Don't post in this thread anymore because I'm rubbish at reviews. However felt the need to say I watched the BFI flipside disc of Nightbirds/The Body Beneath. Loved them both, my first views of the world of Andy Milligan. Had a looksy for any more releases of his films but there doesn't seem to be many? I know a lot of his movies are lost, which is shame. Really enjoyable. Body beneath is wonderful 'trash'. |

1 Attachment(s) The Shrine (2010) A group of American journalists go to a village in Poland to search for a backpacker who has mysteriously gone missing. Upon arrival they find a place steeped in stories of strange cults and human sacrifice. I really enjoyed this film. One of the best i've seen from the last few years. The film is undeniably derivative making me think of The Wicker Man and Hostel Part 2 among others with echoes of Bava's Mask of Satan thrown in. After a slowish start which enables us to get to know the four journalists the pace picks up with the discovery of a strange mist on the outskirts of the village, and within it a grotesque statue. These scenes are beautifully done and an eerie atmosphere at once bleeds from the screen. The Shrine is classified 18 which had me mystified throughout until we arrived at the climax when all hell breaks loose and the bloody sfx come into their own. The creature design is thankfully all prosthetic and the devillish dudes look really effective. Highly recommended. |
Sounds a little Lovecraftian almost. Might have to give this a look. |
It sounds like another of those 'Americans go to Europe and bad things happen' movies, like Taken and Hostel! |
Dr Jekyll vs the werewolf. Second on the code red double bill is one of the better Naschy waldamar daninsky werewolf films. Here a young couple visiting transylvania get mugged by local thugs and daminsky wades in to save them. Unfortuntaley the girls new hubbie dies, but thats ok bacause she quickly falls for ol' daninsky himself like most women in these films! Things start to get tense thanks to a pitchfork weilding mob so waldemar and the new missus head to london where they enlist the help of Henry Jekyll in a bid to cure waldemar of the curse. Things dont go according to plan and soon theres a hyde'd up daninsky terrorising 70's soho! Great fun, theres some print damage but the films a hell of a lot of good fun with some fairly nasty death scenes and a bit of kinky sadism thrown in as well. |

This evening i watched the Robert Zemeckis Sci-fi drama CONTACT, based on the Carl Sagen novel of the same name. A thoroughly engrossing intelligent science fiction drama with a great central performance from Jodie Foster. Loses some credibility towards the end but for a film that's 2 1/2 hours long and is overly scientific it's still gripping entertainment. I love how she's a firm believer in science over faith and by the end she's discovered the meaning of faith as she's gone on the journey. Wonderful special FX too. I hadn't seen it in a while and really enjoyed it. |
Despite being a lover of the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" I decided to give the remake a chance. I was pleasantly surprised. Keanu Reeves is at his wooden best and that's fine, it's what the part asks for. He makes Michael Rennie look like he overacted in the great 1951 version. I liked it and may one day watch them both to do a more critical comparison. |

1 Attachment(s) yesterdays viewings Wolf creek really couldn't get in too this, even though lots of people seem to like it, just found it a little dull and had no sympathy for any of the characters Death wish years since I seen this, a fantastic performance from Charles bronson, not as gritty as a remember but the rape/ murder still shocks even to this day, might pick up the other films. Scanners what can I say that's not already be said about this fantastic film, a true classic and the picture quality on the blu is excellent |

Lovefilm dispatched a DVD of The Shrine to me today, so I'll hopefully be able to let you know what I thought about it tomorrow or Thursday. |
Knightriders. After Night of the Living Dead I think this is probably Romeros best film. |
I watched THE FURY on Blu Ray last night, and my did it look good! Hadn't watched it for years.A real treat to return to it. That final scene taught Scanners a thing or two eh?;) |

As I've mentioned before, I have mainly been watching TV recently but I should really make the most of my time off and watch some of my scary movies, especially as Mum says I can leave the landing light on! Anyway, I delved into a classic, 12 Angry Men (1957), woot, 6% cleared from my Sky box! 12 Angry Men was one of those films I had always planned on getting around to watch but never made the effort to seek it out. Fortunately it was on MGM HD recently. An amazing, compelling film from start to finish with a stellar cast. I'm ashamed to say I was reluctant to see it as I didn't think a film about a jury deciding whether a kid was innocent or guilty would be as great as it is, such a simple premise but perfectly executed (pun intended) but with me just because something is a classic it doesn't mean I will like it. |
Casino - Sweet Jesus that's longest film I've ever watched in one sitting. And boy was it great. Fantastic performances, superb soundtrack, and, like Zero Dark Thirty, as long as it is, it's still extremely engrossing, as there is a lot of information to take in, especially in the first half an hour when they set up the whole story and characters. Sharon Stone does a good job of playing a complete nutjob. I'm not normally one to complain about violence, but Jesus it was pretty brutal at points, especially at the end. Having only seen Hugo and Shutter Island prior to my recent viewing, Taxi Driver was my first Scorsese classic, and I was a tad dissapointed. But this did not dissapoint and I look forward to watching his other classic works. All round 180 minutes well spent. Highly reccomended to those who haven't seen it.:pop2: |
I haven't watched anything for days and days been to busy with the move - I did watch Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom last week though, Raiders was ace but I found Temple a bit too corny - which is funny, because for years I thought I liked Temple more out of the two  Saying that though, the second half, which is NOTHING like the first hour of the film is really good. |
