That's what it said in my e-mail notification! John Ford is a great choice, but I'd probably go with Alfred Hitchcock or Orson Welles.

Executive Koala Theme Song - YouTube

kurosawa wishes he could direct something this great!!!

Executive Koala (2005) HD - YouTube

Also watched LITTLE ODESSA. A crime/family drama with Tim roth who comes back to kill a few men and decides to reconnect with his estranged family, especially his younger brother played by edward furlong. It's a very russian film with a very russian outlook on life (if you have ever read any dostoyevsky you will get it) and a great little movie if somewhat grim.

So executive koala was a great antidote!

To be fair, although predictable, he's up there with Cronenberg, Kubrick, Mayazaki, Brass, Argento and Roeg.

Argento. Really?

He may have had a rosy spell in the seventies to mid eighties, but he hasn't made a really good film in nigh on thirty years. :(

It's the quality of those films in that all to brief spell that truely raises his states for me.

I think he's made some great films but he's not really a great director.

Evil Dead (2013) - Not even worth a small review. I didn't hate it but I think the worst feeling when leaving a cinema is indifference, for me at least. I ask myself and anyone who will listen to me, why must all modern horror films cast pretty, model-like actors who are so distant that you can't relate to any of them? Some nice, gory moments though.:tongue1:

A director is the sum of his work, and Argento's great far out way his lackluster entries.

fuzzymctiger 8th April 2013 07:15 AM

For me it's either Kubrick or David Fincher.

They have maybe one dud and one or two average films each, but the rest is absolutely superb!

That counts against him, as does the fact his best films aren't as good as the best films made by directors like Scorsese, Hitchcock, Ozu, Kubrick, Truffaut, Godard, Ford, Hawks etc.

Two directors I can't stand... Kubrick shot two or three great films, though (and no, Full Metal Jacket is not one of them!).

Now that's debatable again! For my own part, Scorsese hasn't shot a single film that I'd call "outstanding", whilst Argento has at least three flicks deserving this tag: The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, and - most of all - Inferno are brilliant.

Which of Kubrick's films is a dud? I've seen all of them except Fear and Desire, Paths of Glory, and Barry Lyndon, and I'd say all of the ones I've seen are at the very least great.

What do you think of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Casino or The Departed?

I haven't seen them all, but there's always one film that someone doesn't agree with of his, and well David Fincher did Alien 3 :pound:

From what I've seen of Kubrick, his stuff is great.

I like the reduced palette used on this film. It adds greatly to the post apocalyptic feel of it and reminds me of all the happy hours playing Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas:nod:

I'm going to be honest, I watched Taxi Driver the other day for the first time, and it must have just gone over me. I found interesting at times, frustrating at others, but the ending was so good it nearly made me dramatically change my opinion on the whole movie!

I have Casino around, so I should watch that soon too.

Yeah, I'd agree about the movie actually seeming better because of the feel of Fallout 3. Which I guess speaks louder for the game than the movie, but damn it if that ain't a great game.

I put a silly amount of hours into Fallout 3, fantastic game. Whenever I hear music from the 50's and 40's, Fallout seems to instantly spring to mind.

Oh dear, Nos, you always have to probe me...

I admit it: I haven't seen a single Scorsese film from the beginning to the end. Some parts on YouTube, a few trailers, a synopsis here and there - that's it. I never felt the urge to watch any of his films.

You've got me there, Nos. I feel slightly ashamed now, but I thought it would be better to come out with the truth as early as possible.  :o

Sorry but I've just watched this absurd animation by Terry Gilliam for the first time in... well...is it really?...well I never...since The Life of Brian first came out in British cinemas

Taken (2008). Was this a kind of dreeeeam?

NO. Lyam Nieeson is paranoid about Europe (funny considering this is where he actually comes from), so warns his rather childish 17 year old daughter from Lost that it would be a BAD THING if she went there.

Guess what happens??

Easily the most fascist film I've seen since The Siege. The Family Guy spoof was spot on.
Aaaaaaand there is a sequel, I believe?? How thick is this girl?? More to the point, how thick does Hollywood think we are???:mmph::censored::bored:

Holly Valance still cute though.;);)

Demoncrat 8th April 2013 11:20 AM

Ahem. SPOILER CONTAINED WITHIN

American Mary (2012).

Haven't enjoyed a film as much in ages. Great performances all round imo. the only sour note was, much like Ms 45, patriarchal hegemony reasserts itself at the end.:(:mmph:

Well, you have some watching to do! Call it a film education if you want, but I consider Raging Ball to be the best film of the 1980s and loads of people prefer Goodfellas to The Godfather. Taxi Driver is a brilliant film about a psychopath and so is The King of Comedy.

I'm not sure what would be the best order in which to watch them, so try chronological, starting with Mean Streets.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 8th April 2013 01:01 PM

Forget Casino, The Departed, Goodfellas, The King of Comedy, and Raging Bull: watch After Hours instead! :woot:

Rik 8th April 2013 01:07 PM

Scorsese is my favourite non-horror director, so many classic films under his belt, Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull being my favourites.

Anyway, just watched Zombie Lake for the first time. WTF!
Gonna have to watch it again because I was distracted by the news breaking about that vile horrible woman who made the 80's horrible dying.
I will say though that I did enjoy it, shite as it really is

I've had a slight inkling of curiosity about this film despite it's veneer of 'likely awful modern British lads film'. XD Probably because I want to see how potentially grotesque the romance between Ray Winstone and Hayley Atwell is. :pound:

As a fan of the TV series I was inclined to give this a chance despite it having negligible connections to the mother ship. The romance is awful and forced and contrived amongst other things, and save for a few moments of enlightened police brutality that merely made me wish for a Marshal Law movie, the rest of the film has nothing to offer.

Invid Ninja 8th April 2013 02:50 PM

Soldier Blue (1970) - Revisionist western that I've only just viewed since being one of those many 'you must never watch this' films my parents would tell me about as a child. :tongue1: While certainly not for all tastes what with it's Vietnam allegory narrative as well as varying tone and narrative style, the film is held together well with both stark visuals and a standout performance from lead Candice Bergen. The oft-mentioned finale still packs a visceral punch with gore that would have likely been genuinely unbelievable to unsuspecting viewers upon release. An oddity, but a potent one.

Do not watch The Sweeney as an update of 'The Sweeney' TV Show, Winston and Plan B are not Reagan and Carter, if you watch it more as a live action version of the PS2 game The Getaway it's an enjoyable enough british action film, even if the final car chase is utter pants. What i would recommend for a British cops V Robbers flick is Erhan Creevy's Wonderful Welcome To The Punch, brilliant peformances from both Mark Strong and James McAvoy and some very well choreographed action scenes, a far better film.

I saw it at the cinema and thought it didn't work as a crime thriller as the characters were unbelievable, their methods outdated and 'base utterly ridiculous.

I completely agree. It was no classic, but it's really well plotted and, as you say, has excellent performances and action sequences.

Just watched

VAMPIRES NIGHT ORGY.

A fantastic little spanish horror where a bunch of people contracted to work at a country house end up stranded in a remote spanish village when the bus driver dies. The town is infested with vampires who begin killing off the group one by one. The Code red print is damaged but looks decent and VNO is an entertaining slice of euro horror.
