The Slayer was the first VIPCO sell-thru tape i ever bought so i've always had a soft spot for this often clumsy film.

The main problem for director JS Cardone, best known as the screenwriter for remakes of Prom Night and The Stepfather, is the lack of characters. With only four central protagonists to work with the killings have to be rather spaced out during the film's 90 minute running time, and there aren't really enough bloody deaths to sustain it, so we are left with many a sequence being far too talky and others of bland exposition "It's from my dreams".

Having been negative so far the film just about gets by without becoming boring. It's beach front location is interesting and well utilized and Cardone gives proceedings an almost Gothic like atmosphere. The creature itself is a splendid creation - a gnarly skeletal figure, and the gore effects well realized.

I realise what i'm about to say leaves me open to a lot of ridicule but i prefer the old VIPCO dvd release of The Slayer to Arrow's sparkling 4K print.

In all truth it's not a very good film and pales in comparison to many slashers of the time. The old VIPCO release wasn't bad in the picture quality stakes, in fact it was for the most part quite sharp especially when upscaled but at the same time it was also quite badly marked with a light sheen on it's right hand side during the darkly lit scenes. However this damage also gave the film a kind of mystical atmosphere which suited the film's dream like premise, giving an impression of peering into a grotesque netherworld, an impression that the newly restored print totally loses. Arrow's release is polished and slick looking (Incidentally two words never usually associated with director JS Cardone) with much of the weirdness lost, leaving us with a distinctly average and rather talky slasher film which takes an eternity to get going and doesn't really have enough murder set pieces to sustain it's ninety minute run time.
I agree in some films being too clean and too polished can sometimes take away the grimness and effectiveness of the films.

Invaders Of The Lost Gold (1982, Alan Birkinshaw)

Wheeeeeeeeeee! I finally found another film by AB

Ahem.
Jungle caper with Stuart Whitman, Glynnis Barber, Edward Purdom, Woody Strode, Harold Sakata aaaaaaaaaaaand Laura Gemser. Beat that

As cliched as they come, this perfunctory tale of mismatched treasure seekers is what it is really. The locals aren't friendly and the atmos within this group isn't cordial on the whole. But it ends with a kiss (AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW) so it was worth the journey ??? Hmm.

CNTRL+ALT+TRICK/TREAT (2020, Harvard John)

The other film made during the initial lockdown isn't as effective as Host imho. A group of friends are throwing a birthday party on that there Zoom don't you know. How the young live . Could not imagine watching this on a big screen, as a larger cast than either Host or Unfriended means there's more to keep an eye out for scare wise, which led me to rewinding it in parts ahem.
Decent enough set up, just a poor conclusion left me underwhelmed. Shrug.

The Spooky Bunch (1980, Ann Hui)

A theatre troupe find more than bad reviews when they trundle into town. To be fair, this was somewhat more comedic in nature, though the scares were reasonably effective as a whole. An odd one this, 88 need to stick this one out, as the print I perused wasn't that watchable.

A young woman is attacked and awakens in the middle of nowhere , she soon runs into some other young women whom are being attacked by psychopaths , it's soon becomes apparent she is part of some twisted game and each of the girls has one of the psychopaths as protector. Enjoyable with some great gore, the psycho killers are rip off of Jason, Leather Face and Michael Myers with there appearances . Another pleasant surprise.

Now watching.

Porno. 2019.

A group of theatre employees find a mysterious film that unleashes a dark malevolent spirit.

This was a hit and miss dark comedy horror, aside from the title the employees thought they were going to be watching a sex education film but instead unleash a evil beautiful spirit that spends her time naked or showing off her boobs. There is guys being pervs setting up a camera in a woman's cubicle toilet but there is some blood shown and home made first aid involving a guys junk and a piece of string, the acting may not be great but it's a laugh.

A enjoyable and gripping Korean possession film, a young priest loses his faith after a botched exorcism, but when the same demon starts possession his family he has too return home and confront his family and the demon once again. Well worth a watch a lot better than most western style film tackling this subject.

Started watching this but switched off after about 40 minutes, a film that proves that good gore effects don't make a film, it was let down by poor acting, direction and being very unfunny to the point it was cringeworthy.

So watching this instead.

JeruZalem. 2015.

Two American girls take a trip to Tel Aviv and are sidetracked to go to Jerusalem and find themselves in a biblical nightmare with demons.

This had a good premise and build up from the opening of the story about religion and finding a door/gateway to hell that has opened up in the heart of the religious part of the world. This is one of those found footage movies, that is not filmed by a hand held cam but by Smart Glasses which is a decent thing. Only downside to this we see the small demons and only see a glimpse of the bigger demon roaming about.

See No Evil. A young woman, recently rendered permanently blind in an accident, goes to live with her aunt and uncle and their daughter while she readjusts. After spending the day with her boyfriend, who is still committed to her in spite of her own fears of being a burden to him, she returns home... unaware that the whole family has been murdered and the killer is still on the premises. Mia Farrow stars in this early 70s thriller that manages to be entertaining throughout while never quite hitting full throttle.

Shaky cam is the best way to put it but decent effort for a movie set about religion.
