Southern backwoods monster movie,whats not to like.The film is just steeped in a sweaty,muggy swampness (is that a word) you could almost feel them pesky mosquito's buzzing around the room.Not only do we get a weird backwoods community hiding a secret from the outside world,but a gooey bladder effects make-up by Tom Burman,as the main man-creature transforms from human to some sort of giant insect,with a lust for raping women and killing.Now throughout the film,the characters keep mentioning the insect cicada,now i have not got a clue what they are,and after googling the name i still have no clue,but whatever they are,if you transform into one and are on some vengeance rampage because your real dad was one,then you will be one ugly mutha,but on the bright side you will have the strength to rip throats out and decapitate people.The under lying story of infidelity and vengeance really adds an almost gothic feel to this swamp invested tale...Im a sucker for old school special effects,and in the 1980's nearly every horror and science fiction film with a monster featuring in it,had some sort of bubbling skin effect as the contours of the skin stretch and expand,to some extreme proportions.Oh yeah there is also some very cool actors including Ronny Cox ,Don Gordon and R.G. Armstrong.Paul Clemens as the young boy possessed by his fathers past and an ugly insect,really does a great job,grinning manically as he goes about killing.

Young Frankenstein 1974

The great grandson of Victor Frankenstein inherits the castle and finds the work of recreating dead tissue to life decides to try it himself with hilarious disastrous results.

Comedy duo Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder turn the horror film into a comedy from start to finish, Gene Wilder takes the lead role as Frederick Fronkensteen who travels to Transylvania and is met by his assistant Igor (or as he puts it Eyegor) played by Marty Felmingham and lab assistant Inga played by Teri Garr. Madeline Kahn as the socialite and fiancee Elizabeth. Kenneth Mars as Inspector Kemp with the monocle and mechanical arm and Peter Boyle as the creature.

This is one of those films that you can watch over and still laugh at even with Gene Hackman in a small role as the blind man or Victor and the monster "Puttin on the ritz" routine. Some of the scenes took more than one take as the cast and crew were in stitches with laughter. What wasa bit more amazing they filmmakers managed to get the old laboratory equipment that was used in the 1931 movie.

Flash Gordon 1980.

A American quarterback, a journalist and a crazy scientist travel to the planet Mongo to stop an evil Emperor Ming from destroying Earth.

This is one of those cheesiest campy Sci-fi films that's still a bit entertaining and backed by a great score by Queen, (can you say flash without thinking or Saying AHHH?).

Sam J. Jones plays the hero Flash, Melody Anderson plays Dale Arden and Topol stars as Dr Hans Zarkov who believed the end of the world will happen. Bond actor Timothy Dalton stars as Prince Barin and loudmouth Brian Blessed (how he managed not to swear) as leader of the hawkmen Prince Vultan. Ming was played brilliantly by Max Von Sydow.

There was some problems behind the scenes with this film, apparently there was some communication problems between the British and American cast and the Italian crew. Sam Jones didn't get along that well producer Dino De Laurentiis that a fight broke out and Jones walked off set and a unnamed actor to replace Jones's voice in pre production, and two sequels were to emerge but due to cinema fails they never happened. One scene was scrapped when Ming hypnotised Flash to think Dale was a giant spider, there is some good visual effects and did anyone get freaked out by Klytus death?

The Beast Within (1982)

I wasn't as gripped by this film as the Inspector was - a few too many scenes of lying in hospital exposition for me - but agree that it had a nice Southern Gothic atmosphere about it and the practical special effects were mind blowing. The transformation scene where Michael can no longer hold back the spirit of Billy Connors that's possessing him is superbly done - gory and very gooey with skin twisting and convulsing.

Shedding his skin like a Cicada in fact. A flying tree insect with a Cricket like buzz which happens when a male calls out to a female, or in the case of Michael / Billy - when he's on the prowl about to rape a woman or behead some local hick er' dignitary.

On the whole, The Beast Within is a decent bit of studio exploitation with one spectacular set piece of gory wizardry.

Im glad you explained the cicada, what a bizarre creature...im surprised we did not get a glut of creatures raping people...I can think of about four films involving interspecies sex...

The Transporter (2002)

Classic action from the Luc Besson stable. Superb French location photography and the Stath at his very best. Ranging from the ultra professional as he goes about his transporting job in the opening half hour to super slick (literally) as he covers his topless torso in engine oil in a fun hand to hand fight sequence with a dozen bad guys.

Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)

By 1988 the slasher film was simply treading water (or was that dead in the water?) and the only way to go was to put a smile on the face of the audience who had pretty much seen it all before, so what the makers of Sleepaway Camp II gave us was a film crammed with boobage, sex, gory deaths and bad Heavy Metal (Anvil) as well as satire as it gently mocks the likes of Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and other staples of the slasher genre.

As for the plot? Well what there is is exactly the same as every other slasher film set at summer camp - oversexed young people getting slaughtered in every way imaginable by... well, that would be telling.

For all it's simplicity, the fact the exploitation motifs come thick and fast make this a lot of fun.

Deep Blue Sea
A science team use sharks to create a protein to cure alzheimer disease. Unfortunately as a consequence the sharks get smarter and it becomes a fight for survival.
Boy oh boy has this not aged well, I used to enjoy this as a kid and now I find it quite funny. Samuel L Jacksons death is still hilarious.

A film that on paper , shouldn't work , Robert Downey as Holmes and directed by Guy Ritchie? But it actually works with Downey and Ritchie bringing there talents and giving something a little different to Sherlock Holmes. A lot more action packed than the usual Holmes outing. 8/10
