The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) Hammers superior version of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes classic stars Peter Cushing in a superb portrayal of the Baker Street detective, Andre Morell is his assistant Doctor Watson, and Christopher Lee who despite his prominent roles in Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein taking third billing as Baskerville as he wasn't seen as leading man status by Hammer just yet. More effective than the earlier film versions of the classic novel and it grips your interest from the get- go. Hammer's location work is impeccable, the swampy marshland is frightening in itself even before the spectre of the titular dog rears its terrifying head. Hammer give the whole area an atmosphere of sinister malevolence, especially when you take into account the tales of an escaped murderer on the loose. Although the story in itself is familliar, a family living under a dreaded curse, Hammer do add new elements whilst Terence Fisher once again proves himself the best of Hammer's in house directors as he firmly holds the viewers attention throughout. My only reservation with the film is the fact that Holmes goes missing for a great swathe of the running time, though this is a fault of Conan Doyle's story rather than the script itself. |
