly creepy. It uses the Blair Witch idea of having the protagonists outside in the dark, in this case lost in the maze, a maze populated by old statues and seats which catch your eye in the dark making you think something is there giving the shaky cam footage an added dimension i felt, and the maze proved a great environment.

Tension builds well and i genuinely felt unsettled watching the final half hour of Atrocious. If you like the original Blair Witch Project then this might be just up your street.

So did I. Rian Johnson's first two films, Brick and The Brothers Bloom are both brilliant.
