Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989)

More of the same comedy slasher nonsense except it's actually less of the same in reality. Yes the plot is the same but the gore and exploitation factors are certainly less than the second film offered.

Had they gone with the scenes cut out of the film shown as dvd extras then i'd have rated this slightly higher.

The Look of Love (2013)

Comedy actor Steve Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom team up again following 2010's excellent series The Trip and come up with a biopic depicting the life of Soho porn king Paul Raymond.

Both funny and outrageous (a bit), The Look of Love depicts life in London's Soho district of the late sixties and seventies with a passion not seen since... well the slap n' tickle days of the saucy seventies from the likes of Stanley Long and Mary Millington.

I thought Millington might have been in this film but sadly not, however Fiona Richmond is, as played by the excellent Tamsin Egerton. I don't know how close Coogan, excellent as ever, comes to capturing the real life Raymond although he does look a little like him (If you squint and the room is dark) but every scene he features in he's compelling viewing.

My only gripe is the last half hour or so. The idea that sex sells is jettisoned for a bittersweet finale as Raymond's daughter (Imogen Poots) dies of a drug overdose with Raymond also being named as the wealthiest man in Britain. Of course this is all true but the change in the film's tone is ever so slightly jarring. Director Michael Winterbottom does trademark in misery though.

Taking place more or less after the first film. Watson is about to get married but Watson and his wife life are in jeopardy when Holmes is begins a battle of wits against Moriarty after the death of Irene Adler. Not only is Holmes and Watson in danger from the Napoleon of crime ,but also the fate of the entire world. Watching this i thought occurred to me, even though he is American Downeys performance made me think he could of been a decent Doctor Who. 8.5/10

A film that surpassed most people expectations, in a lot of ways it's surpasses the tv version ( which is still great). Very creepy and well acted from the young cast. One of the best King adaptations in years. Looking forward to seeing the second chapter on sunday. all clowns are evil and should be burnt with fire.

9.5/10

Now watching the deadly spawn.

Samantha. Martha Plimpton is Samantha, an eccentric young woman who is thrown into emotional disarray when, on her 21st birthday, her parents finally admit she was adopted (or rather, left on their doorstep in a wicker basket!). Feeling like an impostor in her own life, Samantha goes on a quest to find her birth parents, but her obsession threatens to derail her musical education and her relationship with her parents and her best friend (Dermot Mulroney). I saw this early 90s comedy drama in the mid 90s but haven't seen it for donkeys years, not least because you can't even get it on DVD. It seems rather unfair that it's so obscure, as it's a funny and touching piece with a good cast that also includes Hector Elizondo and Ione Skye, and is an all round very enjoyable film. And Martha was very cute.

Default Weekend round up.

Shock (1977)

A film i'd not seen in years and found unremarkable during that initial viewing. However seeing the region one dvd on Music Magpie for a couple of quid made me decide to get it for completion stakes.

On second viewing i have to say i was pleasantly surprised. Although quite slow i didn't find it boring this time around. The story of possession is now well worn but it seemed effective here and although it's definitely a lesser Bava film there were one or two nice flashes of flare and one or two shocks thrown in. The film is held together by a great, i'd say career best performance from Daria Nicolodi. David Colin Jr as Nicolodi's possessed son is as terrible as kids go in Italian horror, looking more like E.T. than a child half the time, so it's fortunate that Daria makes the whole thing believable.

Evolution (2015)

Weird and wonderful French art house horror film set on an island populated entirely by young boys and their mothers (maybe).

Evolution is a tough film to describe so i'll just throw a few words out and leave it at that - Disturbing, fetus, Lovecraft, hospitalised, surgery, creepy, beautifully dark, starfish, haunting, dread, squid-like-suckers.

Evolution is a provocative and unique slice of film making that some may find quite disturbing.

In Your Hands (2010)

Kristin Scott Thomas challenges herself in this edgy French art house film. She's a compelling presence and not particularly likable for the duration in this tale of abduction and reconciliation. She's glacially reserved (not too difficult for her i admit) to begin with but following her abduction she becomes a more involving and sympathetic character and gradually more vulnerable as this short (79 minutes) goes along.

The film takes the notion of Stockholm syndrome and then goes that little bit further in it's surprising finale. Both Scott Thomas and Pio Marmai as her kidnapper are both captivating in this deliberately paced movie.

In Your Hands is a film i certainly recommend, perhaps not if you want all out action though.

Enjoyable with some good creepy scenes but just like the mini series/ book , the adult part doesn't quite match the intensity of the kids story. Film could of easily been 20/30 minutes shorter. It's also let down at times by some poor CGI. Bill SkarsgÄrd is still menacing as Pennywise and gives a creepy performance once again. Still worth a watch . watch out for a cameo from King as a store owner. 8.2/10

Now watching The Running Man.

It (2017)
A group of kids band together to defeat an evil clown.
Watched this tonight cos I'm seeing chapter 2 tomorrow and in all fairness it's still a great horror. Despite some obvious jump scare moments and segments that could've been done better it still works

Jamaica Inn 1939.

A woman staying at Jamaica Inn uncovers a gang who purposely arrange shipwrecks for looting and profit.

This may not be Hitchcock's masterpiece film it is enjoyable only for Charles Laughton as the bubbly Sir Humphry and Maureen O' Hara as the stranger to the parts of Cornwall. The set up is like that of a horror movie with the shady Inn, the waves crashing and the storms then becomes a crime movie with some laughs and over the top acting. There is some suspense moments with the characters deceit and treachery is acted out and some good added twists.

A teenager's quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the early 1990s results in a very violent outcome.
In the words of Varg Vierkens "Did I like the movie? Let's find out.."

When I first start to listen to metal (long time ago with a band called Finntroll) was before the high speed internet & etc - I always remember someone tell me the story about Varg, the guy that killed another guy, and in court just smiled when was sentenced for 22years in prison.

Fast forward now days we can find information about everything with two clicks, so what is my surprise when this movie came out and is a piece of sh**. I know they probably changed a couple of things for the entertaining proposes, but this is a movie about black metal bands, the atmosphere of the movie most of the time looks like a party, there is no darkness in the characters, they guy that portraits Varg is a joke, they even try to put comical moments in the movie "does anyone want some tea?" - the only good part of the movie is when Dead shoot himself.

The movie drags for two hours. What a disappointment, I was expecting to be a bad, but this is worst than bad, this is just a piece of sh**. I never thought to say this but Varg you were right.
