He's one of my favourites ever since arrested development and superbad, yes he only has one style but he's good at it.

I think Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is my fave.

Just started watching v/h/s but don't know if I'm going to like it as it done in the style of Blair witch etc with someone filming as from a video camera.:(

Edit

Switched of and put videodrome on

SShaw 1st February 2013 08:32 PM

This evening I gave Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (German blu-ray) a spin. It's very different from the previous films in the series with an almost mystical quality. For most of the film its not really clear where it is going. I liked it.

Otherwise known as "found footage" ;)

Yeah, I can't be arsed to check that one out either (finish my current job tomorrow, so will finally have the time to start watching films again :woot:) . . .

A mixed bunch this time.....

The House At The End Of The Street (Mark Tonderai, 2012)
...And this is why I can't watch mainstream films. Featuring Elizabeth Shue and her from the Hunger Games, this risible "thriller" about moving into a neighbourhood with "a past" was the epitome of committee driven film making imo. P A S S.

Seven Psychopaths (Martin McDonagh, 2012) Now this was more like it. A scriptwriter finds that his friends "advice" has wider consequences cough cough. Great performance from Walken imo. Even the Farrell didn't piss me off as much haha. Great use of music as well (Half Man Half Biscuit!!!!). Recommended.

Just A Gigolo (David Hemmings, 1978) WOW. As a Bowie fan of long standing, this was the Holy Grail (I've seen The Image.ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ:pound:) in terms of his work. It was worth the wait. Ostensibly the story of a German officer's misadventures after the Great War, this was A ****ING HOOT. Either Bowie was "distracted" during the shooting, or Hemmings was a weak hand on the tiller, but it's not what I call "acting". We watched the longer print (101 minutes). Am now dying to see the 95 minute one, which we nearly put on straight after. Michty!!

Rounded off the night with Arrow's print of A Bay Of Blood with Tim Lucas' comm. Informative, but I do feel he has too much reverence for Bava in places........

Shame to hear that V/H/S isn't hitting the spot in certain quarters. Ok, it IS flawed, but easily more satisfying than the cookie cutter dross like the first film on this post that Hollywood churns out.
For a shite found footage film, check out the dire and laughable Episode 50:p

Revenge of the Corpse was a first time viewing, and to be honest I was a little under-whelmed. I was expecting an all out assault of the senses Shaw Bros. style, and was actually left a little wanting. Enjoyable in places, but slightly dull in others, which meant I found myself checking the run time every now and then to see how much was remaining.

Bio-Zombie is one of my favourite Eastern zombie outings (along with Junk), and it's one I'd definitely recommend horror fans looking for something a little different in relation to both zombies and Asian horror; silly but highly enjoyable.

To pinch Baseball Fury's idea, I shall review my last few films using only 5 words, all of which are films I've seen before many times

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly-Amazing film, best score ever!

The Magnicent Seven-Not the masterpiece people claim

Jaws-Best shark film ever made

Never said it isn't a great film, I just don't think it's as good as people claim, never have done. Great cast though, but I'm more of a fan of the Italian rip offs myself

Season of the Witch (2011)

I've had this film knocking around for over a year now and the largely negative response to it put me off watching until now.

I don't really get the hostility towards the film. Set in the 14th century it follows the path of two Knights transporting an accused witch to a remote abbey to stand trial.

Starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, the film is a lively action / horror affair, fast paced, action packed and boasting some fine set pieces, fortunately, until the final scenes the film isn't blatantly CGI heavy either. The film is well acted and has a superior British guest cast, Christopher Lee, Stephen Graham, Claire Foy and the excellent Robert Sheehan fresh from his stint on the brilliant Misfits.

The film looks the part, the photography is lovely to look at, its Budapest and Salzburg settings suit legends of ancient witchcraft and plague. The movie's tone is always serious, yet was a whole lot more fun than the simillar Black Death.

Gran Torino - Superb. Get off my lawn.

SShaw 2nd February 2013 04:57 PM

Red Tears is something that only the Japanese can really pull off. From the over-the-top opening scene, a killer folding the corpse of his latest victim to fit into a carry-on sized piece of luggage, the film borrows elements as diverse as South Korean chick-flicks, Japanese splatter horror, Hollywood police procedurals and the hyper-realistic violence of Hong Kong action cinema and somehow manages to mix them into something that while a mess is never less than entertaining. The copy I have, imported from Austria, is advertised as “uncut” and has English friendly sub-titles (something lacking from the German blu-ray.

Fair review BE.

It came in the wake of a very influential film (Golden Harvest's Spooky Encounters) with the difference that it is a more straight (classical or old fashioned depending how you look at it) Shaw horror (the incorporated fight scenes are just an example how classic the setup is) which basically re-uses the old vengeful ghost storyline with little new added.

I found it enjoyable myself but The Fake Ghost Catchers (also Shaw) from the following year is better imho as it incorporates humor like Spooky Encounters .

Just finished. (mentioned this in another thread)

Pretty much the last word on Amicus. Its a huge documentary with loads of interviews from a whole bunch of people involved with the studio. Stupidly expensive at the moment, especially considering the thing comes on 2 dvd-r's but shop around and pick it up if you like amicus, its an interesting watch with a nice tribute to peter cushing.

Having pretty much slept through Thursday and most of Friday and most of January it seems I decided to get in bed fairly early last night to watch a film.

Decided it was time to tackle some of the Mill Creek box sets.

http://di1-1.shoppingshadow.com/imag...+movie+set.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Furnished.jpg

Single Room Furnished (1968) Final film of Jayne Mansfield which appears to be heavily pushed but as I wasn't around when it's first out this is more of an assumption. Really quite enjoyable although it did strike me as being a bit "overacted" by most of the cast, not as if they were bad actors more as if they were performing on stage rather than film. I was impressed with the picture quality from this dvd, not sure if my blu-ray upscaling played a part. I really found it entertaining, a cross between a propaganda film and a kitchen sink drama. I'm really quite impressed with the Mill Creek collections, I can't wait to watch more of them.

Hoping for a bit more excitement tonight so plan to watch the made for tv movie Killdozer (1974) which is basically what it sounds like, a strange spirit takes over a bulldozer turning it into a killing machine.

A disappointing end to the films, but it does have it's moments, and Jerry Goldsmith's score is once again a joy to listen to.

Love that score especially 'The Hunt' section!

This evenings film was Dredd. I missed this at the cinema but was looking forward to seeing it given the largely positive reception here and elsewhere. I found it to be pretty solid and entertaining and while it is one of the better action films of the last couple of years I'm not sure its as deserving of some of the superlatives it has garnered - unless your yardstick is the 80's Stallone Dredd adaptation.

that would be 1995 Stallone Adaptation, i watched DREDD last night and absolutely loved every minute of it.

V/H/S - brilliant, a shot in the arm for modern horror (in my opinion) and the best 'found-footage'-style film I've seen.

Cheerleaders - crap

Revenge of the Cheerleaders - crapper
