Aliens (1986)

I know this goes against all public opinion but i'm really not a fan of James Cameron's Aliens.

On the plus side it's a tremendous looking film with the alien planet and all the space craft and vehicles on display looking ultra realistic so from a technical aspect it's superb but as a piece of entertainment, well that's where it falls down with me.

Sigourney Weaver, returning as Ripley from Ridley Scott's far superior Alien, remains a force to be reckoned with but the seemingly legendary Colonial Marines (Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton aside) are instantly forgettable. It's testament to John McTiernan's soon to be inextricably linked to this franchise Predator (1987) that he could make a team of army grunts fully rounded and interesting characters in one brief helicopter ride that Cameron couldn't manage in a mind numbing hour and a half of Colonial Marine chatter.

What irks more than anything is that this is supposedly an action film, yet most of the action we don't actually get to see. One long scene where the alien Xenomorphs are being mown down by automatic machine guns we don't see at all and this like so much of the so called action takes place as the viewer watches others watching the action.

The Xenomorphs themselves are utterly pointless having at most 20 seconds screen time throughout the first two hours, admittedly the final half hour features the alien queen extensively but the classic alien creature is sadly mostly absent from proceedings.

I've always found this film disappointing and last night's viewing on blu-ray was no better. Sorry but this is the worst of the first four Alien films.

I myself like you was disappointed about the sentry gun scene was hoping you would see the Aliens getting gunned down but only shows the guns firing where as in the theatrical cut they are only mentioned.

Interesting.

I don't think i've ever bothered to watch the theatrical cut. Maybe i should given that it's shorter.

There is a scene deleted from both versions Ripley finds Burke cocooned while searching for Newt and she hands him a grenade, totally surprised that wasn't added to the directors cut

Color Me Blood Red. 1965.

A eccentric artist kills young women and uses their blood for paint on his pieces of work.

From Hershell Gordon Lewis comes this daft horror thriller with a young man shouting Holly Bananas at finding a young woman buried underneath sand. The acting is really terrible considering it is the 60s and plot of it is daft yet I still found entertaining even with a shoe string budget, if you like quirky low grade movies then check this one out.

Something Weird. 1967

A man who was electrocuted and survived makes a deal with a hideous witch to restore his face which he develops psychic powers and all she wants is to be loved.

Another Gordon Lewis film, he seems to have a creative mind on how the film should be and go in a certain direction, for this it seemed to go up and down and some scenes drag on. Had to laugh at the witch with her wicked witch of the west voice and grey ish face make up and gapped teeth. The acting was never great but you get what you can afford, personally I stuck it out to see how it went and disappointed as the ending seemed to be rushed a bit.

The Pink Panther Strikes Back. Former Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), driven insane by the spectacular incompetence of Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) escapes from a mental asylum and begins creating a network of criminals while kidnapping a scientist to make him a superweapon with which he can hold the world to ransom, primarily for one purpose - get Clouseau. The fourth film in the long-running series is the silliest and most OTT, but that's why it's funny - basically being a Bond parody with Clouseau as a decidely unlikely Bond stand-in. Funniest bit is the world's deadliest assassins converging on Oktoberfest to kill Clouseau, only to accidentally knock off each other while he strolls through it all, oblivious. Silly fun.
